Where's the prank?

I mean, he was being a bit heavy handed with it, but still... where's the prank? It's not like he was saying stuff that wasn't true.

Yeah, that was dumb.  Oh man, he pretended to be the professor and made people put their laptops away!  Those laptops don't just come right back on, ya know?  All those punked students will have to hit the power button!  THEY GOT PRANKED, HARD!

Prank??? Yuk Yuk Yuk....

If it doesn't involve chemicals, it's not a chemistry prank.

^^^ This.
Everything he said was correct, except maybe the 55% failure rate for that class. But the med school washout? Definitely.

My Chem and Bio 101 professors did the exact same thing,

This!

And WTF?  Are students really that loud these days?

Was it just a bad microphone?  Because I don't remember any of my classes in college being that loud.

A better prank would be to have Bryan Cranston come in and start teaching class.

2013-09-09 03:04:53 PM
A better one would be to start putting some alchemy stuff on the board, some circles, some strange formulas and boom!  Here is how we transmute lead into gold!

About the only funny part was, "WHO THE HELL ARE YOU!?"  Actually got the instructor pretty good... other than that?

2013-09-09 04:56:43 PM
Holy moly you people take yourselves way too seriously. It was a prank. He pretended to be the professor, yet he isn't the professor. He could've done a number of things with it, but he did what he did. Just enjoy the harmless fun in this world.

Yeah. Should've introduced himself, said it was intro to chemistry but that they should have a good grounding from their high school classes, and then launched immediately into some complex problems.

I'm teaching intro to chemistry this semester and my first lecture is this week.  Don't tempt me.

I've done that from the other side.  I look 5-10 years younger than my actual age.  One semester when I was teaching lab, I walked in with the students and sat down among them on the first day.  When class began, I stood up and started my spiel.  Lame, perhaps, but it was spur of the moment.

Do eeet!

You can even explain it as a teaching moment, if anyone complains - you're showing problems that will be on the final, that they'll be able to do at the end of the semester, to show them how much they're able to achieve if they try hard.

That used to be the prank of choice for Med students at my uni. One final year student would intercept the lecturer on his way to the first class of the year to delay him, while another would walk into the theatre, make a quick introduction "Hi I'm Professor X, medicine is an extremely hard course so pay attention, then launch into senior level theory as fast as he could write on the board so everyone would be scrambling to write it down. Eventually, the real guy shows up......

What was there to enjoy. He didn't really do anything. He just... pretended to be a professor and didn't do anything differently then pretty much any professor would have done. If he had made them uncomfortable or did something wacky it would have been a prank. But he just introduced himself, told them not to use laptops or cellphones in class and then told them realistic stats about Med school washout rates.

Ooooooh, how hilarious and/or edgy!

Lamest prank ever.

I had a teacher that didn't quite do that. He launched in to 10 minutes of Calc II on the first day then said "...Oops, well, keep that in mind for next semester... Now let's do Calc I..."

Oh yeah I remember that in grad school physics.  Except the prank NEVER STOPPED AND IT WAS THE REAL GUY.

mongbiohazard: and then told them realistic stats about Med school washout rates.

Just a nitpick: he was talking pre-med washout rates, which are indeed huge.  Med school is tiny, like 5-8% total from enrollment to graduation.  Make of that what you will.

I taught an entire nursing class the entire human skeletal structure in 5 minutes before the prof showed up once back in the 80s.
It's pretty easy if you know the teaching tricks.

These kids generally don't have a rigourous background from high school, and they're in my class because they want to be.  I don't want to crush that fragile optimism on the first day.

/that's what the second day is for

That's where the prank should have taken off.  "Ok, can those of you in the front row stand up?  This is the proportion of this class who will kill themselves before the age of 30.  Thanks.  Now rows two through four?  This is the how much of this class who will not graduate in four years.  And now, can I have any girls wearing halter tops or whose names end in 'i' stand up?  These are who will have an unexpected pregnancy by the end of freshman year.  No, not that number, those girls."
