Saw something, said something. Always hated the big-brother feel of those signs, but good for them. Sounds like they helped avert a tragedy. And avoided being caught in the inevitable crossfire!

Last week we had a story where some teabagger attention whore was questioned by the cops for showing up with a gun at one of those 'Impeach Obama' overpass sign waving things. Somebody saw a guy with a gun on a freeway overpass and called the cops. And folks here lost their minds about the assault on the 2nd Amendment. Now this guy basically does the same thing and he's a hero.

In other news, Dearborn cops actually subdued a guy instead of ventilating him.

Better safe than sorry?  Bearing arms is a right, yes, but that doesn't mean you can go around causing ruckus while doing so.  There are right and wrong ways of exercising that right, check with your local law enforcement for specific guidelines.

This guy in the article didn't see someone just carrying a weapon, like a deer rifle in a pickup's gun rack or a holstered pistol in a public space, he saw suspicious behavior, and suspicious behavior involving a gun.  The suspect was also sneaking into a police station's grounds.  There are some pretty clear differences between the situation you describe, and the one in the article.  Additionally, police must respond to 911 calls - if anyone had called the Tea Party (?) fellow on the overpass in, well, the police had to respond.  What they did afterwards, well, that's up to an officer's judgment, and can be cleared up later if need be.  Police response isn't uniform even in one jurisdiction, let alone across a county, parish, state, or the nation.  Basically - don't let it get to you.

The guy in the article may not quality as a hero by phoning in the suspicious behavior.  I think "hero" is a little strong for an act if civic responsibility.  "Good citizen," is apt.  I think he is going above and beyond "good parent," though, for taking his non-verbal, autistic son trainspotting, and then capably handling a dodgy situation when it was presented.

Summary - great parent in the right place at the right time.

I think they told the guy to go someplace else because he was slowing down traffic and he did.

There was another one where the guy figured what the cops did was wrong.

FECK! now with the working link.

He didn't get shot or arrested so I think he should just STFU. I'm a big supporter of the 2nd amendment, and I was a cop. Cops see lunatics with guns on a regular basis, they just need a little cooperation and everybody goes their merry way. This guy was just being a putz.

I agree, and how he was holding the gun makes a difference.  For example how he was holding it in this photo should be considered brandishing, which is illegal:

Meh, he wasn't pointing it anyone and his finger is not on the trigger, but geez man, if you want to make a point - and not be a dick to the cops, carry it on a sling over your shoulder with the action visibly open.

Some people never learn that just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it.

/The impeach Obama thing is a little stupid too. Just wait, it will take that long to spin up the whole impeachment thing and frankly we've got more important problems. I'm no big fan of President Obama but -- a little perspective, geez.

Guy crawling under the fence of a police station with or without a gun is a little different than guy standing on an overpass with a gun.

Nice try though.

Was just at a comedy show and one of the guys was saying he likes taking Amtrak. "Because they have a very relaxed attitude about guns. As long as you're not waving it around in the cafe car, it's cool." Then he sang a jingle like, "Amtrak...discretion is great!"

Yeah, a guy with the intention of shooting at traffic would never think to be on an overpass with a gun.

I don't think anyone in the thread so far has said that it was a bad idea for someone to phone the police about a man on an overpass with a gun.  I understand, I think, that you were pointing out the discrepancy in public response and reporting concerning both the report and the handling of the armed individuals involved in each story.  It did come across to me as though you had an unfavorable opinion in there somewhere, or that perhaps you were having trouble understanding the variance in the public reaction to each story.  I don't think that either is actually true, but initially, that's how it read.  I can see how a sarcastic response could arise from the kind of murky post, but hey, people get touchy over guns and shiat.

I'm glad nobody was hurt in either case, except for people that got butthurt over a perceived violation of someone else's rights.  I'm not glad they're upset - they just go on and on sometimes!

the public has much more reason to fear a guy on an overpass with a gun then they do a guy crawling under the fence of a police station. thanks for pointing that out.

I think that its might be the sign that gives it away - standing on an over pass with a gun AND a sign? Likely a political statement by a nutbar. Sneaking into/around a police station with a rifle? Mentally unhinged.

Rail nerds? Really, subby?

A man took his autistic son to see a train at the station because the boy is fascinated by them. Hardly compares to the rabid, mouth breathing, railfans who will drive 100 miles to the middle of a corn field to watch an empty freight train roll by and take pictures of the serial numbers of each train car while masturbating furiously.

Murder Demon 2251
After Action Report
Status: Failure

Murder Demon 22251 attached itself to Mortal Soul and instructed corporeal being to destroy itself in a standard public suicide. Murder Demon rode with Mortal Soul to the police station and had to listen to Barry freaking Manilow on the CD all the way there. Mortal Soul played "Mandy" both album and Live version. Also, Mortal Soul chose Taco Bell for his last meal. Murder Demon 22251 should get extra credit for just staying with Mortal Soul in the same vehicle.

At the chosen scene of his dispatch, Mortal Soul fought with Murder Demon twice before attempting to complete the pact and seal his death and descent in Hell. At the last moment, King JEBUS appeared, flipped Murder Demon 22251 the bird and told Murder Demon "You can't have this one, biatch!" (exact quote) Jebus then pointed to his crotch and told Murder Demon "to possess this, punkster"(again, exact quote). As is law, Murder Demon was forced to give up Mortal Soul and flee back to the realm of Hell. Though Murder Demon did stop off for a donut and coffee as is custom.

After Action Review:
Murder Demon should move faster. Make and of Accept less complex suicide pacts. Steer clear of Manilow and Taco Bell lovers.

Lady J,

No. That was my takeaway from subby's headline, which implied that a group of railfans thwarted a suicide by cop with some sort of electrical means. I actually read the article and saw it was a single guy and his autistic son who called the cops (twice) because he saw some guy screwing around by a police station, then go under the fence with a gun. Misleading headline is misleading.

Apparently though, i should be discussing gun porn or 2nd Ammendment rights like everyone else in this thread. I also need to Youtube some SD80MACs on a coal drag so i can get all hot and bothered. :)

I hope your answer is in there somewhere. It is a very painful website to watch loading:

http://www.firewall-darkcast.com/wiki/alternative-combat-rules-and-we a pon-stats

Anti-Materiel Rifle, Caseless [Price: High | Size: Very Large | Weight: Heavy] AP: -20 / DV: 2d10+25 / SS / Ammo: 7 / Range: 0-100\300\1500\2300 Summary: Anti-Material rifles are so named because they serve to eliminate lightly armored equipment on the battlefield. Contrary to popular belief it is not because such powerful weapons are banned from use against infantry. Targets commonly eliminated or disabled by anti-material rifles include advanced jets [on the ground], communications equipment, and light vehicles. In Eclipse Phase it is very likely this weapon would also have been used to eliminate autonomous robots and cyborgs, due to their greater capacity for armor over a typical human.

People who commit suicide by cop are cowards. "Wah I want to die, but I'm too chicken shiat to do it, so I'm going to shot at other people so the cops kill me, but I'm fine if other people die too."

I wonder how many senseless deaths could be avoided if we had suicide booths like Futurama.

I'm fairly certain I've never seen a single SD80MAC, let alone a pair of them. The only slug I see is in the IAIS intermodal yard, but not often, Council Bluffs isn't where I tend to hang out.

I've never seen a problem with Dearborn cops. To be fair, I'm white.

That said, I'm surprised they weren't more jumpy since that whole Dollar store murder thing (did anything ever come of that?  It's too early to hit google and remember those details).

Anyway, good on the kid.  The train that passed through Dearborn to Detroit or Ann Arbor is always delayed as f--k anyway; a shooting on the tracks would've made it oh so much worse.

I mean, priorities.

Suicide rates drop the less convenient it is (that is, people don't switch to other methods, as much as they switch to staying alive). So suicide booths would probably lead to excessive usage.

Unless they were by appointment only with a long cooling off period or something.

/relevant to gun control - apparently most firearm homicides are suicides, so a strong right to die favors widespread gun ownership

Not a cool story bro: A rail fan friend got killed by a 2 mph trail. He was climbing over the connection between the cars on a stopped train when it suddenly lurched forward. He lost his balance, passed out when he hit his head on the ground and then was run over by the very slow moving train. He'd been photographing trains for over thirty years and never had so  much as a close call before. It was like the Crocodile Hunter tempting death by dangerous creatures only to be killed  by something as mundane as a stingray.
