I used to feel that the Confederate flag was a symbol of treason and obviously racism and I still do but fark it. It's a flag. and it's a good early detection device to point out the redneck assholes so you don't have to talk to them before you have them figured out.

The CSA museum is in Richmond, the main street has statues of CSA on horse back. If you were not raised in the south you have no idea what this flag means. The race baiting people with no idea will make up their mind, praise Obama and go to their minimum wage job while asking their Mom to do their laundry.

In before the voluminous evidence in the secession documents and "The Cornerstone Speech" get cited.

/For some reason, people will still say, "Heritage, not hate!" even after evidence to the contrary is presented.

So has the Conferderate flag always been offensive or is this just something that has cropped over the last few years as people are having fewer and fewer things to get "offended" over?

I don't recall hearing as much butthurt about it a few years ago.

I don't think it's just the last few years - but yes. Flying a battle flag of the traitors who fought for their "right" to keep slaves is offensive.

2013-09-08 06:45:15 PM
Now now, it's not racist - this flag is all about a HERITAGE and STATE'S RIGHTS.

It just happens to be a heritage of racism, and the "state's rights" in question mostly concerned the right to own slaves. But I'm sure that's just a coincidence.

Born in raised in rural Middle Tennessee, in a town where one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War took place.

You're a complete, disingenuous retard if you ignore the racist connotations behind the reasons the civil war was fought.

I think it really came to the forefront at the end of the 80's early 90's.  Heck, until I actually associated the flag with what the southern states fought the Civil War for (in part at least) I simply thought the flag was just a pretty cool paint job on an orange car that liked to jump large gaps and outwit dumb law enforcement.

Virginia Flaggers plans to raise a 12-foot by 15-foot "stars and bars" flag

12'x15' seems like an odd aspect ratio, and doesn't match any of the flags you posted.  Will it just be a slightly out of square version of the battle flag of Northern Virginia?

I have no issues with the flag being used for historical or heritiage purposes but flying it year round to be seen from the highway. I can't say I'm keen on the idea.  a couple years back traveling down to florida there was a huge rebel flag flying and visable from the highway. Seeing no tourist attraction signs, I must admit it made me wonder why it was being flown.

When I was in Buenos Aires last year there were three different shops selling Confederate flags, including one with "The South Will Rise Again" on it. I'm wondering if they simply see it as part of the culture of the United States or if it was some sort of anti-USA message.

/Caterpillar, the heavy construction vehicle company, is a big shoe brand down there. Not work boots, casual shoes. It was odd to see but they're actually nice looking shoes.

The mistake that the North made was that they let up off the South only after a few years.  They should have kept the boot on the neck of the South for at least 40 years.  Enough to raise a couple of generations with the proper respect for their nation.

I'm so sick of this shiat that I'm ready to make a deal: If there is anyone who genuinely wants to celebrate "Southern Heritage" with no racist implications (however that might be possible), just fly the REAL Stars and Bars (pictured above by  shanrick).  Leave the Tennessee battle flag for the openly racists. Deal?

So much this. America needs to do to the Confederate flags what Germany has done to Nazi flags: have them banned from public display unless it's for educational or artistic purposes.

These rarely are.

I do find some of the angst over the flag a little overwrought. Back in the early '90s, Northern Va Community College's mobile history museum actually took down one of them from a display because of the sensitivity. That's a little nuts to me.

I think the flag pole is two fires over from the left, but to be sure just raze the town again to find a good place for flying the confeddi flag to welcome all those fellows with those curious bags made from heavy cloth.

I have no problem with the flag itself, other than the fact that it's a flag that was used by rebels and failed rebels at that.  That alone would have me perplexed why so many Southerners wrap themselves up in them.

What bothers me is what that flag has 'become' since 1865.  It's become a symbol of terrorism, to be honest.  Of fear and intimidation.  A reminder that says "We haven't forgotten our struggle to own you people as slaves.  And we take pride in that fight to keep you as property.  Keep that firmly in mind."

Sure we do - it's about slavery, sedition, and secession. Pretty much covers it.

That's the problem, though, right? Can't use it as a semaphore to rally the bigots any more, and increasingly, the use of such symbols as code has become mainstream enough to be recognizable. It's like an "88" tattoo - used to be cool among the bigots, but now that the straights can pick them out of a crowd and shun them like the scum-sucking assholes they are, well, can't have that anywhere where it shows, now, can we?

So, yes, we'll keep shaming the bigoted morons who keep waving the damned thing in public.
