Best. Elvi. Evar.

And so, they began to wander off into the desert. More followed, mindlessly trekking in their dust-caked blue suede shoes. Until they were caught in a trap, somewhere out beyond Red Rock, at the end of Lonely Street...

Really?  My sister was in Vegas for a friend's wedding, and they couldn't get an Elvis anywhere.  They went to a little chapel instead and wound up walking into a pilot for a reality show, which I guess is a more interesting story than an Elvis impersonator in the long run.

Today, James is the official Elvis for the downtown tourist strip.

He's actually pretty good as Fat Elvis.

Oh snap, I saw his "Elected" show about 9 years ago having no idea what he was (free tickets).  It was awesome.

Elvis is awesome. I went through a phase where I listened to suspicous minds every day. The bridge in that song is just incredible.

I sometimes think about Jesse Presley. If he had survived, I would bet that Elvis would still be alive. And we probably would never have heard about him.

Tragedy is the great motivator

Frankly. I never cared much for Elvis.  Now, a good Elvis impersonator, I'll jump all over that.

'The number of Elvies Presley impersonators has reached an all-time record high - there are now at least 85,000 Elvis's around the world, compared to only 170 in 1976 when he died. At this rate of growth, experts predict that by 2019 Elvis impersonators will make up a third of the world population.'

Elvis was the best of the best in a field overflowing with bright talents and a fountain of creative genius.  Oh wait, no- he was basically the only white singer at the time who simply ripped off black blues masters and fed it to bigots.

Today, Elvis would be an unknown Youtuber covering rap songs.

Every rock musician from that time ripped off something from black blues singers. Hell, the Rolling Stones have admitted that on multiple occasions. Seeing as how Elvis exposed a lot of people to that style of music, I'd say that probably helped those blues singers and that style get new fans. Would you have preferred those singers languish in obscurity rather than get new record sales because the white boy helped people find out about them?

I know, it sucks when other people get to find out about the music you like.

Besides, Elvis did far more than just Delta blues. Like many singers of that time, he also did country songs, gospel, and straight up crooning. "Are You Lonesome Tonight" is right up there with any torch song Sinatra or Dean Martin put out.

You may now resume your one-dimensional whining.

There's this GREAT late 70's psychedelic pop\rock album called "Heaven Was Blue" by Rick Saucedo. Kinda dark, hazy, a little beatles\pink floyd vibe, one of the songs is kinda shoegazer-esque.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4riqCMsBs4

Turns out this was a deviation from Rick's normal musical stylings :  he was one of the earliest elvis impersonators (he started when the real Elvis was still alive), and from what I hear one of the "better" ones, whatever that means!

Actually, this accusation goes back even further than rock 'n roll.  For example, back in the 1920s, a lot of white jazz musicians and crooners started out imitating black jazz musicians and singers.

Dollar craps... dammit!

Supply must have already adjusted to demand, because the last two times we were in Vegas, we saw only one single Elvis, total.  Just one of the random cosplayers on the Strip, begging for somebody to pay them for a picture.  He was nearly lost in a seas of Bulblebees, Master Chiefs, Spider Men, and kickline dancers.

Although, watching "Zach Galifianakis" share a smoke break with Wolverine was pretty funny.  Ended up looking like Wolvie beat the hell out of the guy, but they made amends and shared a smoke.

Best show in vegas right now: Frankie Moreno

I saw him play nearly ten years ago when he had first booked the lounge at the LVH.

If you're in vegas and want a great show, go to the Strat and lay down the money for Frankie.

In addition to my day job, I'm a working guitar player/vocalist in a few bands. One of the bands is a show band for an award winning Elvis impersonator. We mostly play area casinos. This guy has a powerful, natural voice and on a lot of the stuff, if you close your eyes, you'd think you were listening to Elvis.

Anyway, when I was first offered the job, I thought it would be cheesy (and it is) and I wouldn't dig it too much. But hey - it was money, so I took it. As it turns out, I've learned a few things about Elvis & his fans:

1) Some of those songs have a lot more going on than you'd think. As far as chord progressions and arrangements, they're more complex than you might imagine on a casual first listen.

2) Elvis paraphernalia is expensive. Those suits can cost 2 or 3 grand each, and that doesn't count the replica jewelry. The serious impersonators have some bucks invested.

3) Elvis (and impersonator) fans are some of the warmest, nicest people you can imagine. I've played all kinds of music in clubs and bars in front of all kinds of audiences for many years, and my favorite group to play for are the Elvis fans. You see a lot of the same faces at every gig. And though you're doing the same songs in mostly the same order night after night, these people genuinely love it every time. And they treat you like family. When we're on break, we sit at the tables with the fans and chat. I much prefer it to playing in front of a bunch of frequently violent drunks.

I actually enjoy doing the Elvis gigs. You don't have to learn a lot of new material, the audience is always awesome, I don't get my head blown off with volume, it's only a 2.5 hour show rather than the usual 4, and it's easy. So yeah... I rather dig it.   :-)

Came here to say this.  If you only see one Elvis impersonator in Las Vegas, make it Big Elvis!
/Although he's slimmed down from 900 pounds to 500, so he's getting to look more like Actual Elvis.
