I used to love The Pretenders and Chrissi Hynde, until they began supporting Rush Limbaugh.

For which she's appropriately compensated.

/I don't have to agree with someone's politics to take their money.

Of course, you're all assuming that Chrissie owns the rights to license her music, rather than her management/record label. She probably has no say in the matter whatsoever.

As I understand it the royalties Rush Limbaugh pays for My City Was Gone get redirected to PETA.

I seem to recall that Chrissie Hynde some years ago said that she doesn't want Rush using her song in his show.  It is quite difficult to believe that she supports his nutjob political pandering to the double digit IQs.

Her parents like(d) RL.  She allowed him (at that time) to use the song because of them.

per RL years ago

I can't find it on YouTube but the best Pretenders track is the version of When I Change My Life from the Pirate Radio compilation.
It makes the sad.

When I change my life
And all the scars have faded
I'll be someone you look up to
Not excused when your friends come around

And you'll want me
Always to be there
You'll be proud to say, "I'm with her"
When I change my life

I've heard (not by choice) Peter Gaberial's Shock the Monkey on his show once.  I don't know if he owns his music, (few do) but I'm sure a guy like that also doesn't support Rush

That's what I heard. He used the music for several years without paying royalties. When Hynde sued to stop him, he agreed to pay Royalties which she promptly donated to PETA. Hynde is a liberal and would never support Rush.

Anyone ever hear the Pretender's cover of the Ramones.

A bit slow, but kind of nice. Not one of the Ramones' best songs.. it's from their middle period, but still cool.

/original version is here.. the video spoofed live aid / we are the world

I read somewhere that the Pretenders' guitar sound inspired all those jangly guitars that you heard in lots of 80's and 90's bands. I'd like to think that was true.

Which is exactly why I dislike her, as well as anyone else who supports PETA.  There are plenty of legitimate charities she could have donated the money to that would have annoyed that bloated fart bag Limbaugh.

I have no idea what the source of this is, but this was posted on at least two blogs:

"Last month, Hynde finally got Limbaugh to pull the song but then did an about face on Aug. 18, telling him that he could use the song if he donated all the royalties to the animal right's organization PETA, after PETA campaign manager Dan Mathews told her Limbaugh had a soft-spot for animals. She fired off the following missive to PETA to let them know of the recent developments. "In light of Rush Limbaugh's vocal support of PETA's campaign against the Environmental Protection Agency's foolish plan to test some 3,000 chemicals on animals, I have decided to allow him to keep my song, 'My City Was Gone,' as his signature tune and to donate all proceeds from the deal to further PETA's efforts in that regard""

Chrissie Hynde was a spokesperson for PETA at the time.

Which suggests she did a hell of a lot of drugs in her active rocker years and burned out half her brain cells.  I categorize PETA supports in the same group as the Jenny McCarthy anti-vaxxors.

Hardly.  Most of Ohio is very, very Republican apart from the big cities (and even Cincinnati is predominantly Repub).

Ever heard the phrase "as Ohio goes, so goes the nation"?  It's been one of the most important bellweather states since 1900.
