(STLToday)   Sure, St. Louis' Gateway Arch is now considered a national icon, but it was only built because of voter fraud manipulated straight from City Hall   ( divider line

groppet: SomeAmerican: This part was interesting:

On Oct. 9, 1939, Dickmann swung a crowbar to begin demolishing 486 buildings. Construction on the flattened riverfront landscape didn't begin until 1959.

So the after the fraudulent vote to seize the property of the riverfront owners, their houses and businesses were demolished and then the lots left vacant for 20 years.  Talk about adding insult to injury.

WW2 explains 1941 through 1945, I wonder what the other 16 years were for?

"Planning" or lots of bribing

According to the Wikipedia article, by the time the land had all been condemned, rail-road tracks had been built which obscured the view of the river. It then took a couple of decades to design and negotiate the reroute of those tracks.

jpo2269: Fark you Subby, according to, there has never been a single incident of voter fraud in our nation's history..  I demand you retract this story!

And...this wasn't voter fraud either. This was election fraud. Stuffing the ballot box can only be done form inside the election management team.

Individual voters can not and have never thrown an election.

So...I agree, Fark you subby, learn the difference between election fraud and voter fraud.

MayoBoy: If you want to learn about a real crime, look into the wholesale destruction of what was Mill Creek Valley/Midtown (south of SLU)

At the time, nobody had any idea on how to do urban renewal. Everybody thought that the answer was to clear out all the urban land possible so that developers who were building in the suburbs would come build around the city center, instead. The people who were packed so tightly in 1 and 2 story tenements would instead be packed in vertical tenements like Pruitt-Igoe, leaving the rest of the land clear for stuff like parks and commercial development.

Obviously, this did not work. But post-war, St. Louis was already seeing the effects of white flight as everybody bought cars and moved to the suburbs, which only increased once the interstate system began construction. So, the city felt like it had to do something - too bad the only thing it did made the problems worse instead of better. But hey, at least there was plenty of cheap blighted real estate for Fr. Biondi to scoop up for SLU at next-to-nothing prices.

FNG: Say what you will, but those little eggs they put you in to get to the top make you feel like you're from Ork.

Not sure about Ork, but I wanted to hork. That's the scariest elevator I've ever ridden in, and I'm not normally prone to claustrophobia. All to enter a narrow slot of a room top, with cheap carpet and a few tiny windows overlooking the rattiest part of town.
