So never forgetting is another thing your mom has in common with elephants.

Did I miss the point in the article where they state they control for genetic differences in populations? Because I didn't see that.

It's a self-correcting problem!

/also, what is "alzheimer's risk"

Also, if anyone in this thread says "Alzheimer's is caused by antiperspirants and aluminum cookware", I'm going to flog you publicly should we ever wind up at the same Fark party.

Does anyone know someone who was a fishing/hunting/camping fanatic who developed Alzheimers?  I'm curious based on the assertions in the article.

Pretty sure i once heard it was caused by cheese whiz, or some chemical in fake cheese. Maybe that was cancer. They both get a new cause each month.

The only cause i've ever believed is not using your brain. Recall some study showing something as simple as doing a crossword each day can help stave it off.

Yes, because nobody on Fark could be faculty in a Genetics department. Unpossible.

I just read the paper. No genetics mention there either.

Sanitation is only one covariable in wealthy vs poor nations. I'm sure we could think of several others.

I've reviewed and rejected better papers than that one. I don't think it should have been accepted.

I've read that too-good sanitation causes asthma too. Yet I know someone who has had asthma all her life, and grew up on a farm.

It's going to get a lot worse.  I know a lot of people in their mid 30s that are practically germophobes.  I'm in the same generation and I think they're whacko.  I think previous generations had some notion of eliminating germs from everyday life but it's taken until my generation to really follow through on that.

Let me get my hand sanitizer before I take that paper from you.

Typical scientist elitism!  I bet you think you know more than we do just because you spent years studying and learning and doing research.  In fact, I bet you don't even OWN an armchair at all!

You should try reading the actual journal article, since their methodology does seem to indicate that they compared relatively genetically similar and diverse groups.  It would astonishing if there was a significant genetic difference between urban and rural people within the same region.

"Another meta-analysis found that age-standardized AD prevalence in Latin America, China, and India were all
lower than in Europe, and within those regions, lower in rural compared to urban settings [62]. In a meta-analysis of Asian countries, the wealthier ones had higher age standardized rates of AD prevalence than the poorer countries [63]"

Also see this:

Alzheimer's risk changes with environment
Previous studies have found that individuals from similar ethnic backgrounds living in low versus high sanitation environments exhibit low versus high risk of AD. African Americans in Indiana had higher age-specific mortality-adjusted incidence rates of AD than Yoruba in Nigeria [67], and while there is no indication that the sampled African Americans had any Yoruba or even Nigerian heritage, the results are at least consistent with our predictions for the HHAD. There is also evidence that immigrant populations exhibit AD rates intermediate between their home country and adopted country [63, 68-70]. Moving from a high-sanitation country to a low-sanitation country can decrease immigrants' AD risk [47] (e.g. Italy to Argentina [71] (but see [72]). Our results are consistent with the possibility that living in different countries confers different AD risk, stratified by sanitation (Figs 1 and 2).

No matter what you do, or how you live your life, unless you get killed young, alzheimers, cancer, or one of their buddies is going to get you.
(Well, some people just die of 'old', but that's usually no picnic either)
