Maybe this'll get out of hand and they'll all kill each other....

I have a crazy Tea Party brother-in-law. The default mantra always seems to be double-down and out-derp whatever preceded. If the Earth is only 6,000 years old. fark it, now it's only 4,000 years old. If everday citizens should be able to own machine guns, now it's flame-throwers. Etc.

SCF: McConnel lost Republicans the Senate by pushing moderates!

The rest of the country: BOTH of you lost the Republicans the Senate by nominating Republicans.

I remember one thread on the Politics tab where someone was seriously arguing that citizens should have the rights to own the components used to manufacture nuclear weapons.  The only way I could read that thread and keep my sanity was to think I was seeing one of the most epic trolls ever, but that's definitely teabagger rhetoric: it just gets crazier and crazier.

Stay tuned. And make sure your popcorn bowl is full.

There's nothing in the Second Amendment that makes an exception for nuclear weapons.

...let's ask Sen. O'Donnell...oops, I mean Sen. Angle.  How about Sen. Akin and Sen. Mourdock?...never mind.

And if you think about it, the only real gains they achieved was the 2010 congressional race. They picked up a bunch of seats, only to find that the people in those seats were incapable of basic governance.

I wouldn't write these gains off as short-term until the GOP starts losing governorships and state legislatures. Plus, if the GOP somehow manages to take the Senate and the White House in 2016, I'm sure they'd consider those two years worth it indeed.

Strengthened the center,
Given the center to the DEMS,
marginalized the GOP as the party of derp and awe

Can the country afford to have another GOP president yet?
Have we recovered from the last one yet?

Strangely enough, byt 2016 we might have, which would be perfect timing for the GOP to sweep into the whitehouse and fark things up again.

The Democrats seemed to have a similar, albeit not quite as spectacular, era of self-immolation in the 60's and early 70's. And it cost them quite badly, allowing the GOP time to redefine itself and shed the image of being the party of investment bankers in the Hamptons and Palm Beach.

I'll say one thing for the GOP: The Democratic party is interested in doing stuff. The Republicans are interested in winning elections.

I think you're probably right, but it's very difficult to not recognize the way their local efforts in redistricting, election board control, and judicial appointments have paid huge dividends. A lot of states with very purple electorates churn out blood-red House results.

A lot of state houses have gone GOP over the last decade (at least in my casual observation), I don't see it as a growth area for them, but I'd be reluctant to bet on huge reversals in the very short term anyway.

And the representatives from those blood red districts will destroy the party from within.  They're usually the ones screaming about purging the RINOs.  That's a great short-range goal, but it will hurt them in the long run.
