I think we need to get the Olympics to Riyadh or Abu Dhabi... The lulz would dwarf the ones we have for Russia.

Yeah but really, who gives a shiat about who can run around in circles or jump over shiat fastest?

It's a sporting event.  Who cares who can put a ball through a hoop best?  Who cares about 22 sweaty men running a ball up and down a field?  Who cares about a bunch of guys (and occasionally women) driving in a left-hand circle for hours?

Honestly, I'd like to see all sports go amateur, and the resulting free capital go toward education and libraries.  But I'm aware how far-fetched that is.

You may as well wish for the movie and music industries to go non-profit.  They are all forms of entertainment.

Looks like Madrid is out - first round was Tokyo, then Madrid & Istanbul tied; Madrid lost the tiebreaker.

Tokyo vs. Istanbul

This. For the Summer and Winter Olympics. Last year in London, I was obsessed with the rowing competition, for example. The only exception: the Little Pixie girls gymnastics, I can't hit the channel change button quick enough.

I voted for Centralia. They even have their own flame already, and there's lots of room to build stadiums that will be used for two weeks and then abandoned.

Can't say I'm really surprised they chose Tokyo.  Madrid has all the EU-related economic problems and probably couldn't really guarantee being able to pull it off.  Turkey's (and neighboring Syria's) political issues make Istanbul too risky.  And Tokyo gets the benefit of using their hosting as a means to show the world how Japan has recovered from the Tsunami.

And the Tokyo folks probably paid the largest bribe.

This. Though I don't expect to be as into February's Winter Games as I was into the London Games. The BS Russia has pulled in building for the Games plus the political BS hasn't gotten me excited.

Not surprised the Tokyo won either once I heard about the 1st vote result.

Also of note: tomorrow, they'll vote on which sport joins the Olympic program for 2020: wrestling, baseball/softball or squash.

Summer Olympics are boring...here are the results in a quick summary:
USA will win a medal in basketball, more than likely Gold;
USA and Jamaica will dominate the track events;
USA and Australia will dominate swimming;
USA and China will dominate gymnastics;
The poor East African nations will own the long distance running competitions;
Everything else is boring...

The Winter Games are much more entertaining because of extreme events like bobsled, skeleton, luge, and ski jumping. Those farkers are crazy. Also, as a huge hockey fan, the Olympic tournament is fun to watch.

Also, good, Tokyo should've won. Just had it in Spain in '92. (Winter Olympics don't count).

The Winter Games is better because those more varied events you note are on primetime NBC.  However, the Summer Games is great for its volume of sports like badminton, ping pong, shooting, archery, rowing, team handball, wrestling, weightlifting, etc. that are shown on CNBC at 2am.  I like watching top performances of obscure sports that I never get to see.  To that end, I love watching curling and biathlon in the Winter Games.

And I think I was wrong in treating the games as a singular rather than a plural.

Boy, I could argue that one, based on your apparent ignorance of modern libraries, but really, why bother?

Mugato: Do people really still give a fark about the farking Olympics?

Truth be told, I agree w/ this. The Olympics are absolutely nothing than a collection of games that nobody would ever watch right now, but somehow, because its the OLYMPICS & its only once every four years, somehow I'm magically supposed to care. Why would I take three weeks out of my life to watch badminton, archery, curling, windsurfing & every other nonsensical sport out there when I'm not watching it now?

Put it this way: if you're sitting at home on a Sunday afternoon watching competitive table tennis, the vast majority of people would find this to be incredibly strange. But somehow because OMG IT'S THE OLYMPICS!!!1!1 somehow this means it's interesting & you just have to watch this compelling table tennis match between Angola & Mongolia.

News flash: You don't. It's frankly just as pathetic & uninteresting as any other table tennis match that you could find on The Ocho.

People who will drop everything to watch the Olympics are typically drawn to it because they love the pageantry, the pomp & circumstance, and the spectacle that it's famous for.

But just because it dresses up pretty, doesn't mean it's interesting. Because save for hockey, basketball and track & field, lets face it, the games are not that interesting.

Everything surrounding it, perhaps. But the games themselves? Sorry, but I'm fresh out of farks to give.

Since the Olympics became a bastion of professionalized fringe sports supported by non-stop commercials both before and after the event, I have lost interest.

The Wide World of Sports must have pissed you off. How dare people show interest in niche sports every 4 years, what an outrage!

There's a reason Wide World of Sports is not on TV anymore.

No matter where the Olympics are NBC will ruin them with tape delays and "heartwarming" stories about the athletes.

The same reason some people watch the Super Bowl and not the regular season.  The same reason some people will watch Star Wars but not all the other SciFi in the theater.  The same reason most people listen to Christmas music in December and not the rest of the year.  Some people like things in small doses but not large ones, especially if that dose has the absolute best in the world who have been training for years to peak at that one moment.
