Of course it's on the lawn, who can keep one of those things indoors?

I'm definitely checking this thing out later. Carmel By The Sea is a strange little town. It's illegal to chew gum or wear high heels. They don't enforce the shoe thing but it makes it impossible to sue the city if you twist your ankle on the crappy sidewalks. Up until a few years ago it was illegal to have live music in a bar or restaurant. Lived there for a few years and I'm glad to be on the other side of the peninsula now.

That is a nice dinosaur! I want to know more of the backstory.

Your yard dinosaur really rex the neighborhood.

I'd like to see a cute little yard gnome in it's mouth.

Rich people problems. It's a shame because it's beautiful, I imagine even lovelier now that it has a dinosaur.

As cool as that is, I'd have to say something that size is more than a lawn ornament.

City officials have told the owner he must submit a design review application and obtain approval from the city's planning department within 10 days.  The department requires all exterior structures and building alterations to undergo review.

It's clearly not a "structure" or a "building alteration." Leave the Tyrannosaurus alone.

I'd like to see a town where an ordinance is passed that requires every homeowner to put up a dinosaur lawn ornament or sculpture of some kind. But you could only have so many of a particular species per subdivision. After all, there are hundreds of different dinosaur species known, and they all deserve some recognition.

well since it is neither of those things piss off regulatory assholes.

google provides the building and other codes for carmel and there may be a set back issue but all the codes reference building not statues/sculptures/art work.

It is.  The most self-centered, pretentious assholes in the country live there.  I lived in Pacific Grove for 3 years and found the "charm" of Carmel wore off after about 30 seconds of being there.

You can bet codes for statues and artwork will be on the books very soon.

Those sculptures are amazing. Anyone going to the site should also scroll to the previous images too. The giant scorpion and locust are pretty cool.

Would like to know exactly where these are located.

"It became trapped in his mouth" and "he would not drop it" are sort of mutually exclusive, no?

How could anyone be so clueless?

Was actually up there for the first time last month. Went to the museum -- which is great. Walked around Drumheller and went up into the mouth of that dinosaur. The stairs are excruciating, but the view is awesome. Thanks for the pic.

Took a half-day Badlands tour while I was there, too. Way, way cool. . . .

But not everyone is happy with the new addition to this neighborhood.

Coz there ain't no trash like rich white trash. . . .

Looks like the Pine Cone to me. I got to call the cops on their delivery guy once. Had an apartment above the 5th Avenue deli, and he was putting the papers out at four AM with his radio blaring. I only did it in hopes that the incident would make it into the Pine Cone's police blotter. It didn't.

CONFORM, CITIZEN

Anybody that lives here knows a T-Rex ornament that size will never fly. There was a lawsuit in PG (that might still be going) last year over a wind chime. Not even a large wind chime, but a standard size.

If you try to change out a window, even on the back of the house without a permit you will have a city inspector so far up your ass you'll choke on it. If you have weeds in your yard the city will start threatening you. It's crazy over here.
It is beyond me why this guy thought he could get away with doing this. It's a cool statue but the guy has to realize that the city values the millions of dollars in tourism that pretentious douche bags bring in far more than his rights to decorate his own yard.

My father tried to erect a tree fort in his backyard for my little brother last year and the neighbor complained so the city came by, red-tagged it and made him remove the entire thing. This was in PG, which isn't even as bad as Carmel.

The Herald. Letters to the editor there can generally be categorized as hateful, delusional, or all of the above.

This paper doesn't shy away from hard-hitting news coverage either:

Ah, dammit. Beaten to the punch again. Oh, well, I'm with Mrs. Wood. A mouth full of lawn ornaments would really give the T. rex a back story, make it more of an action piece. Like Bambi meets Godzilla. Q.V.
