100 Watt Walrus: Prophet of Loss: thisisarepeat: Great, now how the fark am I going to pick out a gift for my siblings crotchfruit?

A gift card to the toy store so they can get whatever they want. That way, you don't run the risk of getting a similarly named toy knock off instead of what they want because you don't watch six hours of toy commercials cartoons everyday.

Yeah, a great way to become a favorite aunt or uncle. Kids love unwrapping gift cards.

Now, if you're only buying a gift out of obligation, than sure. Why not.

You obviously have forgotten what its like to be a kid. I would have gladly taken a gift card over Grandma's well meant "Young Mutant Ninja Frogs".

"Irregardless" is not a word.

Yes, it is, much to my dismay.

onyxruby: This is the type of absurd insanity that comes from having too much time and too few real world problems to deal with. Seriously, if you want to buy a girl a boy toy just go down the aisle with the toys she likes, pick out one that will make her heart go pitter patter and put it in the cart. I did just this very thing for a 5 year old's birthday party last week as she wanted toys that were considered boy toys.

Inconvenience to me = 0. Girl got the boy toy she wanted = 1.

Passing a law regulating this kind of thing = laughing stock of the world.

it's not a law

The imposition of gender confusion is mind boggling

rynthetyn: Good. When I was a little kid, I always felt vaguely insulted that the toy aisles were telling me what kinds of toys I should like.

Why don't you lay back on the couch and tell me how long the toy aisles have been talking to you and telling you what you can and can't do?

Yeah, what will happen when my niece still wants to play with Barbie dolls and Disney princesses, and my nephew wants Bionicles and Spider-Man action figures, irregardless of which aisle they are in?

Irregardless is actually a recognized word in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, and it is here.

Is this really a problem? Were they really gender-specific? I always assumed it was arranged by age group, then toy category. All the baby dolls, all the games, all the trucks, all the action figures, etc....never saw one that said boys or girls on it.
My son's Mad Scientist Lab (boys easybake oven) was with all the pink easybake ovens.....

Putting like objects together is a valid way of organization, and I don't see how they'll do it otherwise. If I want GI Joe's, I don't want to sort through Barbie dolls to get them. And no wants to sort through WWE destruct-o wrestling rink play-set to get at a Bratz doll liposuction clinic play-set. And it's not like the big toys manufactures are not going to be using pink on their boxes. They'll still be marked as far as kids eyes go. Also it doesn't say what the new organizational scheme will be, but if one side of the isle is "boys stuff," and on the other side of the isle is "girls stuff" that isn't really a change.

I just don't understand how this is heroic in any way?

fark you with a flaming pineapple.  You still sound retarded when you use a double negative in English.

Dont mind me, I'm still PISSED OFF about meriam webster making "racist" and "bigot" synonyms.  Fark it.  I'll just use use random words like a farking stroke victim and expect people to know what I mean.  I'll just wait for a dictionary to make my illiterate bullshiat source-able.

My daughter once had another little girl tell her that she wasn't a "real girl" because she liked to play with dinosaurs instead of dolls. My kid's feelers were hurt so to comfort her my sister bought my daughter a Paleontologist Barbie. She still preferred the dinosaurs.

Bonanza Jellybean: Perfectly reasonable, but hero tag? Really?

Hell yes. Shopping for toddlers is  insane when the aisles are gendered. They need to sort toys by age, not gender--that way you can get the three-year-old the blocks and not have to search twelve aisles to find it.

/Seriously, I have done this before. Put the toys by age and have done with it.

Heh.  My friends' daughter likes Transformers, Batman, and The Avengers toys.  The only "girl" toys she likes is the Monster High dolls, and she looks like she's about to die of embarrassment walking down the pink aisles of the girl toys sections to get to them.

Do you think she's lesbian?

They tried this a while back at Toys R Us and discovered most customers WANTED to know where the gender-specific toys are.

There are always exceptions, of course, but the reason most boys play with trucks and girls play with dolls isn't cultural imprinting or whatever. It's because most boys WANT to play with trucks and most girls WANT to play with dolls.

JayCab: I applaud them for getting rid of boy/girl  sections but they're still going to have boy/girl  aisles unless they stick toys in alphebetical order rather than putting Barbies and Bratz on the same aisle and because they're the same kind of toy while Transformers and GI Joe* are next door because they're the same kind of toy as well.

SeaMonkey311: So barbies next to GI Joes or what? This PC crap is getting ridiculous

I hate to tell you this, but GI Joes and Barbies are both dolls.

Yes, it's innate and not cultural at all. Why, for hundreds of thousands of years, male humans have evolved to play with trucks. It was very sad that none existed until now.

I seriously doubt any toy store would just mix all the toys together randomly. It's not like people won't be able to find the toys they want. It's just that instead of a blue aisle and pink aisle, you might have light sabers at one end and princess wands at the other.

Think of it like a grocery store that re-orders its merchandise. The regulars get a little peeved because they're used to pattern shopping. But someone who's never been in the store isn't affected by the change. Pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayo will still be presented in the same areas, its just that now they're over near the bread (and therefore the buns) rather than being near the picnic supplies and beer.

Doubtful. More likely that the mom has always thought of tomboys as being freaks and would hate for her daughter to associate herself with any of them.

Barbie dolls in Tonka trucks!  My cousin and I would give her Barbies Twiggy haircuts and drive them into my grandparents' swimming pool.  I had a whole roadtrip liquor store stickup girls martyrdom storyline.  Sometimes, Boba Fett would stalk them in a MASK mobile.

Jim_Callahan: Wait, UK toy stores are indexed to the predominant gender of the target audience?

... how the fark does anyone find anything there?  The US has had categories like "action figures" and "video games" and "bicycles" and so on, since I was a kid at least.  I suspect because they wanted you to actually be able to find what you were looking for so you could farking buy it.

//And how do you deal with shiat that doesn't have a specific target gender, like LEGO and so on?  They just not sell that in the UK?

If you've seen Lego sets in the last 20 years, they have themes attached to them. The only place you're going to find just plain Lego bricks is a Lego store. Your normal department store is going to have Pirate Lego and Fairytale Castle Lego sets.
