He's worried that girls won't be forced to grow up with the notion that they're supposed to be home keepers and stove jockeys, as is shown by the "proper" toys girls are supposed to play with.

Bullshiat.  Its more about Smoking GNU not being able to reconcile the fact that she expects her boyfriend to fix her car, but can't sew a patch on his torn pants.  Though her boyfriend doesnt repair cars for a living, he just had decent parents, and she is basically useless.

Smoking GNU is a dude. Pay attention. The name refers to an African BBQ, that's manly, right?

Oh, and blue was a girls color, soothing and associated with The Virgin Mary. Pink was a warm color for boys. The whole pink = girls solidified in the 1950's.

I remember when I was very little (like so little it's one of my earliest memories) I wanted to buy a my little pony with brushable hair. I persisted and got it, and didn't have fun, but this was after the discouragement of every family member present that it wasn't the sort of thing I should have because it was for girls.

25 years later I'm a repressed transsexual who hates the world. I'm sure it's a direct correlation.

Well apparently my little pony is for boys now too. At least according to the bronies.

Esroc: ThatDarkFellow: Esroc: My mom accompanied me and my daughter shopping once and my daughter dragged her over to the toys while I grabbed some groceries. By the time I made my own way over there my daughter was throwing a fit because my mom refused to let her down the "boy" aisle and kept trying to make her look at barbies and shiat. My daughter is more of a superhero/ninja turtles kinda kid.

I chewed my mom out about enforcing gender stereotypes on my kid and had a very awkward drive home.

/bought my daughter a badass Hulk figure that she'd been wanting so her SSj Broly could battle him.
/love my kid

Your mom sounds like she raised an asshole

So if someone, especially a family member, was telling your four year old that she's forbidden from playing with superhero's because she's a girl, you'd be perfectly cool with that?

I feel bad for your kids/future kids.

Nah, that's not it. I wouldn't chew my mom out in public for trying to buy my daughter a toy. You probably embarrassed her.

Isn't it Roosevelt in the photo? (FDR not Teddy)

Good on UK TRU to say "Hey kids, now really can be a kid, we don't care who you are"

Sad on folks who are all "but, but, OUTRAGE, kids might be inclined to XXXX if we let them play with YYYY"

Even more sad for those who are rollin', rollin', trollin', trollin'

Cheers for ESROC and raising a BA daughter -- I have three. One is my sports-loving, stat quoter. My middle is more girly, but would rather play Batman lego than dolls. Baby hasn't decided yet.

Don't worry, they like stuffed animals and I have more webkins than you can shake a stick at.

I'm dubious this is hero tag material. Interesting - maybe.

Wait, UK toy stores are indexed to the predominant gender of the target audience?

... how the fark does anyone find anything there?  The US has had categories like "action figures" and "video games" and "bicycles" and so on, since I was a kid at least.  I suspect because they wanted you to actually be able to find what you were looking for so you could farking buy it.

//And how do you deal with shiat that doesn't have a specific target gender, like LEGO and so on?  They just not sell that in the UK?

2013-09-07 09:07:31 AM
Yeah this is great news indeed! How dare we make it easy on parents to have the opportunity to help children develop their gender identity. We should all be forced to raise androgynous robot boy/girl automatons whether they like it or not and if we remove everything that distinguishes the two sexes then we can make this a reality. No but this is ridiculous. Equality is a good thing however most girls want to be girls and most boys want to be boys and acknowledging this within society and catering for it should not be seen as discrimination. Making sure that all toys are marketed in a `gender neutral` way to not offend those who might want to assume a different gender role, however, is patronising. There is nothing wrong with girls wanting to play like boys and vice versa but it is better to accept people for this than to make everything unisex. By doing so at the expense of the majority so as to avoid offence, you're implying it's abnormal in the first place. Rant over.

My 4 year old is playing now with a Disney castle filled with the cast from Dora all the Disney Princesses along with Spider-Man, Captain America and I think Daredevil is in there. Also some of the spongebob character.  Most of the superhero action figures are leftovers from when I was a kid but some are new.  Of course my 4 year old is a girl, I doubt a 4 year old boy would allow any female influence on playtime so the Disney Princess castle is out.
Oh, gotta run the dog just took off with Wolverine in his mouth

This is the type of absurd insanity that comes from having too much time and too few real world problems to deal with. Seriously, if you want to buy a girl a boy toy just go down the aisle with the toys she likes, pick out one that will make her heart go pitter patter and put it in the cart. I did just this very thing for a 5 year old's birthday party last week as she wanted toys that were considered boy toys.

Inconvenience to me = 0. Girl got the boy toy she wanted = 1.

Passing a law regulating this kind of thing = laughing stock of the world.

It's not brilliant at all.  It's actually stupid as fark.

There is a specific marketing logic involved in how grocery stores and other stores are laid out.  There is also a specific reason certain products are put on shelves right at the checkout lines.  You don't put tires next to the dairy aisle.  You might consider putting cereal near the dairy aisle, but I don't have all the research to pull from.

The REASON "girl toys" are put near other "girl toys" is because those are the types of toys that girls are TYPICALLY interested in.  There is no toy store law that forbids girls from going down the "boy toys" aisle.  Toys that appeal to a specific type of child are grouped together to encourage impulse purchases of things one might not have known about.

It's just like in video stores, where they group titles by genre.

I'm sick and tired of people looking for new, manufactured versions of fantasy "oppression" to overcome.

Bonanza Jellybean: Perfectly reasonable, but hero tag? Really?

Yes, considering how long toy companies (and society) have FORCED people into a gender, yeah, the Hero tag IS warrented when someone finally realizes that you don't have to play with certain toys because you are a certain gender.
