Mid_mo_mad_man: Burns was to easy of a target and was one dimensional as a character. Charles was a better surgeon then hawkeye and no easy mark. Plus he actually had a heart.

This is correct. Case in point: Morale Victory:

"Don't you see? Your hand may be stilled, but your gift cannot be silenced if you refuse to let it be. The gift does not lie in your hands. I have hands, David. Hands that can make a scalpel sing. More than anything in my life I wanted to play, but I do not have the gift. I can play the notes, but I cannot make the music. You have performed Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Chopin. Even if you never do so again, you've already known a joy that I will never know as long as I live. Because the true gift is in your head and in your heart and in your soul. Now you can shut it off forever, or you can find new ways to share your gift with the world - through the baton, the classroom, or the pen. As to these works, they're for you, because you and the piano will always be as one. "

bigpeeler: Charles was a better character.

Sacrilege.

While Frank Burns was a better comedic foil, his character was limited by the fact that he had no redeeming qualities.  Winchester was at least acknowledged to be a brilliant surgeon; too good, in fact, to have been assigned to a MASH unit (except he pissed of the wrong people).  AFAIK, this is why the actor that played Burns quit, and why Winchester had more flexibility as a character.

I wondered why the TV show is on History instead of Comedy here in Canada. Then I started watching it every day and it makes sense. When I was a kid I just got the jokes. Now in middle age I get everything else.

Mad Scientist: FNG: As a life long fan, who still watches re-runs, that was pretty funny.

Glad I'm not the only one.

/I've eaten a river of liver, and an ocean of fishia

that's one of my favorite episodes.  My heart breaks when Hawkeye has to get yanked away from the morsels shipped from the Chicago BBQ joint at the end.

Seconded.

If the movie didn;pt spend a full half an hour on the football game I would agree.

and if I hadn't read the book about 5 times before seeing the movie I would agree.

//also, too much mumbling in the movie.

I'm just going to leave this here:
I think Trapper was a better character than BJ.

/nothin's gonna harm y'all lessin you leave ol' Uncle Trappers arms.

real_headhoncho: Mid_mo_mad_man: Charles was a better character.

Charles was one of those "characters" that everyone felt needed to be taken down a peg or two, but Charles knew exactly what his position was and wouldn't budge an inch, and the Korea War would be forced to go around him then make him move.  There were times you could see him crack or even just fall apart, but at the end of the series, he was the same as when he was introduced.
.

One of my favorites was when Hawkeye's father went ifn for surgery and as he and Charles waited for the phone call from the hospital (everyone else was at the bowling tournament with the marines) they talked about their fathers and Charles said one of the most profound but simple things: "I had a Father, whereas you had a Dad"

csi_yellowknife: Everyone follows the "Radar's Head Rule" right? If you see Radar in the opening credits, it's still pretty good. Otherwise it might have Klinger seeing dead people, Hawkeye fake sneezing because he almost drowned, BJ's sideburns, or Margret's off-putting perm.

/still some great moments in the later seasons, but a lot of forced melodrama as well

Alda took it over and used it as a soapbox and excuse to chew the scenery.

Possibly my favorite episode is when Winchester anonymously gives chocolates to the orphanage at Christmas.

The stuttering episode. He defends a young man that is labeled stupid due to stuttering. Later you find out his sister stutters
