FTA: Survey shows that 65% of incoming Harvard freshmen are virgins-liars.

No surprise there.

That doesn't seem terribly surprising.

Ask them the same question when they go home for Xmas.  Bet that number drops significantly.

To be fair, roughly that percentage of Harvard freshmen are Asian students who spent the better part of their teenage lives locked up in their rooms doing SAT practice problems.

I don't think people are going to like learning that Harvard is asking applicants about their sexual histories.

Sex surveys are something you can never trust one way or the other. In high school, according to our survey answers, we were having coke fueled orgies every half hour.

FTA: "...because most American kids actually don't have sex while they're in high school. A 2011 study by the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that less than two thirds of high school graduates had lost their virginity."

So less than 66%, let's give it 60% for argument's sake.  60% have lost their virginity?  Wouldn't that be "most"?

It was always promised that college would be this hedonistic playland of sexual delights. I, however, did NOT get my fair share in college and still cling to a bit of lingering regret and resentment. I could have slutted the fark out of that place, if only I wasn't so shy and undesirable.

It's an optional survey. If Harvard knows, it's because the kids wanted them to know.

She did in fact say she was too shy.

If you sit around in life and hope for other people to make the moves or do things for you, you'll probably just end up not getting what you want.

Whenever I took surveys in high school about sex and drug use I would lie my a$$ off. According to my answers I was partying every weekend, which was completely untrue. I went to a few parties with alcohol a semester and I probably smoked weed three times my whole high school career. I entered college with some oral sex experience but no penetration, I tried during prom but it was both of ours first time and I was too tight and he went off too early. So I entered college a virgin, but I never would have admitted it at 18.

Then she'd get complaints she was too aggressive and men are the hunters who make the first move and approaching them is just emasculating them.

She'd get those complaints from whom? Stated like that, you're making a blanket sexist statement. Plenty of guys would think it was pretty great if a woman made a move. And you haven't even mentioned the influence of slut shaming coming from other women. I'd argue that other women are the bigger influence for convincing you ladies to not take initiative in relationships.

In any case, if your goal was to go out and take initiative for yourself about something, saying "Ah well I won't do it because others will disapprove" is a 100% effective way to accomplish the opposite of that goal.

At the last school I worked at a few of the kids had questions about a sex and drugs survey the juniors filled out, some of them had not heard of some of the drugs on the survey (it was a really isolated community) and all of them said they lied. About half said they were as pure as the driven snow and half claimed to be crack smoking smack addicts with HIV getting laid three times a day.

I wad proud of all of them.

Hey, I met my mate over the internet. I used to basically live in a computer lab. I don't know how this dating shiat actually works, only hearsay from others.

But I would guess not being treated like a throwaway drunken fark when you're an ugly girl is a big reason not to approach dudes.

Pretty much this.

Listening to us talk in high school, you'd think we were all acid-soaked Hell's Angel's mamas. In college, maybe half of us were ACTUALLY having sex and a quarter of us had used anything harder than pot by the time we graduated; and those Venn diagrams didn't intersect by much.

My stats professor called one particular formula the liars' coefficient (or something like that) because it was used to control for untrue answers in surveys. I don't work with research that uses that formula so I don't remember much about it, other than thinking I had never told the truth on those surveys and how do you control for 100% false data....

She said she was shy and undesirable. Now me, I'm ugly. Not shy but I knew better than to expect anyone to be intetested sober. The last thing I would do was approach anyone. There was no need to go looking for insults.

You really need to read things in context before you call me biatchy for no reason.

There are some upsides to the recent trend of "extended adolescence" lasting up through age 30 or so.

This is not surprising I knew tons of girls who showed up at college as virgins. Nine out of ten were not virgins by Xmas break and even the ugly ones were having sex by the end of their freshman year.

i don't see how this is a big deal.  i was a virgin when i first went to college too.

But here's the thing - you assumed I thought you were ugly. Actually, you're not. Your context was absolutely invisible since it involved an assumption in your head.

I'd bet you would have gotten better results than you expected, but the problem is that you couldn't magically know you could get better results without seeing it happen. And seeing it happen would have taken trying - sometimes failing, sometimes not. Not everyone would be attracted to you, but hey that's the reality for each and every human being.

Society primarily conditions men to do that approaching (or on the flip side, conditions women to wait to be approached). It's stressful for the dudes too, just as it is for you. And just like anyone else, the dudes get shot down for being arbitrarily unattractive to whomever they approached.

I'm sure it's also stressful being a woman and waiting and hoping for someone likable to appear before you and sweep you away. But reality is the way it is for some reason, and waiting around isn't much more effective than wishing.

You guys are either incredibly naive or incredibly dumb.

They ask these questions to find out what incoming freshmen are up to, and incoming freshmen answer because they like messing with the researchers' heads. Like it's been forever. And it's Harvard's business because they need to know how many units of penicillin to have on hand for the gonorrhea outbreak after homecoming.

I didn't say you thought I was ugly, I said I was ugly. I actually based it on being told I was ugly throughout high school by boys. By university, my expectations for someone being interested were the same as expecting aliens to show up on the front lawn. Simply didn't seem possible so I didn't spend time thinking about it.

Hmmm I don't know where you guys went to school but I think most people in my high school and all our sister schools were having sex or at least hooking up to some degree.  I'm not saying everyone got some, but it was more abnormal to not hook up.  Of course I went to a small private school with only ~250 people, but we had parties with kids from other private schools in the city and everyone seemed to be hooking up at some point or another.  Also drugs were rampant.  And when I went to visit friends in another town it was the same thing.  Even going on vacation meant getting a vacation boyfriend for the week.  Sometimes it was just nice to get out of town to hook up with new people, or hooking up with tourists visiting your city.  I dunno, Hell it wasn't uncommon to partner swap in the same night or for multiple couples to be hooking up in the same room at the same time.  While college had it's wild moments, high school was way more adventurous for me.

/Maybe teenage me and most people I knew were all weirdos and abnormal.
