I was only 13 then but I do recall it being cancelled fairly quickly.  Like mid first season?

Six weeks. Worse than the Magic Hour which had eight.

Like 5 weeks.

I wish they'd given him more time and had done it the way he wanted - as more of a variety show, rather than a straight clone of Carson, et al.  He had a piano in his desk, with a finger-level camera, IIRC.  That was pretty damned cool at the time.

Watched one half on one episode. Cringe worthy. I remember saying "I'll check it out in a few months to see if gets any better".

lulz

subby be trollin', but the first season of Conan was pretty damn horrible.

That lasted over a year. Joan Rivers on the other hand had about a 6 week run.

I work at a poster place and we have some old chevy chase show posters laying around, they don't sell........you can buy them for a dollar, think we only have 12 left so you better hurry

Chevy Chase is by all accounts a huge asshole.  So, perhaps, a successful show where he has to interact with all kinds of different people just wasn't in the cards

I was 15 and thought I was the most awkward person to ever be around others.  Then Chevy came on and I realized I was probably being way too hard on myself.
Dude was just dying out there every episode; begging your audience to laugh or applaud is just sad.

Luckily for Fox they financed the whole debacle with the Underhills Am Ex card.

Who's got the old SNL polaroid of Chase in the foreground and Belushi behind him giving him the finger?

I clicked on the headline thinking "Are they talking about Chevy Chase or Pat Sajak?"

. . .then afterwards I realized it could also apply to Whoopi Goldberg's brief attempt at a late-night talk show.

Damn, there were a lot of shiatty late-night shows that came around in the early 90's when Carson retired.

I was 15 at the time, so watching late night talk shows tv weren''t real high on my list of things to do.

Even tho I thought chevy was funny, I remember watching it a bit, but thinking, well this NBA Jams game isn't going to play itself.

That was a weird picture of the Dana Carvy show.  I did not remember Chase being a guest.  Must have been right after Dana going the breast feeding bit.

My favorite moment on the Chevy Chase talk show was toward the end of its short run.  Burt Reynolds was the guest, and complained that his ex wife, Loni Anderson, went on the Johnny Carson show and talked about their divorce.

CHEVY CHASE:  Well, aren't you doing the same thing here?
BURT REYNOLDS:  Yes.  But here, no one's watching.

Fergusen is worse.

I remember watching that show. I sort of liked watching him go back to his Weekend Update routine, opening with "I'm Chevy Chase and you're not."

All I do know is that Arsenio should have never quit his talk show. I loved that show. I hope his new one is still as good.

If for no other reason, stuff like this is why that show should be remembered. Ridiculous energy going on....

I was working on a comedy that filmed in the old Chevy Chase Theatre the week O.J. went off, I was amused to find they still had Chevy's old backdrop flats lined up in the wings...it's used for Nickelodeon shows now. The one funny thing is it's not Chevy's first train wreck show filmed on Sunset Blvd-after Peter Ivars was murdered Chevy Chase agreed to fill-in for the planned syndicated version they taped with real Hollywood punks @ KTLA.  Chevy got in a fistfight with the crowd, & walked off. The pilot was taped with Andy Kaufman, the last thing he ever shot before he died(he doesn't look too bad for being that sick):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R3w9E7Kzy4

Howard Stern vowed if he did a formal network talk show he'd tape at the Chevy Chase Studio & have them re-install the marquee with the giant Chevy cut out hanging off the painting scaffold

"1993 Gave us the worst late night talk show of all time, if you don't count Conan..."

Oh please. Everyone starts out rough but Conan is talented even if he doesn't do the best interviews. His monologue and bits were funny when he was on NBC.

And as for Craig Ferguson being horrible, I'll feed the trolls. Ferguson is the best late night host out there and even his interviews of guests are worth watching if only because he never does the standard press interview. Craig talks about whatever he wants and the interviews are more just a shooting the shiat kind of thing. A good example of that was when Stephen Fry was on The Late Late Show. Craig basically did a cold open of the show and said Stephen Fry was going to be on and they were going to talk about whatever Fry wanted to. So now might be a good time to change the channel because you may find the subjects he picks boring.

And i'm psyched that Geoff Peterson now has two moving arms.

Didn't Jerry Lewis have a talk show in the 80s or 90s that only lasted a week?  I only saw one of those and that was enough!

Looking at Chevy's show again, it's hard to explain why it was so bad.  Kind of like a lot of his movies--he's got a specialized talent that is great in some situations, really annoying in others.

2013-09-06 08:42:53 PM
i have a clear memory of an opening monologue joke about him having hamsters in his pants.

that is all.

I'm not a late night talk person, never been one, but I vaguely remembered when this came and went...

Poor Chevy, he's a funny guy, he should have at least gotten the news right.

Interesting takeaway from that little segment was Newt Gingrich saying that "everyone" should have health care...

I've never thought he was funny in anything.   SNL, vacation, other movies, community, nothing.  He's just not funny.
