The Cadillac Welfare Queen is a concept derived in a Upper-class Hollywood Alzheimer's daze that has survived to this day because it makes people feel better about being self-absorbed amoral shiateheads.

These investigations just never really pan out for the GOP. It's like when they look for election fraud and the only people they find doing it are republicans.

as Lee atwater admitted on his deathbed, the "CADILLAC driving welfare queen" was a way for Ronald Reagan to shout the n-bomb at southern whites in a way they would instantly understand but still allow him plausible deniability with the media

I ate government cheese and went to foodbanks and worked to get myself through college so don't play the bootstrappy card with me missy.  I am also very thankful that that sort of thing exists and will gladly support anything that helps people live with dignity through down times in their lives.

I'll get off my soapbox now, I'm getting tedious and their are fart jokes to be made in TFD>

Who, more often then not, suck on some Gubmint teet or another and often times  either aren't aware of it or simply refuse to admit that what they do is the same kind of dependency as foodstamps for poor folks. GOP Midwestern farmers come to mind, or those Teabaggers who don't want anything to change about healthcare because they don't need insurance, guz if'n they get sick, Big Medicine will treat them whether they can afford it(which case they'll just squelch on the outrageous bill) or not, in which case they'll just be bumped over to Medcaid without really understanding that that is what's happened.

So, food stamps covered the bottle deposit on the mountain dew? ok

You are aware of that entire story, correct?

How it was inflated out of proportion to what actually happened?

I was making a funny.  Or attempting to at least, addressing the outrage that food assistance should only be used to buy whatever food is deemed acceptable and necessary to those outraged that anyone is even on a food assistance program.

Which of course is hogwash.

OIG inspectors and auditors are elected now? Last I heard they were civil servants that work careers that span multiple administrations.

You're right. There's only one man virtuous enough to investigate this, thedarkest chapter in the history of the republic. A man who can successfully navigate the treacherous political waters he is sure to encounter in a dispassionate, non-partisan manner. A man unafraid to leave no stone unturned, no cigar unsmelled.

A man named Kenneth Winston Starr.

Riothamus: I don't think the drug testing is really about making sure that welfare recipients stay off drugs. The GOP seems much more interested in making welfare as degrading as possible.

It's also why so many conservatives want charity to somehow pick up the slack for the social safety net. They want miserable people to beg for table scraps even when it's cheaper to give them a full meal.

Watching poor people suffer grinding poverty is their greatest aphrodisiac.  I bet the erections they get can cut diamonds.

Dubya's_Coke_Dealer: Conservatives would rather a thousand starve than one person cheat the system.

Let's throw a little reality in:

Conservatives just KNOW all welfare recipients are on drugs. So they implement mandatory drug testing (of course by this logic everyone who gets a payment from the government should be drug tested, but it's just the poors who it actually happens to). And the actual percentage? 2.6. Savings to the traxpayers of Florida? Well, actually, it cost more money than it saved.

http://www.givedirectly.org/  just gives money to poor people. Doesn't make them take classes, doesn't make them buy a cow, just gives them money.

No one they have interviewed has spent the money on drugs and booze. Every single one of them did something productive with it, like replace their straw roofs, or bought tools, or whatever.

The fact is, people (that's actual people, not corporation people) who are getting charity almost always deserve it, and spend it as wisely as they can.

Dafatone: Besides, who the fark cares if EBT is used on lobster and steak.

How much EBT money do you get a month?  If someone wants to blow most of it on steak and lobster once and then have to scramble to find food, sucks to be them.  I'm not saying they should be allowed to, because that's dumb.  But I don't get the outrage

Because some people are afraid that someone, somewhere might be eating well for once in their miserable existence.

according to Snopes the recipet is Genuine, BUT the man responsible for this transaction is in jail.   Seems he stole his GF's EBT card meant for her and her children, and bought the steak and Lobster and then attempted to re-sell them for cash in the parking lot.   He was apprehended because the check-out clerk twigged that his transaction wasn;t legit and she called the cops who found he attempting to hawk the meat in the parking lot and found him in possesion of the stolen card

ongbok: Excess payments through the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation averaged excesses of $209,000 per payout.

Sounds like farmers corporate farmers are the ones driving up to the welfare office in Cadillac's.

Well duh. If they swear it's a farm truck, they can deduct the purchase price from their taxes. And it's not just Cadillacs, either - Porsches, BMWs, or any other big truck/SUV that weighs in at more than 6,000 pounds all fit nicely in that loophole, if you title them in the farm corporation's name.
