Katolu: monoski: MFAWG: Welfare cheats are always blah people that live in the city.. Everybody knows that.

I hear they have refrigerators to keep all that free food in. How farked up is that?

I also heard that some of them actually WORK but still can't make ends meet...fark 'em they're poor. Pull up those boot straps on some cheap cowboy boots from Goodwill!

I ate government cheese and went to foodbanks and worked to get myself through college so don't play the bootstrappy card with me missy.  I am also very thankful that that sort of thing exists and will gladly support anything that helps people live with dignity through down times in their lives.

I'll get off my soapbox now, I'm getting tedious and their are fart jokes to be made in TFD>

Oh yeah? Well I heard about abuse of the system from my mom about one of her friend's daughters who prefers to be on welfare so she doesn't have to work and can smoke pot all day.

And my mom wouldn't lie about such a thing!

//And mom's are always right; I heard it on an advertisement about how a mom discovered this one neat trick.

AndEhBus: brap: The Cadillac Welfare Queen is a concept derived in a Upper-class Hollywood Alzheimer's daze that has survived to this day because it makes people feel better about being self-absorbed amoral shiateheads.

You are ignorant. I personally know a few welfare queens. Handouts and assistance are outrageously excessive.

Again, I have personal experience with individuals with way more food stamps and assistance than they need. It's farking ridiculous.

I have personally seen multiple woman ask friends and family if they need groceries because they have way more food stamps than they could use.

One in particular also attended school for 7-years dropping out after receiving financial aid and only getting a degree when she hit the "limit" of how many times she could drop out and go back. She received thousands in grants. She always took out maximum student loans and racked up about $80,000 in debt. On account of her low income she is now getting most of that forgiven. She is also on housing. She had her BF move in and for almost 10 years hasn't bothered to work because she was living off of school loans free housing and food. She recently graduated and has started working, She has made several comments that she may just quit and go back on housing so she doesn't have to work so much. She has had 1 child but recently had another.

It's been interesting in this time my wife and I have worked and put ourselves through school. together we make just enough not to get any assistance. She has about $60,000 in student loans and called about forgiveness under the Federal Governments new program. We were a little over the limit. But of course she scorned well you know who won't be paying hers -- referring to her friend. My wife has traditionally been very liberally minded. She actually has a social worker license. She believes the system is abused far more than used properly. Specifically because of her friend.

We have busted our asses and have about the same disposable income ...

The banks made a fortune on gambling and got bailed out, where is your outrage there?  The amount of money the banks received could fund food stamps for eleventy billion years.

Well, *technically* one can get their student loans forgiven, but it involves stuff like, say, agreeing to work in a public school (especially if you have a degree in physics or chemistry or another science) for X years.

I think there are other "Work for government, get student loans forgiven" deals, but it *requires you to work*.

Conservatives would rather a thousand starve than one person cheat the system.

Let's throw a little reality in:

Conservatives just KNOW all welfare recipients are on drugs. So they implement mandatory drug testing (of course by this logic everyone who gets a payment from the government should be drug tested, but it's just the poors who it actually happens to). And the actual percentage? 2.6. Savings to the traxpayers of Florida? Well, actually, it cost more money than it saved.

http://www.givedirectly.org/  just gives money to poor people. Doesn't make them take classes, doesn't make them buy a cow, just gives them money.

No one they have interviewed has spent the money on drugs and booze. Every single one of them did something productive with it, like replace their straw roofs, or bought tools, or whatever.

The fact is, people (that's actual people, not corporation people) who are getting charity almost always deserve it, and spend it as wisely as they can.

2013-09-06 05:33:41 PM
Overpayments are defined as payouts that rise at least 50 percent higher than the correct amount while totaling at least $5,000 per individual or $25,000 per organization, according to the analysis.

Well, when you define it that way....were there any??  And are they in prison?

I don't think the drug testing is really about making sure that welfare recipients stay off drugs. The GOP seems much more interested in making welfare as degrading as possible.

It's also why so many conservatives want charity to somehow pick up the slack for the social safety net. They want miserable people to beg for table scraps even when it's cheaper to give them a full meal.

I'm as liberal as they come, and as a good liberal, I'm strongly in support of social welfare programs (with caveats about effectiveness, equity, whatnot...). But I'm also someone who appreciates a well-designed analysis, and this isn't.

FTA: "Overpayments are defined as payouts that rise at least 50 percent higher than the correct amount while totaling at least $5,000 per individual or $25,000 per organization, according to the analysis."

There are two problems with this comparison: one, it ignores the base rate (i.e. there are far more individuals than there are organizations); and two, it sets a different bar for overpayment for the two entities. As a thought experiment, imagine that you have 10 million people receiving food stamps, and each was overpaid by $100, far below the $5000 bar per individual; meanwhile, 100 organizations were overpaid by $50,000. As far as this analysis is concerned, no individuals were overpaid, though the actual overpayment cost to individuals was $1,000,000,000, while the overpayments to organizations was only $5,000,000, half a percent of the aggregate individual overpayment.

Intentional or not, it's incredibly misleading.

I always see people ramble about welfare queens, I've never met one before. My former job I was helping poor people who just encountered a major loss in their life (fire, earthquake, death, etc.) for a non-profit. Never met one in over two years going out multiple times a week.

I have no idea where people find all these "friends". People I know on food stamps who have maybe $150 to their name after rent and utilities are paid get less then $80 a month from the state and sometimes live in a section 8 housing project which is not free just reduced.

If you could just "ride the system" why do we have homeless people again?

It's intentional.  It was a directive through the executive branch to find that particular deviation which is geared towards farmers/corporations that receive farm aid.  That was the intent (ignore individual fraud which is small but in the thousands or more, and find variants that aren't even necessarily illegal - like crop insurance payouts that rise due to drought).  So don't look for charges to be filed against anyone soon.

Fraud isn't going to be individual, it's going to be organized so the "person you know" isn't going to be the ones that are being fraudulent.  But we've all heard the person buying lobster with food stamps and it's because they purchased it for pennies on the dollar most likely to fuel drugs and alcohol and other items that can't be purchased.  Ever notice how when you come across ticket scalpers, they always have more than one?  Like that only with food stamps.
