Heartbreaking loss. I would've felt better if the scored stayed 7-2 than it ending how it did. Felt just like Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS all over again (and it didn't help that MLBN showed a clip from exactly that after it happened).

Also, September callups are stupid. fine, extend the roster to 40 if you want, but you can still only use 25 in any given game.

So they sucked the whole time?

I hate to agree with the headline, but this is a typical boston/yankee game, I stopped watching when it was 7-2 only to see it 8-7 in the 9th.

So last night, I slept through my fantasy football QB getting me 65 points, and my hometown baseball team reminding people of 2004.

Life is good.  May not last, but still...a nice day for me.

\still think one of my favorite moments of the 2005 Opening Day was Mo getting a standing ovation

I fell asleep at 8:45 with a plate of nachos at my side.  No football, no wrestling, didnt finish the baseball game.  I am ashamed of myself.

Pet peeve about ESPN: when you click that link, or just about any link about a Yankees game, you're on the "ESPN New York" site.  From an ESPN baseball link I would expect to be able to click straight through to the standings, stats, and all the other things they normally have linked at the top of their baseball pages.  Instead, all the links at the top of the page go to sites for Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, etc.  Big pain in the ass.  Are there fans who actually like it this way?

2013-09-06 12:04:41 PM
So lemme get this straight.
Mo' blows the save and Koji extends his streak to 26 innings without coughing up a run and his consecutive batters out to 24.
INSANITY!

If this series continues this way, my facebook feed is going to be fantastic. That is, if any of my friends who are "fans" of The Other New York Team even watch when they're out of first.

There was plenty of choke on both sides.

I think part of what makes it sting (aside the manner in which the game played out) is that the Red Sox don't even really need these games while the Yankees are clawing.

That is crazy to me.  The Tigers can beat that Yankees.  I dont want the Yanks to make the playoffs for gamesmanship reasons, but never at the detriment of my team.

I agree. Any team that plays A-Rod while he's "suspended," even if it is NOT the Yankees, should miss the playoffs on principle.

Are they supposed to sacrifice a roster spot?  They cant send him down and benching him would penalize the rest of the players on the team.  I understand hating the Yankees and ARod but shiat I didnt know it went this far.

Believe me, a lot of Yankee fans (and you've heard from a few here) are not happy about having him playing right now.  Imagine if the Yankees DO make the playoffs?  The talk won't be about how a scrappy, injury-plagued team of minor league replacements banded together to beat the odds and hold on until some of the stars got back, it'll be about how the return of a steroid user sparked the team to make a late-season push.  No real fan of the Yankees or even of baseball in general (admit it - without A-Rod, the 2013 Yanks making the playoffs would be an incredible success story) is happy with the A-Rod situation right now.

This is true. But the thing is, let's be honest: Ever since he signed the Rangers contract, he's been a side show.  A very productive sideshow six months out of seven, but a sideshow nonetheless.  Between the retarded contracts, the steroids, the  Details photo shoot, farking Madonna, the 2004 glove-slap, and striking out to end the season two straight years, he's just fed the reputation of him over and over again.

Huh? Still feel it? Didn't it make 2004 that much sweeter?

In retrospect, I'm grateful for 78 and 86 and 03 (and all the lesser disappointments in between - 88 and 90 and 95 and 98 and 99). Made 04 what it was.

1) MLB should expedite his appeal and come to a decision.  They claim to have ironclad evidence, but can't just suspend him promptly, or even explain what the evidence is. The current situation makes a mockery of MLB's process, which is MLB's fault, but only MLB can solve it.
2) Faulting the Yankees for this is dumb.  They're playing the hand given to them, and vastly overpaying for the services rendered.  Why should 24 other Yankees be denied a playoff spot because of something A-Rod (allegedly, but very, very likely) did?
3) What other team will be playing A-Rod during his suspension?  I really thought this was a Yankees-only option.  Is he going to just show up in a Rangers uniform next week?

2004 was magical, flew from Oakland to Boston and back for Playoffs against Evil Empire and did it again for Cards Series. Totally a happy camper.

Got married in 78 and thought that was the Year. The beauty of Bucky "F*uckin" Dent is, Don Zimmer named him that on the line up card and it stuck.

Still married, still follow them, Royal Rooter forever, Red Sox Nation.

Before A-Rod's return, Yankee offensive production at 3B was either 29th or 30th in nearly all categories. Are the Yankees supposed to bench him -on principle- (yanno, while still paying him)? This is business.

/yes, I would've preferred he serve the suspension, but since he appealed, you gotta play the hand you're dealt

Second contract?  2013?: total sideshow.

Since he signed the Rangers contract in 2001?  He had 3 MVP awards and hit nearly 500 HR just since then.  He was arguably the best player in the AL for the first decade of that time period, and actually earned that first contract if you look at how much teams generally pay to add wins.  It was very expensive, but during that first contract (2001-2010), he averaged a ridiculous +7 WAR per year, which suggests a fair-market annual salary of $28-35M.  He was slightly underpaid for his performance, measured by the market he is in.  (The market is ridiculous, but if you hate that, you're mad at dozens of guys.  He was doing the work of two $15M/yr players.)

It's hard to call that a "sideshow".  He was more "main event".  He's utterly ruined his legacy, but it's silly to pretend that he was always a guy like 2011-2013 Manny Ramirez.  That was a side show.

And 29th only because the Marlins have a historically terrible offense, 3B included.

(Placido Polanco: Presently slugging .286, thus ushering in the Ed Lucas era.)

I'm a Mets fan that doesn't hate the Yankees.  I like that the Yankees make everyone hate NY.  The area kinda runs on hate.  This would fuel that hate for another century.

Besides, screw Selig.  He, and baseball/media as a whole, let steroids happen.  Sure, it would have been a huge mess to force testing in the 90s or 00s.  They might not even have gotten it done.  But they should have kicked and screamed about it, rather than just swim around in the cash while people hit a few dingers.

Steroids are cheating and cheating is bad.  People have ignored cheating in baseball for years.  Juicing to hit off of other juicers isn't that much worse than all the other types of cheating.

A-Rod should be suspended.  For 50 games, or 100 games, or if you really want to pile a 1st and 2nd offense together, 150 games.  I'd be fine with that.  But tacking on a whole bunch of games to make an "example" of someone is silly.

2013-09-06 08:16:47 PM
And I just want to watch the world burn.

/at least let the Mariners start taking steroids again. We were decent in the steroid era and only in that era.

2013-09-06 08:18:56 PM
Look, "playing like the Mets" this year is an excellent to dominant job by the starting pitcher (4/5 of the time), no offense at all, followed by a choke job in the late innings by the bullpen, ultimately culminating in a walk-off loss. So I think you got your order screwed up in the headline.
