Melissa Mayer just wanted everyone to have a better shopping experience.

I feel the need to post this again, because it really needs to be said over and over, but the Yahoo Sports redesign is the worst web site redesign in the history of the internet. It is indescribably awful in just about every way.

I'm not even someone who cares all that much about crap like this. Hell, after the Fark redesign, I remember thinking "what the hell's the difference?"

But this Yahoo thing...wow.

2013-09-06 10:21:51 AM
Here is the problem in 90% of redesigns....   the redesign is done almost purely from a GUI (look/feel) perspective, and not from a functionality perspective, especially in the realm of trying to as much as possible keep the same "breadcrumbs" to get to the same content as before.  So, the GUI people get their hands on it, make a bunch of changes and implement those, without much if any consultation about what the site is there to actually PROVIDE.

Sometimes there are reasons to change the flow of how to get to content, but, not usually, and, rarely, is there a good reason to make it HARDER to get to something, unless you specifically don't want people getting to it.

If it takes 3-4 clicks to get to information that took 1 click before (or, if it isn't there at all)... there is one of two reasons for that .... #1, poor redesign as described above that focused too much on GUI, or #2, the redesign was partially done to take away some content they didn't want you to have access to anymore.... it is like a magic trick... "Here, look at all of this new cool colorful stuff.... poof, the ball disappeared".

For them to have been miles ahead of ESPN, CBS and SI and now to be miles behind each of those is a pretty awful fall from grace.

They took the one positive attribute that they, their users, and everyone else knew separated them from the pack and was the source of their popularity -- the utilitarian, minimalist design -- and completely blew it up.

It would be like if McDonald's stopped serving french fries.

I feel like the same experience occurred with Cablevision / Optimum's TV listings guide (both on the television and on the internet). I want to be able to have somewhere that I can search for "Soccer", and get a text list of what channels are showing soccer, what games they are showing, and when. Apparently that is too much to ask for!

With Yahoo, it's not just their sports pages, they are actively farking up every single property they run. Mail sucks now, groups sucks now. After being fairly sure nothing would change, I now fear what they're going to Tumblr (shaddup).

2013-09-06 10:47:45 AM
I had to go check it out for myself, not being a regular Yahoo user.

That's a seriously ugly site.

2013-09-06 10:50:28 AM
Meh. I just use the app for fantasy football, and I only play one league there.

2013-09-06 10:55:07 AM
Yahoo re-designs something, it still blows. [checks calendar] Just as I suspected! It ends in "y!"

2013-09-06 10:57:33 AM
If don't play FF, but if the redesign is anything like the Flickr redesign, I pity you guys. I guess in Marissa's word, if it isn't broken, we need to break it.

It looks like a confused MySpace page. The shiat is horrible.

I feel the same way about Google Maps.  I don't know how to map a route with multiple destinations and they took out the distance key on the Android version.

...

Are we talking, like, Windows 8 GUI levels here?

it's fun not participating in fantasy football

I hated it at first. Still not a big fan but i'm starting to figure out the nuances. Doesn't hurt that Manning threw 7 TDs for me last night. Starting the season with a 50 point effort helps soften the blow of the redesign.

We're talking black backgrounds.  So yeah.  It's pretty bad.

Question for anyone using Yahoo: Is there a link to the Waiver priority list and I'm just not seeing it? I can see it when I go under the commissioner settings (to change priority), but can't find a link to where everyone else can see the order. I was able to see it easily last season, but can't find shiat in this redesign.

2013-09-06 11:24:53 AM
You know what also sucks? Scrolling down Awful Announcing's web page and then there's a farking pop-up that wants you to sign up for their shiatty newsletter.

2013-09-06 11:28:35 AM
It takes a special kind of retard to take time from their day to complain about something that they get for free.

Wait, where am I again?

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, but go to the League tab and look at the standings.

Nope, but thank you because your suggestion did help me actually find it. It's under "Managers" when you look at the League tab. They took away the standings one, guess they moved it to managers.

Totally bugged by that as well... fairly aggravating actually... I used the distance ruler all the time on G Maps.

I like how when they made the switch, they asked for comments on how to improve the site, but said "we aren't changing how it looks". I'm pretty sure every still said that it looks like shiat.

I'm looking at my league now.  The waiver order is the fifth column over in the standings sections.

WLT, Div, Points, Streak, Waiver, Moves

Nope. I'll continue to use 7 and if I am stuck with 8 in any given situation I will install 3rd party start. MS farked up here and I will be one of the many advocates pushing for the 8.1 upgrade to either include a "real" start button, or at the very least release a Pro version with a start button option.

Mark my words...it will happen. No need to get over it.

They've screwed up a bunch of stuff lately.  I can't figure out what they're trying to do.
I use yahoo for two things, fantasy sports and groups, because they were the best at both of those things.  Each has released a new format, and they both suck donkey balls.

Yea, not sure how I missed that. I'd swear that wasn't set up that way prior to the season starting. Thanks for pointing it out!

Oh, and as for the people whining about not being able to find career totals...it's called basketball-reference.com. Or pro-football-reference.com. Or baseball-reference.com. Way better than any other sites for that type of stuff.

2013-09-06 01:23:11 PM
So I'm not the only one! I try not to be the "I hate every re-design guy", but this is foul, and it hurts my eyes. I wish it would go elsewhere.

not nearly as bad as yelp removing the "draw your own search area box" tool

2013-09-06 01:39:26 PM
Okay, so I went to it and I don't see why y'all are biatching. What is it, specifically, that you have a problem with? It's easy to navigate and you don't really have to scroll for anything.

I guess I can see the complaint about not having career stats easily findable, but how the hell often does anyone use that? It's not something that should be given significant consideration in designing a page.

The old design looked a little outdated but everything was easy to find. This new layout is just unfamiliar for now - people will get over it.

I guess it's the usual internet complaint brigade crying about a minor change to their shallow, pointless lives.

Although one thing does irritate me - if you're going to make up projected stats out of thin air, why tell me someone is projected to have .1 fumbles? I mean, seriously. 1/10 of a fumble. How does that help me? It doesn't.

My problem with the Yahoo FF redesign is the background. I don't care that they moved stuff around, that is expected to happen and it only took me a few minutes to find what I wanted. But that dam background they added just annoys the hell out of me, it is very heavy on the eyes. Like I said before, it looks like a confused MySpace page.

Compared to the old version (which was very simple and unassuming) I can see why you dislike it. Doesn't really bother me, though.

The redesign is ugly

But I am more concerned about functionality

I normally use Chrome.  In Chrome, I am unable to change my lineup
I have to switch to Internet Explorer to change my lineup

A makeover that only works correctly in one browser?   Bad bad bad

I gave up on Yahoo several years ago in favor of ESPN.  Yahoo's stattracker went to hell when they made it free, partly because they seemed to not clue in that demand would be much higher.  Then they started randomly locking players over an hour before the game.  We had a person nearly lose a game because someone (I think it was Witten vs the Saints) got hurt and 30 minutes before kickoff they said he wouldn't play.  Yahoo wouldn't let him bench the player.  And it wasn't an isolated incident - three weeks later, multiple people got screwed over by Yahoo locking all the 1pm games at 11:30AM.  I shouldn't have to resort to commissioner tools to fix their own stupid mistakes, certainly not as often as I was.

I haven't had any complaints about ESPN since migrating over there.

And the new Yahoo looks really shiatty.  What was wrong with a graphics-light system they had, it worked far better than ESPN or CBS.

2013-09-06 03:36:51 PM
I don't care for cbssportsline's new design either. Not as bad as yahoo, but considering that our ff league pays for it, makes for a harder pill to swallow.
