Yeah. He has plans. Assad is an ally and a business partner. A very lucrative business partner. Any plans he has will include Assad staying exactly where he is.

Obviously the plan is to use all of Snowden's files against the US, which is why Snowden was hired by the Russians in the first place.

No.  I have this sense that Putin is pining for the glory days. He probably has a Soviet-style military uniform all tailored and ready to wear in public.

One thing you gotta give the Soviets and the Nazis.  They knew how to make snappy uniforms.

It'll take forever at that rate.  Better to blow up his launchers and render those rounds, shells and rockets useless.

Well yeah, if we're gonna make a whole big THING about it everytime he throws away a chemical weapon where somebody just happens to be. Better just to let him figure out how best to get rid of them, i mean, he is the one who bought them. I'd hate for my neighbor to offer advice on how to best handle my yard waste especially if the arsehole keeps calling the HOA on me for it.

I do know that the Russian Navy went through the Bosphorus yesterday. Mind you, I'm betting their "plans" involve a lot of sabre rattling and crying much like their "plans" these past 22 years since the fall of the one-party state.

Infernalist: "He can stay where he is. He just has to give up his CW capability."

I'm pretty sure the US had our moral high-horse take a shiat on the proposal to involve UN weapons inspectors.
And no-one's going to say "sure, CIA, come on in and toss our entire country looking for WMDs".
Even putting aside the unacceptable affront to any nation's sovereignty, there's our little history of effectively planting such 'evidence' when people we want to bomb come up clean.
(e.g. yellow cake, aluminum tubes)

So, no. Just giving up his CW capability is not a plausible option being extended to him.

Putin wouldn't be so tough chained to the Craftsman table saw in my basement.

The only reason Putin is involved in this is because if the Syrians put together this pipeline to deliver gas to Europe, with western help -- the Russian economy is dead. meat. Putin has to prevent an Iraq-type situation from happening in Syria.

Why then would Putin be supporting Assad, when Assad's regime was putting together the deal with Iraq and Iran? Putin's petroleum interest, like Turkey's, is continued chaos.

Obama's letting his ego get in the way of good judgment. Of all the things he could choose to focus his time and energy on he chooses this. Syria is a clusterfark. It is of no interest, it's not a threat, and we don't need to be there.

The amount of testosterone fueled dick waving going on over this is...eh, whatever. It's a thing. Obama and Putin need to sit down and have a cup of stfu. That goes double for the peanut gallery over in the middle east.

Would the Russian people back Putin if he decided to be too much of an arse about supporting a fellow dictator?

Seems a lot of Russians are already pissed at losing democracy... I can see that number increasing if Putin puts Russia into a hole.

A better phrase would be "against an equally matched power".

Rome was at almost continual war with someone to expand to its eventual size.

The Norse (if you consider them a nation) did very well for themselves for several generations of prolonged war.

Sparta was built on war. All male citizens of the right age being in active full time military. Not technically at war full time... but actively surpressing the people who were their slaves and did all the work for them.

Last time I was anywhere near Russia there was a "AA" like movement. It was called "Beer for Sobriety". The logic followed, if we are can drink vodka all day if we switch to beer we should be more sober. They had really great shirts, but none in my size.

If I'm a guessing man I would say BOTH sides have used WMD at some point in the last two years of conflict.... most likely sarin. Most have amounted to the relatively small casualties unlike the August one in Damascus but still....for the Obama admin to misled the public into thinking Assad is the ONLY bad guy here thus justifying a war based on humanitarian 'good v evil'  causes is intellectually dishonest at best.
