I think that would cause a schism among catholics.

Anyways, I hear this guy is a righteous dude.

The Vatican is gonna be royally pissed.  A friendly Pope, and one who cares?  Damn.

Good Morning!

Is this the Pope-Tart thread?

The pope does a lot of work with single mothers.  Just helping them get their start of course.

2013-09-06 07:13:55 AM
This guy is setting all sorts of bad precedents for the Popes to follow him. He seems to actually care for the people and not just the church/priesthood.

Those will be big shoes to follow. I hope he makes it long enough to bring about some change that will actually stick.

If you've lost hope and cannot cope, don't mope, don't reach for a rope, don't be a dope, write to the Pope.

That was a "Weeds" plot line.

2013-09-06 07:23:39 AM
Take him up on it, lady, then hit the Vatican up for child support.

2013-09-06 07:23:41 AM
We'll see how cool he is when he gets the bill for child support.

2013-09-06 07:25:46 AM
He just trying to recruit.

He's simply doing it better than some of the old guard.

The Vatican will shortly release a statement clarifying that the mother is still going to hell.

You know what other mother claimed the head of the church as the father of her child.

2013-09-06 07:44:05 AM
This guy is doing the whole Pope thing right. He has made me smile a few times and I'm an atheist.

2013-09-06 07:44:08 AM
I love how Pope Francis doesn't just stay in his ivory (marble?) tower. He seems to take his calling to serve
very seriously. I think it is very telling that he didn't berate the woman for adultery, pre-marital sex or having
a child out of wedlock. Instead, he was compassionate and reassuring.

WTF Indeed: It's funny to see people find out what the Jesuits are all about.

Not Catholic, though I did go to a Jesuit university for undergrad.

And while I was bummed that he wasn't one of the more... liberal Jesuits, I do have to remind myself that jesuits are pretty liberal compared to the catholic church anyways.

It has been *hysterical* to watch some of the more entrenched parts of the vatican *totally flipping out* about some of his statements (ESPECIALLY the one regarding atheists.)

2013-09-06 07:55:24 AM
I'd still be catholic if the whole lot of them were more like this guy.

I wonder when the Papacy changed from the Borgia era popes (where debauchery was not unheard of, and sometimes encouraged) to the "holier-than Swiss cheese" popes where everything was off-limits out of "common decency and morality"

His statement regarding atheists is one of my favorites. I'm Catholic, and it may be blasphemous, but I've always wondered
if God was really so egotistical and insecure that if you didn't scream it from the rooftops that he was the greatest thing since
Cheetos and Monster that he was going to send you straight to hell.

If you believe that God is a loving god, and if you believe that He gave us free will, then that also includes the freedom NOT
to believe in Him. I think that God is more concerned about us being decent to one another than He is about whether or not
we are paying lip service.

Confirmed atheist here, but I'll say this -- Francis walks the walk when it comes to shepherding his flock. Inasmuch as the point of the church is to provide succor to it's members, he's doing a marvelous job of modeling that as it's titular head (if only more Christians were like him!). Good for him, for comforting a random woman who is in what she sees as a bad situation and reached out to him in her distress.

For some reason, I have the weirdest boner...

I seriously doubt that he thought she needed a prostitute at this time.

That's a nice first impact.
If he wants to make one that would help her more immediately, he should offer to phone the father of the child, and if necessary the WIFE of the father of the child.  I bet the "cad" might reconsider his position on child support (and discretion).

Given how this Pope is, I would not be shocked if he paid.
