I'm going to have to watch this one soon, because I have a feeling that once it's done spoilers are going to be very hard to avoid.

I have a hard time thinking it'll be better than The Wire or The West Wing, but there's always a chance.

It's not.

It's really damned good, and you should absolutely watch it, but it's not better than the Wire or the first 4 seasons of the West Wing

Almost no unwatchable overly-glib dialog, actually.  Breaking Bad is pretty darn good.

I must say I love Breaking Bad, but this is a pretty stupid record to print based on one website's analysis of reviews.

I'll reserve judgement until I see how they end it.

Until then that distinction belongs to The Wire.

I liked The Wire seasons 1-2 and 4-5. Season 3 I had to slog through as the Carcetti rise to power was dull and nothing really happened on the police side.

I love all five seasons of Breaking Bad though. So for me:

1. Breaking Bad
2. The Wire

The Wire ended five years about and I still hear about it almost every day.  I have no doubts that Breaking Bad is good but maybe they should wait.

/My vote is for Samurai Jack or King of the Hill

Giancarlo Esposito has surprising range. He's played everything from a Sesame Street character, to the guy who got his Jordans farked up by the white guy on the bike in Do the Right Thing (In fact he's in most Spike Lee movies somewhere).

He plays a remarkably similar character to Gus in a little known 90's movie called Fresh - a crack dealer with the same kind of quiet guarded seriousness with underlying menace.

He played a proto-version of Omar on an episode of NYPD Blue that David Simon wrote.

NYPD Blue was both ground breaking and masterfully done, but doesn't hold up great over time. Same with The Shield.

For me BB is my favorite of all time.  I know so many say The Wire, and I think it's a great show, I just feel BB was better...except when I have friends who are watching it for the first time, I always have to tell them you have to get through season 1, as it can kind of have you waiting around for the story to develop.

As an aside to this, I've been watching Mad Men.  I've been told by many people it's this uber amazing show.  And (remember IMO) It's...ok.  Well, that's a bit harsh...it has good writing and good acting, so it's a good show.  It's just not as great as people make it out to be.  It's like watching a live action version of a Sims game in the 60s...not a whole lot happens.  "Sally made you a macaroni necklace" and then Don drinks scotch...then credits.

To each their own I guess.  I won't deny it had some really funny episodes (Hank's racist dog and the one where he becomes a pimp come to mind), but I don't know that I would call it the greatest.

Seems like every good show has a honeymoon period where it's considered the best show of all time.  I think you need to wait at least a year after the show ends to make that determination.

/I remember when something similar was said about Scrubs

The Wire is too derivative to deserve a spot in my top 5. It's the most retreaded set up in the history of American TV and film, just with better writing. You could argue that Breaking Bad is cops vs drug dealers too, but Breaking Bad is about Walter White's descent into darkness, and at no point has the feel of an American cop show, or any show before it for that matter.
