(Daily Mail)   Swarms of crickets invade Oklahoma, eat each other and smell 'like rotted meat'. Of course, the rotted meat smell may just be coming from the McDonald's they're swarming over in the picture   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 47

Back in the old days, there's an easy way to deal with plagues of locusts (or crickets, in this case) - eat them.

To be fair, it is Oklahoma so the sweet release of death could be a motivation for them. Kind of a pseudo murder pact

Get those goddamned cicada killers to eat 'em

Crickets? I'll bet there will be a lot of well-received jokes in this thread.

We ate 'em in Thailand.  They fry them up in a wok and usually coat them in a sauce or a chili powder.  Doesn't really taste like anything except a spicy potato chip shaped like a bug.

Those cannibal crickets just need a conscience to steer them on a less destructive path.

We're also overrun with crickets here in Mission Hills, KS. Also the Emerald Ash Beetle. I've had to put out bags and bags of poison.

Experts say this year's onslaught will likely last longer than usual and the state must still endure around 8 more weeks of the chirping plague.

Jiminy!

My daughter works in a science centre and feeds crickets to the lizards and spiders in the live exhibits. She was quite disturbed recently when she discovered one of the feeder crickets noshing on an injured companion.

Apparently carnivorism is just Nature, but cannibalism is gross!!

I found two in my third floor office. I have no idea how they got there.

Sidewalks are littered with cricket corpses. I would have figured for a bird buffet, but no.

just last week was listening to NPR when a guest stated that nearly everywhere else eats bugs and as a source of cheap protein we should begin to consume them as well.
Guest was pointing out the unsustainability of the cattle market and what not and, using bugs as a viable alternative.
Dry 'em grind 'em up and put 'em in yer flapjacks flour.
Beats the hell out of Seitan.  Which should have the warning "Do Not Eat" on it.

Made me think of Soylent Yellow.

this looks almost as bad as the annual juggalo swarm in southern Illinois... .not sure if they eat each other or not... they might...also smell bad...

41 years here and i have to say they are really bad.  The grasshoppers (or locusts as the educated folks from the city call them) are really bad as well.  Heck if I didn't have to work all the damn time, I would already have me a can full of them going down to the lake for some fishing.

/always loved to just throw them in and watch the perch go apeshiat.

Yeah, my pepper plants have been devoured by grasshoppers.  I also had an aphid problem for a while.  On the plus side, I had a couple of praying mantises help me out with that.

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Anyone who has owned reptiles and had to buy crickets in bulk knows that smell.  It really is one of the most vile and repulsive smells around...no joke.

I dated a girl whose uncle ran a cricket farm (to sell to pet stores).  Tears would well up in her eyes while recounting the couple times she had to stay there and could not escape the smell.

30 years in Oklahoma.  I've only seen it swarm like this twice before.  To get into work I have to walk across a carpet of living and dead crickets.  They smell awful and crunch underfoot.  Employer instructed the cleaning staff to sweep off the bugs from around the doorways.  It's better now but still ... ewwwww!!!

love the praying mantises and walking sticks and although Mrs. Funk has a huge arachnophobia I will not touch those little black spiders with the white dots (love to watch them pounce on their helpless victims)
