Because sending harrassing emails threatening the family and breaking into the company truck is acceptable practice in the free market?

Melisa shared just a few of the messages she has received of late:
One message with the subject line "racist maggots" read, "People like you will burn in HELL, you racist pigs."Another read, "Your homophobic rants will not be forgotten and you will go out of business. This is the 21st century, a**holes."And another: "Do everyone a favor and fall off a cliff."One individual made it very personal: "Honey it would take a lot to make your ugly a** look good! You are ugly inside and out!"And finally: "Maybe your god will send you some cat food to eat when you are living on the street?"

2013-09-05 11:24:03 AM
and why didn't they just go to a different bakery instead of making a stick about and running this place out of business?

It wasn't the nasty emails that caused them to shut down. It's that no one wanted to do business with them anymore due to their reputation. FTFA:

"Just the whole being effected big time in our wedding industry part of the business - the vendors not referring us any more," Melissa said when asked how the incident impacted her business. "We coasted it through the summer to see how it would be. We had quite a few wedding cakes that we had booked and people cancelled. The referrals that we would get, none of those came in."

Of course, I am a divorce lawyer, so there's that.

Precisely.

"Yeah, I have lost something I worked really hard for and lots of years put into, but I know that really doesn't matter. My eternal home is what matters. I'm not going to bring all that with me...I'm happy and okay and I'm being provided for."

"I'm being provided for."  Save us Gloria Steinem, the woman actually said she's okay with losing everything over her own behavior, because "I'm provided for."

Jesus, what a vapid coont.

Why not just bake a cake for the nice (paying) couple instead of throwing a hissy fit and getting yourself shut down?

Bigots ought to be put under a microscope and made to feel uncomfortable. Because they're bigots, and fark them, that's why.

ManateeGag: and why didn't they just go to a different bakery instead of making a stick about and running this place out of business?

They didn't.  They noted it, other people made a big deal of it, it went viral, the word got out that this baker doesn't do work for couples of which she doesn't approve (for whatever reason), and the people who refer business to her decided not to refer to her any more.  Wedding planners can recommend whomever they please.  Break a social rule (and possibly a law) like this, and there are consequences.  That's how the free market works.

In Ye Olden Dayes, the baker would have been put out of business faster for refusing to bake a cake for a lawful wedding f which she didn't approve (for whatever reason) - the whole village would have known instantly, and would have started baking at home instead of buying at the bakery.  The shop might even have been torched, depending on its location.  It actually took longer for her to go under now than it would have a couple hundred years ago.

ginandbacon: If you have a public business, you really can't expect to get away with discriminating against a class of people and not have most people decide to take their business elsewhere.

It was their choice and they have every right to make that choice..or should have every right to do so. As P.J. O'Rourke said, " There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences."

This story exemplifies that quote.

Sure.  But nobody has the freedom to avoid the consequences of their assholishness.  And everyone else has the freedom to tell them that they're assholes and treat them accordingly.

While I'm no fan of Sweetie Cakes by Melissa--nor Melissa herself and her execution of her belief system--I'm fine with the market "speaking" by people just not buying her shiat (or buying her cakes) while avoiding all the harassment that she seems to have had slung at her.

People are assholes.  I'd say it's "ironic" that people treat an asshole by being assholes themselves, but it's more sad than anything else.

The good news is that there will be some equipment for sale on the cheap, and a freed up space for another business to move in.

Injecting politics into your business is rarely a good thing. You alienate customers, you generate the wrong kind of press, and that is the risk you take for opening your yap. To do so, to tell some customers that they're not welcome? That's practically suicidal.

Restaurants and other hospitality/cooking/baking/catering businesses fail all the time. MOST fail in their first few years. Some of it has to do with a failure to put together a solid business plan. Some a failure to manage efficiently and respond to market changes. I stopped doing consultancies because I really disliked, in a majority of cases, having to tell folks that their best option was to close down their dream business, and sell fast. Most folks don't really want to admit that they need help, and often call far too late to do anything to stem the hemmoraghing. In this case, our Dear Brave Pioneers felt that if they just stick to their guns, that folks would rally to them. They were mistaken, because they thought that folks loved the stench of homophobia and discrimination. This is a hard lesson.

When you are courting folks' business, betting that others will share your politics and religion is a bad bet. Your job depends on courting folks of all stripes, and if you decide you don't need folks' money, or their business, you are pissing on not just those customers, but potential customers, and risk pissing off your current base. Adding politics to any form of hospitality based business is a bad bet, and there IS such a thing as bad publicity. They're certainly free to say what they want, and refuse business, but that doesn't mean that they're free of the consequences.

This is how Rand and Ron Paul say it should work. The govt should not require businesses to accommodate then if they are too offensive the public will go elsewhere.

and in America they have the right.   I personally feel they should have baked the cake and feel once you open a store front you need to be ready to pretty much serve every customer.  I don't agree with the backlash against a small family owned business from people who have nothing to do with said business.  There is way too much manufactored outrage happening in this country and it no longer is limited to the media or politicians.

with that being said. If the gay couple went in an the owners were rude and demeaning then a little of the outrage is justified and the opposite is true if the owners explained nicely about their position and the customer created the outrage.
