It's called playing the percentages.

The Tigers have pulled off two successful suicide squeezes in the past two weeks.  Nobody was put out in either one.  You just have to execute.

Gotta get the bat on the ball that was just terrible execution

I think both of those were Iglesias who can really run, but was not called either time with 2 outs. I mean if the hitter is slumping and can bunt and run well? Hard for this after the fact to not sound like a horrible idea. That video does not help either.

Hit and run? Yes, sure. Even better, go Earl Weaver and call for the run-and-hit.

But don't call a suicide squeeze. Not unless you're an idiot.

At least they didn't clog up the bases.

Dusty is a terrible manager who has benefitted from having good teams

I'm no fan of DB but I'm okay with this. It's late, a game like this this late in the season is a huge stress on the bullpen, and there's drinking to be done.  Shoot the wad and see what happens.

/plus it gives the Nats a better chance of catching the Reds
//but I'm being totally objective here, people

I'll take that a step further and postulate that no manager has squandered more talent than Dusty has.

Oh, Dusty Baker.  that makes a lot more sense now.

2013-09-05 09:56:54 AM
Dusty is the man!  Love that guy.  He's got a great baseball mind.  Hang 'em out to dry, Dusty.

Go Cardinals.

2013-09-05 09:59:36 AM
Hoping your batter gets a hit probably wouldn't work either. Even the best batters fail two thirds of the time.

If the Nats steal the second wild card spot from the Reds, games like this are going to be the reason why.

The Reds have a very easy Sept, though.  3 games each against the Cubs, Brewers, Astros and Mets.  So that's 12 of their remaining games right there that should be pretty easy.

I do recall him sending Neiffi Perez to try to bunt with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th down by a couple runs. He loved that guy, and kept using a roster spot on him - yet clearly has no idea how to that kind of players (limited) talents and actually play small ball (when he's not overtly badmouthing it).

2013-09-05 10:16:54 AM
Very bad strategy. Clearly Baker should have called for Heisey to hit a double in that situation.

You're right, of course. There's just that sliver of possibility, especially because Dusty Baker. But they'd promptly lose the WC playoff.

Well, a suicide squeeze with 2 outs is beyond retarded. All the other team has to do is throw the runner out at first and no run. If it were 0 or 1 out it'd be a legit idea, but with 2 outs? That's real dumb

It's Dusty.  For basically the entire first half he had the worst OBP guy in the lineup batting second.

2013-09-05 11:19:36 AM
Maybe he had to go take a dump?  Or had an engagement he needed to get to?  Besides, with baseball having a 457 game regular season schedule, what's one loss?

This is true. This is a good, valid baseball point. Trying too hard to win an extra game may burn out a team's bullpen and cost them more games down the road. It might be more beneficial to risk it all one way or the other, just get the hell off the field and move on.

I guarantee you that kind of thought never crossed Dusty's mind.

2013-09-05 12:01:26 PM
The only stupid thing here is that he didn't wait for a two-strike count.
It was Heisey?   In Dusty's defense, Heisy is a left fielder with only 3 stolen bases this year.
.239/.279/.433, 46 SO / 8 walks
Why was this guy batting in the first place?

Good to know the people at DS never watched the game. No bunt was called, Heisey was just a moron. Choo didn't start running until he thought Heisey made contact on the bunt. Trying to say Dusty called for this shows how stupid everyone in here is.

Is there like, evidence for this?  Cause "Heisey decided to bunt on his own with 2 out" seems pretty unlikely.

I switched off the Angels game last night in the third inning to watch a movie, I bet it was Scioscia repeating the 2008 ALDS nonsense where Aybar whiffed on a bunt, snuffing out a rally [checks link] Well, I'll be damned, it wasn't Scioscia or the Angels.

As a Reds/Bengals fan for the last 30 years, there has never been a player or coach from either team that I've disliked more than Dusty Baker.  James Harrison is in the conversation, but still nowhere near Dusty - he's the worst.

Man, that was a crazy game. Lots of weird freaky/fluky plays in that game. Reds scored a run on a wild pitch, which hardly ever happens with Molina behind the plate. Beltran scored from second on a weird error by Votto, then Allan Craig made an out when he sprained his foot rounding first on the same play. Reds had the bases loaded with one out in the first and couldn't get a run in. Then from like the 7th inning to the 13th nobody did anything except swing and miss at fastballs from an unbelievable number of power arms. J.J. Hoover was throwing mid 90s and was the slowest guy on the mound in that stretch. The Billy Hamilton thing, where Dusty was trying to give the Cards an out and they wouldn't take it, instead Cozart hits the tying single and Mujica blows the save. The Choo/Heisey thing, which was after the Reds' 100 RBI 2nd place hitter (who had already homered in the game) lays down a sacrifice bunt. Matt Adams hits 800' of home runs in extra innings - first time the Cards had ever had one guy hit 2 homers in extras in one game.

Oh, and on top of all of that, there's less than 25K people in the park for a game between two division rivals in the playoff hunt. What the hell, Cincy?

No logic with two outs. None. That was just a dumb play. The hitter didn't act like he had just failed on a suicide squeeze. He just acted like he missed a bunt. Choo made the call to run it seems.

Have the Cards been selling out games lately?  I saw a game recently that was rather empty (although I think it was a Tuesday).

A lot of people here are getting tired of subsidizing millionaires playing for billionaires. Or maybe I'm projecting a little. I'm perfectly happy watching high school/small college athletics. just got word that my son is travelling with the varsity for his DIII season opener, and I'm very psyched about that.
