Grimes?

That was my first thought, too.

Hey, you okay, Grimey?

2013-09-05 09:58:38 AM
Good ol' Grimey.

2013-09-05 09:58:39 AM
Poor choice of words.  And though I do think they should chastised for it, it's really low on the sexism scale they've calibrated for themselves.

What annoys me more is that McConnell's people probably thought it was clever.

in fairness to them, it is pretty clever of them.

not to normal people, but to them it was totally clever

The funniest part about the KY race is all the liberals that spent two months saying the crazy movie star was the only candidate that could defeat Turtle, and now they have to eat crow.

2013-09-05 10:04:29 AM
As a card-carrying gender warrior, I'm having a hard time ginning up outrage over this.

If anything, it just highlights how outmoded and gendered our time-honored political cliches are.

The statements to the press read like the garment-rending of the Palin camp over "lipstick on a pig" circa 2008.

Outrageous Muff: all the liberals that spent two months saying the crazy movie star was the only candidate that could defeat Turtle, and now they have to eat crow.

So...who? Who are these people?

Is 'empty pantsuit" okay, or will Hillary fans pull a hissy?

Call her an empty suit: "That's sexist"
Call her an empty dress: That's sexist".

Masterful troll.

That is one of the worst attempts at deflection I've ever seen.  And we swim in it here on Fark.

As a feminist I think this comment is unimaginative and not really insulting. The fact that he bothered to make it just reaffirms what a loser he is, at best.

I disagree. It is blatant sexism, not to be outraged over, but understood in context of an ongoing hatred towards women. Women (and men who love women) should see that the pattern is consistent. When you recognize that you must realize that the misogynists will never vote in a woman's interest.

Wanna point out one where she was explicitly stated by liberals to be the only candidate that could defeat him? Maybe even just one comment? You are very sure of your assertion, so it should be easy to back up.

I dunno....we call men an "empty suit" all the time. Classically, men wear suits and women wear dresses. This is a stupid comment, but I wouldn't really call it sexist.

Women wear suits in a executive professional setting, even if it is a dress suit or a pant suit. This was a dog whistle to remind people she is a woman and therefore inferior. I know this kind of stuff gets subtle. They have being doing this for years to suggest why you should vote your bigotries. Remember you can't say N*gger, but you can certainly say welfare queen.

How is that sexist at all, assuming she does actually wear dresses occasionally?  Even if she doesn't...that's like a 1 on the Abner Scale of Sexistness.

I'm accused by True Conservatives of being the libbiest lib to ever lib liberalism and I have no problem with this.

If anything, it's not sexist, IT'S POLITICALLY CORRECT.  And for a True Real American Conservative, that's an even greater sin then sexism.

Also, does she even wear dresses, or is she more a pants suit type of guy?

I think the bigger issue is how she was described:

"Alison Lundergan Grimes seems incapable of articulating her own thoughts, and faced with questions, either directly parrots the talking points handed to her by [Sen.] Chuck Schumer or she babbles incoherently and stares blankly into the camera as though she's a freshman in high school struggling to remember the CliffsNotes after forgetting to read her homework assignment," Brad Dayspring, the group's communications director, told  The Hill.

Someone's scared they're gonna lose to a girl.

Yeah, that's kind of an odd angle of attack to run with.  If she were a political newcomer and you wanted to tag her with that as a preconception before the campaigns get underway, then yeah.  But she's a sitting SecState with overall positive impressions; it's not as if she and the voters haven't met already.

If they were going to break out the branding tactics, it should have been done ages ago.

I hate the GOP but this is a non-issue.  Maybe "empty pantsuit" would have been a better phrase, but I'm going to go ahead and assume that she's worn a dress to at least one public appearance while she's been running.

In any case, the comment is clearly about the GOP's belief that she an insubstantial candidate and any sexist tilt to the comment is simply about making a feminine version of the masculine "empty suit".

But why did they feel the need to use the "feminine version"?  She's not running for feminine Senator.

Not that this really bothers me.  I think it just emphasizes the image of Repubs as totally out of touch with the 21st century.  And the 20th, for that matter.

I remember quite a few liberals, myself included, saying that Ashley's stance on the coal-mining industry would make her unelectable.
I also remember quite a few liberals, myself included, saying that since Ashley hadn't moved back to Kentucky to establish residency or declared her candidacy any talk of her running was meaningless speculation.
