Yes, this is pickem not suicide/eliminator. You can find that game in one of the football threads from last night near the end of it. Or search 'farkistan' on espns eliminator challenge. Its the one w/o a password

OK, I'm in as the1xaks, since four letter usernames are too complicated for ESPN. Here's my long-winded and probably horrible breakdown for week one, feel free to skip if you already don't like my humor. And, yes, my picks are as noted below.

THU 830pm

BAL @ DEN

Setting aside the whole 'Super Bowl winners opening on the road' debacle for a minute, this is one whale of a matchup. Yes, the Ravens have lost a lot of players, and playing at Denver is tough. Boldin being gone and injuries at TE are going to take a huge bite out of their offensive production. However, Wacco Flacco is still an under-rated passer and they have a stout oline. Plus, Ray Rice is *money*.

Denver has Peyton Manning AND Wes Welker. They may be having issues early in the year on D with suspensions and missed players (really? a FAX machine farkup? you're not even trying any more, are you?), and Champ Bailey is gettin' awful old back there.

I'm gonna give a small nod to the Ravens here and pick them to win. Not by much, though.

Vegas says ...what? Denver by 7? Wow. OK then.

SUN 12PM

NE @ BUF

So long as Brady is under center and Belicheat is on the sidelines, you cannot count this franchise out. Despite the horrific drafting at DB over the years, the offense and speshul teams keep bailing them out. I don't see this year as much different, although the much-vaunted offense is going to be its lowest point in recent memory, quite possibly the lowest point of the Hoodie Era. They've just lost so many skill players it will be tough even for Brady to make up for it.

And...Buffalo. Just wow. I'm actually hoping that Marrone and the new GM have success long-term. I was a big fan of the Bills back in the day and would LOVE to be able to pencil them in as a playoff team on a regular basis again. But Stevie and CJ 'getting the ball till he pukes' aren't enough. They need that defense to start playing like it is paid. I'm also concerned about the Byrd situation and the locker room effect. Mario needs to put out BIG time this year.

New England should stomp them fairly soundly, but it's game one for the Bills, so lets see how they react. Vegas says New England by 9 or 10.

SEA @ CAR

Russell Wilson is the most pimpworthy player in the NFL right now. His picture should be placed next to the textbook definitions of 'suave' and quite possibly 'debonaire'. Even with the suspensions early in the year of some BIG names (Bruce, Richard, etc) that defense is still monstrous, and the offense can't wait to get Percy in the fold. Pick your poison: stop Lynch (no small feat in and of itself) and let Wilson throw/run? Or contain Wilson and let Lynch run rampant? Good luck with that.

Carolina. Yeek. On one hand, a decent oline and Cam Newton. If the kid can finish growing the fark UP he could be a much better QB. We started to see signs of this last year, but he needs to keep it up. How old is Steve Smith 1.0 now? For all the money they're paying the RB position, they sure don't seem to be producing much. On the other side of the ball you have the tackling machine that is Luke K, and a voracious defense that needs to step it up a couple notches. Rivera is coaching for his job this year and I'm pretty sure he knows it. Sub .500 probably means a cleaning of the house come February (or maybe sooner).

Seadderall should thump them fairly handily. Vegas agrees, the line is 3.5 to 4ish.

CIN @ CHI

Cincy is the bungles no more. That defense is absolutely nasty, and they'll not only kick you in the junk, they'll tell you about it beforehand AND get up in your face about it after. Dalton has matured nicely, and if he can stay fearless and a little consistent, he has the weapons to put a lot points up. I think they'll take the division this year by a fair amount of games. Law Firm is still one of my favorite RBs.

Aaaand Chicago. An unknown in Trestman, where a 10 win coach was shiatcanned. A retirement of a first-ballot HoFer on the defense. Which of the Jekyl/Hyde Brandon Marshall will show up? Will Sulky Jay or Smilin' Jay show up? Will Forte be 60% of the offense again? Will the seive-like oline actually protect the QB for a change? So many questions. At least they're letting Hester go back to what he does best. Pro tip to the 31 other teams: Don't kick it to him.

I'll take the Cats by...a touchdown. They're ball-hawks on the back end in Chicago, which might lead to some lost scoring opportunities down the stretch for Cinci. Vegas says even money, as of 0730am Thursday.

MIA @ CLE

Cleveland's defense is deceptively good. Its the offense they need to work on. They've gotten a solid line assembled and if Richardson can stay healthy, they should take some pressure off of the pseudo-youngster at the helm. They need help at WR in a BAD way though, or TE. Hell, both would be nice.

Miami is trending up, is the best way to put it. That asshead Ireland is still in the office, though, so I'm not sure what the ceiling for Philbin is. That said, Joe Knows Offenses, and Sherman/Tannehill is a good combo. The addition of Wallace is a game-changer, although for better or worse I'm not sure. It'll be really, really good or really, really bad, that I think I can say. Their defense still gets pressure and they're decent against the run, but they need shoring up on a leaky back end.

Vegas says the home team Browns by 1.5.

MIN @ DET

The Minnesota AllenPetersons. If it weren't for these two guys and a couple of decent 'liners and 'backers, I'd pick  many division 3 college teams to beat them. I'm still hoping AP gets his 2500, provided he loses both games to my Packers in trade.

The Loins. They don't have an issue scoring points, even when Pettigrew occasionally forgets how to catch. I don't need to talk about Megatron. The oline got better, and the addition of Reggie Bush is *huge* for them. Yea, the ass-end of the defense is still pretty bad, but the dline often makes up for it.

I'll take Detroit here, comfortably. Vegas agrees, with the line at 5ish.

OAK @ IND

On one hand, I have a soft spot for Flynn. First, to sit behind Rodgers, then get stuck trying to outplay the Pimpmeister, and now Pryor? Ye gods, talk about snakebit. BUT at the same time, you need to put up. That's your JOB. If you can't, you aren't going to be around long. The Raiders are starting to come around...next year will get them out from under the worst of Zombie Al's cap hell from stupid contracts. Reggie knows the office side of football, and will guide them well. But this year? I don't think they're in the Clowney Hunt, but it'll be a near thing.

The Colts, on the other hand, almost HAVE to regress a little bit. To go from Suck-for-Luck to the playoffs was astonishing. Luck will be the starter for the next 15 years if he stays healthy, and Reggie Wayne is pretty much ageless at this point. If they could generate a wee bit more pass rush they'd be in a good spot. I'll pencil them in for #2 in the division, probably in the conversation for a wild card come December.

I think its safe to assume an Indy W here. Vegas says anywhere from 7 to 10 points.

KC @ JAX

6 Pro-bowlers, the addition of Andy Reid AND Alex Smiff? I won't say they're in the playoff hunt this year, but I'd say they're a strong candidate for .500 and rising easily. They have a curiously good roster and a lot of talent. Reid sucks at clock management, yea, but he's having a good time cuaching like he didn't have in the last 5 years in Philly, and it shows.

Jags. Ye gods. I'll drop it going forward, but I have to say: The helmets suck. Badly. Horribly. I'd rather see the Steelers throwback unis than those helmets. Atrocious. The rest of the logo and uni changes I'm OK with, but the two-tone thing is ass on a stick. To say nothing about QB situation that is even WORSE than the helmets. Really, Mr. Khan...just burn it down and start over, cause outside of MJD you have a meat case with a broken AC unit in August...the entire roster stinks in ways that'll make a garbage truck driver barf. Really. Its a dumpster fire. Let it go.

The Chefs by....well, lots. Vegas says 4, which is a pretty big WTF to me.

ATL @ NO

Rawr. This is gonna be a fight. I don't need to talk much about Atlanta's offense, and the addition of the man-beast that is Steven jackson is only going to make it better. This may be Tony G's last run, and they're all in for it.If the defense can get their collective asses in gear they have a shot at it. Matt Ryan is overhyped but capable.

Last year was *bad* for New Orleans. There's a lot of fire, drive, and frankly just pissed-offedness in this locker room right now. I would not want to bet against this team. The defense *has* to be better than last year, and Drew Brees + Sproles + Graham is cash money.

I forsee a track meet..."Whomever has the ball last, wins" kind of thing. Gun to my head, I'd say home team wins both times and they split this season. Vegas is going hands-off right now, calling it even money/N.O. by 3.

TB @ NYJ

Tampa. Such an up/down squad. I'm really starting to sour on Shiano, to be honest, but lets hold off judgement until the end of this year for that. This team will go as far as Freeman takes them, and that's really it. They've got some talent scattered about the roster that isn't named Revis, believe it or not. But enough to be playoff contenders? I have doubt.

And I'm not even going to get started on the J E S T. Aside from the dline, the entire roster is pretty much liquid shiat. I really don't know if Rexy even makes it to the end of the year as bad as this is looking. I can't make up my mind on Idzik yet, he needs at least one if not two more seasons to un-fark what Tannenbum left him. But Woody needs to step the fark back and stay out of the football decisions.

The Pewter Pirates should win this, but it'll be a sloppy, ugly mess I think. Vegas agrees, with the line at 4.

TEN @ PIT

Rapey Ben is getting along with Todd Haley now? I'm pretty sure thats one of the signs of the impending apocalypse, isn't it? Anyhow, the defense is getting slower and older every year and frankly, the oline needs help. The receiving corps are decimated by age and injuries, and so is the running game. They're on the way down, and will likely finish around .500 either just ahead of or just behind Cleveland in the division rankings. I doubt the Wild Card will be a conversation to have in December, either.

We'll see how this whole Locker experiment pans out. The line looks better, and CJ0K can still run the ball. Swiss-Army-TE Walker will bail them out of a lot of busted plays if you can get him the ball. The defense...well, let's see how that turns out.

Vegas says the Stiller by about 6. While I think that's overly generous, they are playing at home. I'll go with Pit to win I guess. Not feeling strongly about it though.

SUN 430PM

GB @ SF

I'm not gonna lie, SF is a whopper of a team. They're stacked all the way around and have arguably the best oline in football. Aldon Smith is over-rated though, look at his production when JUSTIN Smith is out or hurt and he's between 'meh' and 'good'. When Justin is on his game, he's the best one on the defense, and that's saying something.

At the venerable candlestick, there's two important questions. One, can the one-more-try Dom Capers D contain/control the Niners' offense? I don't think so. I really just don't see it happening. The Pack has the best depth at Dline they've had in years, and the LB corps is fast (don't look at Hawk though) and likes to hit. But containing all that offense is a tall order. If any offense can light up the Niner's defense, it would be one of the Great QBs (Brees, Manning the Elder, A-Rod) with the ability and leeway to improvise at the line. Track meet game with a similar score to the playoffs last year I fear. I'll bet Mason Crosby misses at least two kicks in this game and crumbles again.

Though I'm wishing for a Packers ass-whuppin' of the Niners, the realist in me picking objectively realizes that in SF right now, the Niners will probably win by at least a touchdown. Regardless, I'm guessing this will be one hella fun game to watch. Too bad we'll get Captain Concussion and Shoepisser in the booth again. *sigh* Vegas agrees, with the host Niners up by around 4.5ish.

ARI @ STL

The Rams went 4-1-1 against their division last year. Recall, if you will, that's against the Niners and Seadderall as well. Their defense is under-rated by a LOT and the speshul teams is really pretty sick. Getting some weapons for Bradford is a plus, assuming the leaky oline can keep him upright.

Arizona is going to be better than some folks think this year. They still have Larry F and, while he's not a OMGALLSTAR, Carson Palmer is head and shoulders above anything else they've had at the position in a while. Keeping the turnovers to a minimum and moving the chains, along with a stingy defense? If the oline would learn how to farking block they'd have a shot at .500 or better.

I'll take the Rams here, but it'll be a fight. Vegas agrees a bit, with the Rams at around 4.5.

SUN 830PM

NYG @ DAL

As we talked about earlier this week, I give up on trying to pick the NFC East. Any one of the four teams therein could win 10 games or lose 10 games, and I would not be even a little surprised. While I don't think they'll be more than one  double-digit winning team, there's a lot of talent scattered about this division.

They're playing in Dallas, and while Eli and the G-Men have fared well there in the past, I think this year Dallas has their number, at least this week.

But, I have doubts about injuries and that leaky Cowboys oline. They need to have Tony healthy and upright to have a shot at the postseason...cracked ribs Romo means time off in January for this squad. Vegas says the Cowboys by 3.5 right now.

MON 710PM

goddamn post too long...

MON 710PM

PHI @ WAS

A Monday night doubleheader. Between the Chip Kelley experiment and Bobby Three-sticks Frankenknee, I have no bloody idea how this is gonna turn out. I'll pick the 'Skins to win cause they're at home and were legit players in the post-season last year, even if I can't stand that rat-faced shiathead at the helm. Wait, that could be Snyder too, now that I think about it...two for one!

Philly is totally anyone's guess at this point. They were really, really bad last year and I have zero confidence in Vick staying healthy. They might almost be better off cutting their losses and starting over with Foles at this point. Still, they have some offensive talent scattered about, so we'll see how badly the defense shiats the bed.

Vegas says the Skins by around 4. I'm good with that.

MON 1020PM

HOU @ SD

Houston is still trending up. Getting Cushing back healthy and with a long-term deal is huge, and I think JJ Watt scares me more than any defensive player since Bruce Smith or maybe John Randle. Add in an actual number 2 receiver to take some pressure off of Andre? Damn, son. If Shaub stays heal...actually, fark it, I'm pretty sure if Foster stays healthy is is a 10-12 win team and they take the division. Tate is a nice change of pace back to give him some rest, too.

The Bolts, sadly, are circling the bowl. Rivers is good when the team is good. When he's the best they have, you have issues. Its good they cleaned out the front office last year, it was overdue. But this year will be in the septic tank and they need to clean out the locker room to follow suit and allow the next generation to come in.

The Texans by a lot. No, I mean a LOT. Several scores or more. Vegas disagrees somewhat, saying HOU by about 5.
