When I was a teenager a friend's younger brother decided to take a shotgun and rob a liquor store.  One that was 1/4 mile away.  That he'd been going to all his life.  And he didn't wear a mask.

Cops were waiting at his house when he got home, off he went for a couple years.

And how did they not catch the robber, there had to be a trail of urine and feces following him right out the door.

I think the lesson is more, if you stay in the military for 30 years you should acquire some rank or your retirement will be so low that you'll be working at a liquor store until social security kicks in.

Robbers don't usually use their guns to shoot people. They use them to intimidate their victims. A simple robbery turning into an homicide is the last thing they want.

The robber is lucky the clerk didn't shoot back, but the he was never intent on doing anything with that gun other than brandishing it.

Clearly the robber wasn't prepared to use his weapon and was just shocked that the cashier didn't just cower in fear while telling him to take the money.

Full facial exposure while committing a robbery/murder is probably going to be first day of class. Second day it probably going to be standing out of reach of the person you're robbing.

When I was in college, a tall athletic kid who used to be a basketball star in my inner city catholic high school held up a small corner store. He got the money and made it about 10 steps down the street before the owner shot him several times in the back. He never went home again.

My dad is a retired Colonel with 29 years.  He works as a teacher's aide in the mornings, and part time at a gun store afternoons and evenings because he realized that he was bored sitting around the house at 51, not because he needed the money.  And the guy in the video might be the owner of the store, or just enjoys getting free/discounted booze.

Did it ever occur to any of you people that he might have a good pension but works part time just to have something to do?  Christ, my dad is 67, he just retired, and he doesn't know what to do with himself.  He's taking computer classes at the community college just to have something to do, but I suspect he's going to start working at his golf course pretty soon.

Once again for people who don't know:
*If you are close enough to touch someone with your gun....you are too Goddamn close!*

The robber being so close is what allowed the clerk to bat away his firearm and draw his own. But then *he* was too close so the robber should have been able to bat the clerks gun away and pull his back up. But then the robber would be too close and then you end up with this:
Gun fight!

Nothing wrong with the G27, or Glocks in general.  They kick like hell compared to some other handguns, but it's small (the G27) and is my conceal weapon, and incredibly low maintenance.  Plus, the price was right.

Well, that's true.  Low enough caliber, and maybe there won't be an exit wound at all.  It just bounces around inside the skull until it pops out an eye or something.

The robber was probably drunk. Looks like he was keeping the guy fairly distracted but when he actually pulled his gun, he had it in the guys face really fast.

If you watch what happened...   The clerk saw that the perp was pulling a gun, and made a move with his left hand to prevent him from lifting it.  THEN he pulled his own gun.

Looking at it that way, he was not slow on the draw at all.  He effectively disarmed the dude before arming himself.

It's called the military. They pay you to get in shape and learn how to shoot guns. Pretty sweet deal for the motivated criminal.

Law Enforcement is even sweeter. Don't get sent overseas, don't sleep in a barracks, free reign to commit crimes and bully civilians = on the job training. Plus, free hookers and drugs from shaking down dealers. Win/win!

They're nice, but I'm not sure they really deserve the "it's the only one you'll ever need" reputation it enjoys.  My sister carried one when she was LEO but I think that was partially because it fit her small hands.  Although I think most of the department where she worked carried them as well. When I got out of the Military, as an ex military policeman, I went back to college. You would be surprised at how many kids tried to mug me stumbling back from a bar late at night, in an alleyway.
I got a nice collection of buck knives, mostly the 110 model out of it. A shoebox full of them.

Working in a liquor would be a great retirement job. Sounds like he works the night weekend shifts for a mom and pop. No stocking, just stand there taking money until a robber comes in. I'm a former MP and have thought about doing this, too. Strip bar security would be good as well. You need something that isn't full time and steady - it's the whole point of retirement. One thing being an MP has over other forms of LE is it gives you experience dealing with people in the act of making stupid choices, rather than just writing reports after the fact. He's the perfect man for that job.

It's cool that he reacted fast and embarrassed the robber, but here's what's likely to happen next.

Robber sees himself being humiliated on TV. Waits outside of liquor store for Rambo clerk to get off his shift. This time, he just pulls the trigger without getting close, after taking careful aim from behind a dumpster or some other hiding spot. Rambo clerk ends up shot in the back, or the back of the head.

I never put it past people who would commit a crime in the first place to come back and try to finish the job later if they're thwarted, and if they're at all capable of learning, they will be a lot more dangerous the second time. And a lot more pissed off if they are now wanted and made to look a fool.

More likely the guy tossed his gun and is waiting for the cops to pick him up when someone id's him. I guaranty that if that clerk spent 30 years as an MP, he's had more than his share of death threats. It was part of his job; dealing with drunk, pissed off soldiers with combat experience. People acting alone don't act on revenge as much as you might think, unless they are psychopaths.  Psychopaths don't rob liquor stores.

He looked like a reluctant robber... otherwise he would've gone in gun drawn gangster style like you see in most convenient store holdups. That's the most dangerous kind because most times these thugs are teenagers and probably too young to truly think through the consequences of their actions.

2013-09-05 12:01:01 PM
If you check out the video, you'll see the guy attempt to pull the gun up. Before he could, the clerk's left hand shot out to push the guys hand down. While using his left hand to control he smoothly pulled his own weapon and kept it trained the whole time. Check the video. The clerk was working to control the perp's primary arm less than a second after he figure out what was going down. The pistol was used to further that control - no need to rush the draw. Play close attention to when the clerk shifted left from behind the register - this is when the action really started. I wouldn't call this slow.

Or he didn't want to use a gun at all, so when he got an unexpected "fark the hell off" he decided to escalate by showing he's armed. Then the clerk escalated right back, and went farther, faster.

There is a good chance that you may never need to have a gun, but if you ever do you will need it right now. There probably won't be time to go buy one and learn how it works.

I don't think he "let" him do anything.  The clerk was actually pretty lucky that the would-be robber wasn't actually intent on using his gun.  The clerk never had control of the robbers gun, or even the arm that was holding it AND he fumbled while reaching for his own gun.  If the robber actually wanted to shoot somebody, we had time (and the freedom) to raise the weapon and squeeze off a round.  After the would-be robber walked away, they were probably both crapping their pants.  That clerk had to know he wasn't in control until the last second when his gun was in the other guys face.

/if you're going to carry a weapon for self defense, farking practice un-holstering it so it becomes a muscle memory.
//get control over your assailants weapon first!  If they don't have access to their weapon, then you don't need one, if you have one, then it's an unfair fight in your favor.  Which is the only fight I would ever want to get into.

Good for the clerk. I don't think I would have tried to detain him either because when folks get desperate things tend to get crazy and out of control.

Would be nice to think the guy would rethink his actions while cleaning out the load in his pants but I doubt it. Glad no one was hurt or killed.

Or, you know, if he doesn't have mentally unbalanced wild west fantasies he will:

1) Realize that they caught his full face on camera
2) Realize that he's suspect #1 if the clerk ends up dead

Most criminals just need/want money. They're going to find ways to take it as easily and safely as possible. That does not include shooting people out of spite. Going down on armed robbery is a hell of a lot better than going down on first degree murder.

Most people who carry *are* trained. Many of them (myself included) seek out additional training above and beyond the minimum required for a carry license.

In none of the states where CCW exists (all of them now) has the 'wild west' gunfights broke out, as most anti-firearm people screamed about. Indeed, CCW may not prevent much crime, but it sure as hell doesn't increase it.

I wasn't necessarily referring to concealed carriers. I was referring to Joe Average who buys a gun, doesn't get training (which isn't required), and then does something obscenely stupid that results in someone getting accidentally or unnecessarily shot.

CSB: I was in the hospital waiting room while my mother got a pain block, and two women seated nearby were discussing the guns they'd just purchased. One had been to the range, but I was actually shocked to hear both of them admit that they couldn't tell whether or not their firearm was loaded or if the safety was on. Their main concern? "If someone were to break in, how do I know it's loaded, and would I be able to load it in time? And how do I make sure the safety isn't on?" Obviously, the first thought that went through my head was that she'd be more likely to shoot herself before she shot anyone breaking into her home.
