I kind of feel him on the food stamp one. The amount of people I know who use it as just extra income is kind of disgusting. I can't remember how many times somebody has whipped out their card and asked me to exchange food for beer and cigarettes.

Most laws made regarding assistance are meant to shame and punish the poor anyway. Whoever is doing this is just following the governments lead.

The Franklin quote is a popular one among conservatives, who have mistakenly attributed it to pretty much every Founding Father. Its actual provenance, much like the fliers in Portland, is unknown.

I work at a convenience store where we started taking EBT food stamps last year. The number of people who come in and buy overpriced pints of ice cream, coffee drinks, candy, energy drinks, pop, etc. etc. that use EBT for them is ridiculous. I've maybe seen a handful of people use it to buy bread, eggs, milk, things of that kind. Our milk and bread is actually very reasonably priced, too.

I'm not suggesting that. It would be nicer though if we could screen it better. The amount of abuse I have seen personally is disgusting.

This. I good starting point on fixing the program would be to put more restrictions on purchases. You shouldn't be buying steaks with an EBT card.

He's biatched about food stamps and disability assistance. I say someone in the neighborhood should publish a list of people who use the postal service, roads, schools, transport, and water, then the people can determine who should and should not be using services provided by the government.

This guy is a massive ponce, and he likely believes that every service provided by the government should be privatized--from prisons to the postal service. Because free market!!!!!11!!!11!!!! And no company would artificially inflated prices on basic public services to shore up their bottom line.

When I was working at a quick shop, the scam was to buy a 16-oz pop or some other item for $1.05, and get 95c real change back. Two or three of these and yourself had a pack of cigs. This was back in the days when they still gave out Monopoly money stamps rather than a card of some kind.

One lady working there would make them leave the store for 5 minutes and then come back in before she would ring up another pop. God that pissed them off.

Think of it as caring for the mentally ill, since we shut down all the state institutions that used to do that (and keep them quite happy I might add. The places were practically country clubs.)

His issues aside, comparing the post office to food stamps is disingenuous at best. Roads benefit everybody, food stamps is a redistribution of wealth. They are hardly the same thing.

Guy's like this don't get it. You don't have to be living in abject poverty to get food stamps or disability benefits. The whole point of these programs is to keep people out of abject poverty. That the people who receive these benefits seem to be doing ok is a testament to the successes of the programs.

i always thought the voting money quote was a misquote of plato's republic or something.

however, i read plato's republic and do not remember ever reading that quote. i just remember someone telling me that plato said that in the republic.

all i really remember about plato's republic was the inevitable downfall of a democracy through liberalization of the vote.  starts off, great, you get some philosopher king, then more people can vote, and more people means more stupid people, and they idolize things like military prowess, then more people vote and they idolize things like business prowess, then more people vote and they idolize a charming leader, and then you have a tyrant.

because any charming politician is necessarily tyrannical.  you can't be a good person and be a charming politician, because you will tell the truth.  you can't be an intelligent person and be a charming politician, because the people who vote will be too stupid to understand you.  so, to be electable, you must be a good liar and stupid.

The 7-11 in the ghetto near my buddy's house always has people buying cases of soda. They had to put up a sign that said: "Food items that have been microwaved prior to purchase CANNOT be purchased with EBT. Please purchase the item before cooking."

I understand the need for some people to be on Food Stamps, but there are some places that barely even investigate the cases before handing them out... which I can also understand. If you have a child starving, telling them to come back in 6-8 weeks once processing is done is just wrong.

However, you should be able to buy things like toothpaste and other hygiene products. Within reason of course. No one should be allowed to buy high end shampoo from a salon, but you should be able to purchase basics.

Beer and smokes nourish the soul.

If EBT could be used for whatever the hell, there'd be a lot less fraud in the program.

I only know four people who use it and they all sell their cards, mostly to buy alcohol and cigarettes.

2013-09-04 05:16:02 PM
EBT is fine and necessary, but it really pisses me off when one person is using 4 different EBT cards to purchase groceries. Also I have seen people using EBT cards fly into a rage when something rings up not EBT eligible, they stand their and berate the poor cashier who probably has a smaller grocery budget than the EBT recipient.

This right here.

Disability exists so you don't go broke and accrue debt while you heal from a major injury.

/your paycheck is going into it, take advantage of it if you need it.

No it doesn't.  They're using it as supplemental income, as you said.  If so, they'd just use their real income for cigs and beer, the EBT for food.  You're making shiat up.

Well, we all know we should set public policy by what makes an anonymous internet poster feel less icky.

Not that the mere idea of giving free stuff to those who might need it would ever be icky, oh no. "Taxes are theft" and all, but only a little bit thefty when certain requirements are met by the truly needy

Step 2: Millions more become eligible for food stamps due to Step 1

Step 3: Demonize those using food stamps to do things like eat every day

USA! USA!
