(Opposing Views)   The FBI has increased its surveillance of Syrians inside the US. How did this process fare when they tried it in the past? "The FBI's interviews with Iraqi-Americans in 2003 were largely unproductive"   (opposingviews.com) divider line 23

I'm surprised they haven't bugged Jamie Farr's phone yet.

Don't be.  I'm pretty sure he's Lebanese.  As I think is about half of Salma Hayek:

I kind of remember some outrage back in the aughties about surveillance of American minorities.  Something, something, Bush, fascist, something.

So that should prevent us from rounding them up and putting them in remote camps?

This time, it's  sure to work.

I know a Syrian. He was almost killed in a protest, and told not to return to Syria "until there has been a change in government."

I don't think we need to worry about him.

Can we just put them all in internment camps until this thing blows over?

Why would this help? This isn't a terrorism situation. There is no network. There are no cells or anything. Well, the rebels are backed by the MB, and THEY are pretty al qaeda-ey, but we would be fighting FOR them if we attacked the syrian government. We would be handing them power.

Pretty much every American of middle eastern descent.  The hue and cry around here was pretty loud, and for good reason.  Probable cause, 4th amendment, that sort of stuff.

Sure they got enough room in there?
they started it when I was 8 and wrote to the DOD with my plans for a cyclotron.

In fairness, last time around they did produce a cottage industry of Iraqi ex-pats willing to fabricate ill-specified conspiracy stories in return for money or political favors. So there's that.

So IraqI-Americans had no actionable intelligence on Iraq having an active WMD program or an alliance with Al Qaida.

I can't imagine why.

Didn't they learn anything from 1941 to 1945? They were better watching the coast for germans out for a swim than confining every Nisei they could to a camp.

Surveillance? Iraqi refugees? Keeping track of all the potential Syrian US haters? Yes, yes. That works out like a Smart Power Plan.

Hindsight is always more rewarding than evaluating the present with slanted eyes.
