They should have made a duplicate sign for the judge.

He's undoubtedly too much of an idiot to feel shame.

Hell, most Farkers do that for free right here in the comments section.

Are judges allowed to just make up punishments for people or are they required to follow legal guidelines?

Depends on the charge. Why give this guy free room and board for a month or so when public shaming works just as well? And in most places the perp can opt out and just do his time in jail.

Public shaming may be better than sending him to a school for criminals.

My idiot sign comes more in the way of many subtle nuances like condiment stains on my shirt, unzipped fly, misspelled posts, a constant look of confusion of most goings on around me, etc.

But I wear that sh*t with pride.

He probably didnt "order" it as much as gave him the option to do this or be sentenced normally.

So the judge is apparently calling schoolyard names. Very professional.

Well at least ONE of those roadside signholders will finally be honest.

Oh yeah. He seems like such a threat to our militarized police.

Shaming punishments depend, for effectiveness, on shared values.

No shared values, no shame, no punishment.

Judge Pinkey Carr (!) has done this kind of thing before.

I guess the Judge is a big fan of "Die Hard with a Vengeance".

Forehead tattoo I guess was ruled out due to his hat size.

Really, Mods? Really? You picked this headline over mine?

If only there was some third option. But as we all know, nature limits our choice in all matters to a binary A/B selection. And since there are only two choices B must be defined as the opposite of A even if the two are largely identical or completely unrelated.

/ Malaria may be better than beating children to death

As a site admin, I just looked at the headline you submitted. And based on your sophomoric level of "humor," I'm glad the mods greened this headline over yours.

Things like these are generally structured as "you can go to jail or..." and the "or" part can then be essentially anything the court can think of (unless the action or inaction required by the alternative sentence itself would be illegal). So you don't have to participate in whatever crazy-ass scheme the judge dreams up, but there's also no requirement that the jail term and the alternative action be in any way equitable, or that the alternative sentence be any more effective/better for society/better for the convict/etc.

I'm so going to get a vacation for that, aren't I?

Come on, it's somewhat funny....

The judge did not make him do anything.  He offered an alternative sentence in lieu of the traditional sentence.  Would you rather be embarrassed for a period of time or lose a couple days or weeks?  He probably still has to pay his fines but it knocks out the custody segment. Alternative sentencing is fairly common at least regarding work release, doing weekends so you have the week to work, picking up trash on the roadside instead of jail.  Wearing a shaming sign is a little out of normal, but for misdemeanors there is a lot of latitude given to a judge.

You're right. I must be reminded that Fark humor tops out at the frosh level.

There is a third option, but beheading seems rather extreme.

This punishment is embarrassing for the judge.

He missed out on his last court appearance because he didn't have a ride??? Seriously?  Why didn't he think to call 911 again with the same trick? INSTANT ride, right on down there!
