I know it sounds like bullshiat but I heard the same sound in Gambrills Maryland last year.  It was accompanied by a very intense low frequency vibration that literally made the air pressure feel like it was modulating very rapidly.  The only way I can describe it was while I was hearing the sound, it was like I was inside a subwoofer speaker but the sound definitely was coming from the sky.

I stopped an looked all around there was nothing close within 100 yards but the post office.  The sound pressure was very high and I've never heard anything like it in my life.  I felt it in my body as much as I heard it.

My brother insists I was hoaxed but I'm an engineer and for the life of me I cannot figure out how that could have been possible based on the shear energy of the sound and how far way I was from anything that could have made it.  It was clearly coming from directly overhead but I saw nothing.

The only thing I can figure is that it's caused by some weird atmospheric phenomenon or possibly some interaction of the atmosphere and a solar wind or flare.  .

When I was a kid in southern CA we had the same thing in the mornings, and it would vibrate and make that same eerie sound. As a kid...I honestly thought it was the radio waves going through the house, that's what I made sense of it. My mother could hear it most of the time as well, and she didn't know what it was. My dad left for work early and never (AFAIK) heard it. We'd hear it...I want to say twice a month, my recollection is a lot more often than that, but ...child memory, impossible to say.

I would love to know what it was though. And if it was of a frequency that perhaps older people can't hear or something.

That's not sensational, that's not ALIENS or any such thing, so, let's not comment on that and instead continue to propagate the viral mystery...

Here's what I know about hearing: I can hear not only the Mosquito (a buzzing sound that only teenagers supposedly can hear), I can hear much, much higher pitches than that. As in, the sound of an older TV being turned on. Some people have a  huge range. It's entirely possible that some people--TFA says two percent of people--have a low range, and thus hear something that makes a lot of low-level noise, but exists on the same range as the Mosquito.

/Can't listen since I don't have earbuds, but hopefully my range is high-pitched enough so I can't hear the Hum

Except that the rest of the town said the sound happened, and the mayor even explained it away, acknowledging it existed.

This one seems to be a real sound being recorded, not a faked video. Whether or not the source of the sound is a grinder echoing across the whole town, or some weird spooky unknown thing is another question. Nobody at TFA or in the town have questioned or challenged the video, though, and in fact have backed it up.

Lady Indica: truchaos: I know it sounds like bullshiat but I heard the same sound in Gambrills Maryland last year.

The only thing I can figure is that it's caused by some weird atmospheric phenomenon or possibly some interaction of the atmosphere and a solar wind or flare.  .

/ Not the submitter.

No one would have believed in the first years of the twenty-first century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

So there are these big machines called road graders, and they're commonly called 'graders'.  They have giant, curved blades that are used to smooth out, or grade, the soil.  Sometimes they're used to plow streets as well, though they're less good at that.  Since they go through dirt and rocks all the time, they tend to get nicked, dulled, and slightly warped.  Here they're saying that a city employee was using a grinder, as in a tool designed to grind metal, to hone & repair the damaged blade of an aforementioned road grader.

\But I also hope you were trolling rather than seriously confused about this point.

But the Michigan one... Yeah, that's kinda what I heard last year.

That's a malfunctioning HT transformer somewhere. Unmistakable noise.

Which is a farking movie sound effect, and this video is a hoax. You idiot.

People make fake UFO videos too, in a poor attempt to discredit videos no one can explain.

Really? That's your explanation for UFO fakery? That it's an attempt to discredit the "real" UFOs?

/I would really love to live in a world as interesting as the world you live in.

You are thinking UFO = aliens. Rational people with a basic concept of the English language understand it to be unidentified flying object. Go take a bubble bath crab arse

zombosis: The Mayor of Terrace claims its just a city worker grinding a grader-blade for roadwork. Apparently they were going to do it again just to prove it, but so far no media has covered that mundane explanation. I'm not entirely surprised- if it IS such a simple thing, well... That's not sensational, that's not ALIENS or any such thing, so, let's not comment on that and instead continue to propagate the viral mystery...

I never once mentioned aliens. Wow.

Go somewhere not heavily populated and the noises you hear. During weekdays in the mountains we would hear rarely very large booms. Some people think it is military craft (possible, there is a cold war era military base nearby still used that has top secret requirements to get in) breaking the sound barrier or releasing chaff pods. Others think it might be geological stress being released in an area with shallow fault lines.

I don't know, but if you ever hear them you will be pretty much wondering wtf was that too.

I frequently hear a low frequency hum-- at home and at the summer house.

At home, I attribute it to our built-in refrigerator (compressor) on the other side of the wall from the bedroom.... not to mention the bedroom sits above the basement room where the freezer is.... not to mention we have several fluorescent lights-- at least one of which we leave on downstairs for the kids-- and the ballasts or whatever they are make a hum.

The summer house is on an island, where cruise ships pass, as well as industrial ships in the oil industry.... not to mention that there is a massive radar installation just behind the house, and you hear the motor that turns the 'dish' running non-stop.  I hate that radar dish.  Plus we are on an island-- and on the west side, less than a km away, there are ocean noises.

There simply is a lot of industrial noise in modern life.

Wife can't seem to hear anything.... must be from living with me all this time.

LavenderWolf: TL;DR: If you actually heard a big booming noise, I'd put $50 on there being documentation on it. If you see a video titled "STRANGE SOUNDS HEARD ALL OVER CANADA" it's a farking fake.

LavenderWolf: Someone created the sounds in a studio. Stop being gullible.

3.  get laid

Hard to do any of that when laid up with an injury. But I'll take that advice under consideration.

Apparently, it does:

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/01/21/windsor-hum-detroit-border-f or eign-affairs_n_2522395.html

OTTAWA - The federal government is committing $60,000 to help two universities investigate a mysterious humming vibration in Windsor, Ont.

The Windsor Hum has been the subject of much speculation for almost two years in the industrial city, which sits on the Detroit River across the U.S. border from the Motor City.

A seismographic study by Natural Resources Canada has identified Zug Island on the U.S. side of the river as the likely source of the noise pollution, but talks between Canadian and American authorities have failed to resolve the matter.

Flab: DubtodaIll: Sounds like a train stopping or something.  God forbid you actually investigate by moving towards the sound instead of just watching some trees.   That's the best thing about these hum vids (and most paranormal vids in general) is that people never actually go investigate and try to document their investigation.  If I ever came across something genuinely weird I would absolutely stop everything I was doing and investigate as it could be proof of something that we've never actually gotten proof of ever before.  Which is pretty important.  It's almost as if all these kinds of videos are just desperate cries for attention and escapism from the boring ass world we live in most days...

In her defense, she said it came from the sky.  Kinda hard to follow the sound, unless you have wings.

Maybe she was afraid of being shot at by aliens.

If you came across something that your faculties genuinely told you was an alien invasion would you not go find the closest human and confirm your suspicions?  At least go to other people in the area that would possibly be experiencing the same thing and ask them what they thought?  Like say you see a mothership coming down from the sky, and you're the first one to see it, would you not immediately start screaming "Hey! That's a mothership right??"  and then start informing everyone you can reach?  That's the problem I've got with paranormal videos.  During the making of the videos they don't seem interested in sharing it with others during the experience, then immediately post the video online.

The Red State sound had more of a horn quality which was likely altered and amplified, Last I heard Kevin Smith has refused to say how he did it.

This sound has more of a metal grinding quality. As if someone were grinding down some kind of big blade.

PsiChick: downstairs: PsiChick: I can hear much, much higher pitches than that. As in, the sound of an older TV being turned on.

I very much remember that sound.  I doubt I could hear it now (and have no 1970's TV to test on)... but yeah.

Try turning on your modern one and sitting a bit closer. It's quieter, but the sound is still there.

/Turn on music and it drowns it out, though
//I love music

That 15KHz screech is very specific to CRT and to older 480p TVs. Nothing higher resolution or LCD can create it, unfortunately, except a very well crafted pair of speakers.

/Would be the only one to reach up and turn off a blank TV in college.

PsiChick: Some people have a huge range. It's entirely possible that some people--TFA says two percent of people--have a low range, and thus hear something that makes a lot of low-level noise, but exists on the same range as the Mosquito.

The difference in this case is that it would be EVERYWHERE. ELF and ULF is so common that normal people can actually feel it when they live near military bases, and it travels ten to 100 times further than normal sound. Anyone who could actually hear that would be driven mad or insensitate in no time.
