theknuckler_33: I just scanned TFA, but it looks like no one in congress actually suggested that this was something that was being considered. I think this is just an academic exercise on the part of the author since, if I'm not mistaken, Obama doesn't need congressional approval to launch an attack on Syria. If they tried to pull this, he could just say "nope" and send the missiles anyway.

Which, I should mention, would be a political propaganda victory for Obama. Even if you are against intervention in Syria (which I am), he could rightly point out that the GOP were in favor of the strikes or they would not have put them on the table *OR* they were willing to vote in favor of military attacks they were against just to score a political victory at home. I don't think either of those narratives will play too well.

What I'd like to see the president do is say "We'll defund Obamacare if you agree to fully fund Obamacare." Then watch their little pointy heads explode.

As for Syria, Obama asked for Congressional approval, didn't he? That means he won't get it. The Democrats will be able to run ads of bloody Syrian children dying in their parents' arms with the motto "The Democrats wanted to save this child's life but your representative voted for her to die."

enry: Every now and then Obama comes out as a master troller, and this is another case.

Congress has to act but I doubt the GOP can do anything unified other than put Reagan on the $10,000 bill. Obama wants to act but he's got time and wants to get the evidence in, so he passed the buck to them. The GOP is going to go crazy between their bloodlust for dead brown people and their hatred of anything Obama wants to do.

That is a very cynical view of the president.

As a Teapublican, I am fond of this brand. Before I discovered it, I'd spend hours peeling potatoes and mixing the butter, milk, salt, and other sprinkles before finally having a proper place to lodge my penis. Not only is it heat 'n serve, but comes complete with a handy bowl so I don't have to dirty my own kitchenware. I've loved a lot of chickens in my time, but nothing beats the warming embrace of sticking your dick in these Country Crock mashed potatoes.

About 80% of the year, roughly evenly distributed.

Apparently at Walmart in Mexico they were doing just that until their courts put a stop to it in 2008 (according to all knowing Wiki). Based on the entry it looks like it's illegal in a state-by-state basis in the US - but doesn't mention any federal laws or acts against it (or if it's in fact illegal in all 50 states, or just Wisconsin (and others?) per the entry).

Cyclometh: qorkfiend: Does a declaration of war (or force use authorization, as I'm sure it will be called) require the President's signature to take effect?

There's a difference between declaring war and authorizing the use of force, although the line is much more blurred since the end of WWII.

No, the President does not have to sign a formal declaration of war. The power to declare war is solely vested in Congress.

However, Congress is not contemplating a declaration of war, formal or otherwise. While many (myself included) think it should be necessary to declare war to use force against other countries except in exigent circumstances, the US has not followed that line of reasoning for a very long time.

The President, by kicking it over to Congress, is clearly expecting some sort of affirmative or negative response as a result, which would inevitably take the form of a Congressional resolution. My point is that poison pills won't work because the pills would require the force of law (i.e. the President's signature) whereas the use of force authorization doesn't.

nekom: They've tried how many dozen times already?  Give it up, guys, you lost this one.

mediablitz: The only way to keep America safe is to take away health coverage from millions of people.

This is what I don't get, is this the face the GOP wants to show the nation?  We don't WANT you poor people to have health coverage.  Is that really what they're going with?  Because let me tell you, I'm well off and have great health insurance through my employer, and I'm quite lucky because I know a LOT of people who struggle to make ends meet.  Not wanting them to have health insurance, well it just comes off as mean.

I've heard them dance around that, but it's usually just a couple of sentences and then they change the subject very, very quickly. Their talking point doesn't go very far; it usually starts with straight up denial: "Of COURSE we want better health care coverage for all" followed by choose-your-lie, and then "Next question."

I don't think anyone has a good handle on how much Obama really wants to do this.

I just mean that I think if it came down to it, Obama would pick PPACA over a Congressional vote in favor of striking Syria. He's already won PPACA, and the public's lukewarm at best on Syria.

The best the GOP gets out of turning down the Syria request is making Obama look bad ("He said 'red line', but he couldn't do shiat 'cuz we wouldn't let him! Haw haw!").

Here's how this will almost certainly play out in Congress.

The Senate will pass, over a filibuster, a basic resolution approving some form of intervention in Syria.

The Teapublicans (thanks dickfreckle) in the House will approve an amendment to the Senate resolution that fully repeals ObamaCare. They will then vote against the combined resolution because it doesn't also repeal Dodd-Frank and cut food stamps by $100 billion over the next five years. The hawkish Democrats will unanimously vote against this combined resolution as well since they don't want ObamaCare to go away. The authorization to intervene in Syria will fail catastrophically.

The day after this resolution fails, the entire Northeastern corridor will be hit with sarin gas, leading to tens of thousands of deaths and millions of injuries. Obama will then unilaterally declare war on the Middle East and nuke the region into oblivion.

Punch and pie will be served at the after-party.
