Thank God for exotic dancers capable of flashing brilliance beyond sequined pasties!  I will have to remember the phrases "the degenerate magic of San Francisco" and "dimly lit Dionysian hellscape."

I dropped by last night with a friend who was a former performer there. There was a line to get in. Not worth it. She just said "hi" to a few co-workers and then we went to The Cinch on Polk Street for drinks.

BTW, it's closing due to a huge rent increase caused by a turf war with other clubs in the area.

Meh. They're all skanky.

To many of us, dancers, patrons, and support staff alike, the closing of the Lusty Lady means not just the demise of a singular San Francisco institution, but another nail in the coffin of the Bay Area's Bohemian class-a triumph of capitalism over native culture.

You did good, capitalism.

Unionized, huh?  The older performers must have been members of SAG.

I'm calling shenanigans on the article.    "I'd often punch out on break, change into my street clothes, race down the steep slope of Kearney Street, cross at the intersection Columbus Avenue right in front of City Lights Books, and bomb into Winchell's Donuts."  Going down Kearney from there will not end up in front of City Lights (which is at the top) nor is there a Winchell's there - it's a Happy Doughnuts, always has been.

Yeah, it's been 20 years since Lily Braindrop was on the bill at the Lusty, so I'm not surprised her memory's a little hazy. (I'm not surprised her editor didn't have time to look it up on a map, either.)

Both of you fail on how the street is spelled. At least she remembered which way to spell the fried dough.

But what's your timeframe for "always has been"? I remember why she thought it was a Winchell's: it appears as one in Star Trek IV. I'd be surprised if they redressed it for the movie.

(In 1970, there was no donut shop there, according to the Yellow Pages. I'd have to talk to one of my SF specialists to see who has a 1988 YP for comparison.)

And the reason the unionized strip club didn't have enough profits stashed away to meet the rent increase other clubs in the area did is because...?

What rent increase? It's not like the landlord who owns every other strip club in San Francisco pays rent to himself.

FTFA:   Customers weren't allowed to dictate the show in any way, but that didn't stop of some them from pantomiming stage direction through the glass. A "whoop de doo" finger spiraling in the air meant "turn around." Fingers together and flapping out like fish fins meant "spread 'em." Poor lambs, to each motioned command, the answer was the same: No.

And they're surprised they failed to keep business and make rent?

Treat customers like crap and then expect them to return to give you more money... Sure, that will work.
