Someone out there is getting ready to defend the cab-driver and include the phrase "The free market at work!".

That's right, rip off the Chinese. They don't hold grudges, and won't scream all over their message boards about how the us is a land of lawless bandits.

Otoh, turnabout is fair play.

Maybe somebody will start a gofundme account for this kid to replace his money?

Just learned about this existing the other day, actually.  A bandmate of mine is using it to buy new keyboards since some jackasses stole his keyboard AND his gear bag (we're guessing the gear bag showed up at the nearest metal recycling center the next day).  It's a good site in the right hands....

Don't.  While this kind of scam is despicable, this kid is in college.  He should be old enough to know better.  It's not like he has a mental handicap or is old and senile.

This kid probably has well off parents. Most chinese students who go to a major university while barely speaking the language are fairly well off financially.

I remember the first time I flew into Champaign. I remember we started to descend, and I looked out the window, and I thought, "Something must be wrong with the plane. There's nothing down there."
We landed, and sure enough, there was nothing there, and it was about 95 degrees with 1432% humidity, and I know exactly the resignation that Chinese kid must have felt when he handed over all his money: "Oh, well. They probably don't take dollars in hell anyway."

I just got back from three years in China. I'd already kinda forgotten what stuff is supposed to cost here in the US.

This kid (and College aged Chinese are still kids, they're typically less worldly than an 8th grader here) probably had no clue.

It'd be more to show how kind Americans can be.

The guy that did this had better hope the cops find him before the airport cab cartel does. They're a bit protective of their turf.

Foreign students are required to prove that they can pay their tuition up front.
He's not poor.

It would be a useless gesture. The Chinese have no concept of 'kindness' so they would never be able to recognize it when it was being shown to them.

This. Look up the tuition rate for an out of state graduate student at your local university.
That Chinese TA you had for Calculus has some pretty well off parents.

You were lucky.  I'd flown from Lubbock, TX to DFW to ORD and we were landing in Champaign.  I looked out the window and thought, "Oh, Hell no!  They sent me back to Lubbock!"  (Basically, all the crops with their circular irrigation looked the same as where I'd just left.)

Thought I'd ended up in a Twilight Zone episode.

/CSB, I know.

That's nothing. I flew back home from Las Vegas a few years ago. As we were approaching the airport, my thought was "God dammit! The flight went perfectly! I'm in Indiana!"

The Chinese students at K-State are notoriously obnoxious in their car-buying (and driving). New Porsches, loads of new Audis and Volkswagens . . . all beat to shiat in about a semester. There was one complete asshole who cruised continuously in a yellow Cayenne. He had a retinue of bimbos. They were regular at the store where I worked. Complete assholes.

/So glad I don't have to live or work in that shiathole ever again.

Most of the Chinese kids at my university wore solid gold Rolexes, or whatever fancy brand they chose, were dressed in designer clothes and bought their round of drinks with hundred dollar bills pulled from their very well stuffed designer money clips.

I'm not saying the kid deserved to be scammed or extorted and I hope they catch the asshole who did this, but there's a decent chance he's not hurting for money.

He shoulda just bought a used car for that kinda money. Bet next time he'll know better. Also, dude that ripped him off is wrong, but this kid needs to know that there are people like that out there. Heaven help him if an American gold-digger gets her hooks into him. This'll seem cheap.
