He takes the snap and then puts the ball on the ground like he's going to snap it again...why?  do they think that helps it work?

It didn't fool that one guy, he just whiffed on the tackle.

It's a tale on the fumbleruski, which was so effective it's banned. So yeah it works.

But it's meant to look like the "fake" is him resnaping it to the guy behind him. At field level since he's behind the o-line it can be very effective.

The first guy through saw through the whole thing, but missed his chance.

FTFY.  Seriously, BC, you got fooled by a fake punt by a FCS team.  Only a month & a half until hockey & basketball start up.

I live in Boston and can't stand BC. Too bad they won the game. They're so overrated, like Notre Dame.

Yep. If he had actually passed it backwards, once the ball touched the ground, it would be considered a fumble and since it was 4th down no one other than the guy who fumbled it can advance it. So actually tossing it that way to run the fake punt to the right would be highly risky; if the toss is botched you're screwed.

After he whiffs, though, it looks like he got up and followed the rest of the team after the wrong guy.

Exactly - he let up because he thought the guy had already handed the ball off.
This was a "fake fake punt" actually... eh?

That's not what it looks like to me.  He tried to make the tackle, whiffed, and then got up and half-heartedly pursued the ball carrier up the field at the left hash mark.  But he's a good 15 yards behind, so he really doesn't make much of an effort.  He never looks over to the decoy that is running up the right side of the field.  I think he totally sniffed out the fake, he just missed the tackle.

Way to waste a great play in the first quarter of your first game.

The coach should be fired.

The guy who took the snap put the ball back on the ground before he ran. Why wasn't the play blown dead?

barefoot in the head: The guy who took the snap put the ball back on the ground before he ran. Why wasn't the play blown dead?

The ball was in possession and not a passed ball.  If it slipped from his fingers or bounced to him from the first hike, it would've been a fumble.  A passed ball cannot touch the ground, but a missed hiked ball, dropped ball or possessed ball is live.

But in college you're down even if another player doesn't touch you. So touching the ball to the ground is different than a knee or elbow?

He explained it. This is an event that happens on a snap, where touching the ground is OK as long as it remains in possession.

Imagine that the centre snaps the ball past the QB to a deep back. He starts running and, after a 10 year again, he is tackled. According to the description above, it does not matter that the ball is down, since he is still in possession and the ball has not been passed. He is therefore entitled to get back up and run.

DeltaPunch: But in college you're down even if another player doesn't touch you. So touching the ball to the ground is different than a knee or elbow?

Yes. You're allowed to touch your hands or the football (or, obviously, your feet) to the ground. The moment some other body part, like your knee or elbow or butt, touches the ground, the play is dead.

This is an FCS team playing a BCS (Div 1) team.  They're punching way out of their weight class, so why not try ato take a shot like this now and maybe spark a miracle upset?   Looks like the other teams they play this year won't be much of a challenge anyway.

Not only do they have a team, but it's pretty good too.  They won the National Championship in 2009.

I think of them as a basketball school.  Never expected that they had a football team.  I learned something new today.

Not that he was on that championship team, but Villanova is where Howie Long went to college.
