The All-Powerful Atheismo: MaudlinMutantMollusk: In his defense, he certainly hasn't been the dumbest person to run for vice-president

If you're referring to Ryan, as much as I dislike that chode gobbler, Quayle was about a thousand light years dumber.

How quickly we forget...

/and there's always more where that came from when it comes to VP candidates

FloydA: SixPaperJoint: What did we do to deserve such terrible trolls?

I'm really starting to miss internet dentistry and black cats.

What ever happened to Forever?

I agree the quality of trolls has declined dramatically.  People used to put a little effort into their alts.

To be fair, the Entertainment tab isn't really the place you go to find the best and brightest of the current generation of trolls.

Aw, man, leave old Admiral Stockdale alone. And he's light years ahead of Sarah Palin.

THIS!

He should have laughed it off, and said, "That's how I'd spell it, but the card says it's 'potatoe.'" (Show card to TV cameras and continue) "Maybe I should review my spelling skills."

I think he/she is referring to a certain female that ran for vp

Fano: whither_apophis: A bunch of people sitting around biatching how a show from 1992 seems dated? That blog sucks.

They laughed at Dan Quayle for saying we need fewer single moms and then Hillary is recognized as a wise sage for saying "it takes a village to raise a child."

Here's the difference. Paraphrased to evoke what the other side heard.

Quayle (gender: male): "The problem with our country is too many women choosing to be single mothers."

Clinton (gender: female): "Groups and communities should be involved in raising children."

One comment (at worst) advocated commune thinking and socialism, the other comment blamed the Children of Eve for the sins of driving away absent fathers and ruining the morals of the nation.

As if single mothers enjoy shouldering the burden of parenthood alone. Only an asshole makes that argument.

Waldo Pepper: Obama would have hung the teachers out to dry and made sure he showed the card to the media.

Yeah, but the long form?

Potatoe was correct for most of the 20th century. Here is an example from the New York Times:
Two disappointments came in the seafood category. A dish called halibut peperonata was described by our captain as spicy, but in fact the timidly seasoned fillet came out with a latticework of roasted peppers combined with spinach and a bland carrot-and-potatoe puree.

I wrote a paper on this issue for my voting behavior and public opinion class. That was the fall semester of 1992, so it was a tad more topical then.

You wrote a paper on My Mother The Car?

That episode or real close to it was when I stopped watching Murphy Brown. It crossed the line from a show with political content to a political show. Ironically, Candice Bergen mostly agreed with Quayle but saying so at the time would be bad for ratings.

The thing about Veeps is that, today, they are supposed to make the president look better.  How deep in the bottom of the barrel did the democrats have to scrape when they only had Joe "gaffer" Biden to pick to make Obama look smarter.  "

/the real reason Obama will never be impeached is because he has impeachment insurance, "President Joe Biden".

Do you seriously not see the difference?  How the latter takes the pressure off of being the former?  Quayle is saying that there is one proper size and shape to a family.  The latter says that families can come in all shapes and sizes, and you can't have too many people in your life that you consider family, regardless of whether they are related to you.

Especially in hindsight, this should be self evident.  Apparently not.

When a wingnut says Biden is the worst vp of all time, he's not trying to convince you that Biden is the worst vp off all time, he's simply sending out a wingnut mating call.
fwiw, Truman was the most befuddling vp pick of the modern presidency. Modern=FDR on.
Qualye's problem was compounded by the perception that he also looked stupid.

For the life of me, I still can't remember if I watched those episodes or not. My parents were evidently bad conservative parents because they let me watch it in general, and I know I saw some of the baby episodes, but it's driving me nuts trying to remember if I saw this in particular.

Such a weird cultural moment though.

From 1977 to 1992, Carter was called the worst ever.  In 1993, Clinton was called the worst president ever, and he continued to be called that until 2008.  Obama will be called the worst ever until the next Democrat is elected.   Republicans always think that the current or most recent Democratic office holder is the "worst ever" because Fox News and AM radio tell them to think that, and they have the memory and attentionspan of a crack-addled chipmunk.

So to answer your question, no I don't know what makes you mistakenly believe that.  Go ahead and tell me.

I always loved what Dennis Miller had to say following the Quayle/Gore/Stockdale:

"Now I know (Stockdale's name has) become a buzzword in this culture for doddering old man, but let's look at the record, folks. The guy was the first guy in and the last guy out of Vietnam, a war that many Americans, including our present President, did not want to dirty their hands with.

"The reason he had to turn his hearing aid on at that debate is because those f***ing animals knocked his eardrums out when he wouldn't spill his guts. He teaches philosophy at Stanford University, he's a brilliant, sensitive, courageous man. And yet he committed the one unpardonable sin in our culture: he was bad on television.

"Somewhere out there Paddy Chayefsky must be laughing his ass off. We should be ashamed of ourselves. Could he have been our Vice President? Of course he could've been our Vice President. You think Al Gore is a charismatic visionary? His favorite film is Tron, for Christ's sake!

"And how tough can this job be, look who did it for the last four years. Dan Quayle ... shouldn't have been second in command of the Hekawi tribe from "F Troop," much less the ... most powerful nation on the face of the planet ..."

"Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."
