What a terrible thing to have lost one's mind. Or not to have a mind at all. How true that is.

2013-09-01 12:53:03 PM
In his defense, he certainly hasn't been the dumbest person to run for vice-president

The Vice-Presidency a politically correct way for a party to get rid of Senators that need to go.

True. In comparison Dan Quayle is damn near a genius.

I don't know if he was truly the dumbest, but making a stink about Murphy Brown was one of the dumbest political flaps I've ever seen. Dan Quayle lost that PR battle and then the show kind of jumped the shark not long afterward.

I don't remember Obama being VP.

The best Dan Quayle spoof was from SNL.  They had I think Michael J Fox playing him during the president's state of the union speech.  And it was a simple sketch; just Dan Quayle not knowing when to stand up and clap.  He just couldn't get it right.

I still love that sketch.

Dan Quayle is hoping you'll run for VP so he can relinquish the title.

Srsly.

I made it about two paragraphs in before I realized that a. the author hadn't really said anything yet and b. this was a socio-political discussion revolving around a show that went of the air nearly 20 years ago.

Seems like it was part of the 1992 GOP playbook. Quayle bashes Murphy Brown, H.W. Bush bashes The Simpsons and then Pat Buchanan said this:

The agenda Clinton & Clinton would impose on America-abortion on demand, a litmus test for the Supreme Court, homosexual rights, discrimination against religious schools, women in combat-that's change, all right. But it is not the kind of change America wants. It is not the kind of change America needs. And it is not the kind of change we can tolerate in a nation that we still call God's country. [...] There is a religious war going on in our country for the soul of America. It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we will one day be as was the Cold War itself.

Boy, that all seems like I heard it yesterday. Oh wait, I did; it's also the current GOP playbook.

I am convinced that the entire Bush presidency and the 2008 election cycle were a nefarious plot by the Republican Party to make Nixon look reasonable.  Seriously.  In comparison to the entire 8 years, and especially the GOP primary slate of 2008, Nixon looks reasonable, Ronald Regan looks fiscally responsible, Dan Quayle looks like a farking genius...  You couldn't have cleaned up that legacy better.

Here's the difference. Paraphrased to evoke what the other side heard.

Quayle (gender: male): "The problem with our country is too many women choosing to be single mothers."

Clinton (gender: female): "Groups and communities should be involved in raising children."

One comment (at worst) advocated commune thinking and socialism, the other comment blamed the Children of Eve for the sins of driving away absent fathers and ruining the morals of the nation.

As if single mothers enjoy shouldering the burden of parenthood alone. Only an asshole makes that argument.

Yeah, but the long form?

Potatoe was correct for most of the 20th century. Here is an example from the New York Times:
Two disappointments came in the seafood category. A dish called halibut peperonata was described by our captain as spicy, but in fact the timidly seasoned fillet came out with a latticework of roasted peppers combined with spinach and a bland carrot-and-potatoe puree.

Do you seriously not see the difference?  How the latter takes the pressure off of being the former?  Quayle is saying that there is one proper size and shape to a family.  The latter says that families can come in all shapes and sizes, and you can't have too many people in your life that you consider family, regardless of whether they are related to you.

Especially in hindsight, this should be self evident.  Apparently not.

From 1977 to 1992, Carter was called the worst ever.  In 1993, Clinton was called the worst president ever, and he continued to be called that until 2008.  Obama will be called the worst ever until the next Democrat is elected.   Republicans always think that the current or most recent Democratic office holder is the "worst ever" because Fox News and AM radio tell them to think that, and they have the memory and attentionspan of a crack-addled chipmunk.

So to answer your question, no I don't know what makes you mistakenly believe that.  Go ahead and tell me.

I always loved what Dennis Miller had to say following the Quayle/Gore/Stockdale:

"Now I know (Stockdale's name has) become a buzzword in this culture for doddering old man, but let's look at the record, folks. The guy was the first guy in and the last guy out of Vietnam, a war that many Americans, including our present President, did not want to dirty their hands with.

"The reason he had to turn his hearing aid on at that debate is because those f***ing animals knocked his eardrums out when he wouldn't spill his guts. He teaches philosophy at Stanford University, he's a brilliant, sensitive, courageous man. And yet he committed the one unpardonable sin in our culture: he was bad on television.

"Somewhere out there Paddy Chayefsky must be laughing his ass off. We should be ashamed of ourselves. Could he have been our Vice President? Of course he could've been our Vice President. You think Al Gore is a charismatic visionary? His favorite film is Tron, for Christ's sake!

"And how tough can this job be, look who did it for the last four years. Dan Quayle ... shouldn't have been second in command of the Hekawi tribe from "F Troop," much less the ... most powerful nation on the face of the planet ..."

It's weird...I'm not a Liberal but I enjoyed Biden before 2008.  He was on Bill Maher and he had actual thoughts and discussions...and talking points.  And when Bill asked if he was running, he didn't mince words, he said yes.  I genuinely liked the guy, and was going to vote for him.

But now...yikes.  Maybe it's the political position...but he and Quayle are some duuuuumb motherfarkers.

I almost hate to admit this, but "Murphy Brown" is what we used to watch before "The Daily Show" came along. Younger viewers might have trouble picking their way through it, because it was almost pathologically trenchant; if there weren't a dozen recent pop political references in each episode, it was slacking off. To low-information viewers, the show just seemed too much like homework.

Remember also that this was before the Fox Newsgasm that decided they were going to create their own little reality and pretend that "balance" has anything to do with facts. There's more of Walter Cronkite and 60 Minutes in "Murphy Brown" than Fox and Friends. It might not be out of place to see "Network," "Murphy Brown," and "Newsroom" as representing the beginning, middle, and end of television as a source of political (in the classical sense of "political") information, but for each instance you absolutely HAVE to understand the context of the show. "Network" might presage Glenn Beck's foaming rantings (and I am 100% convinced that he's a conman who doesn't believe a word he says - he wrote a book called "The Overton Window," for God's sake) but it was meant to be a satire, not a prediction.

Newsflash: a bunch of bloggers in their 20s and early 30's, writing for a younger audience, watch Murphy Brown and don't quite understand it. That is so surprising that I have to go and sit down for a few minutes because of that surprise.

TV shows (or sometimes movies) full of topical references don't get interesting, in my opinion, until they're at least 50 years old and you have to do some digging to understand the points.

Otherwise, such shows make me appreciate the sitcoms of Bob Newhart, which expressly stayed away from topical references. Even today, clothing and telephones aside, his shows' episodes are fun and funny.

While Al Gore's legacy is littered with really embarrassing quotes that are zingers on their own, you've chosen to misquote him. Twice.

On the basketball issue, he said "I tell you that Michael Jackson is unbelievable, isn't he. He's just unbelievable." Source: The Chicago Tribune June 17, 1998. Still a stupid gaffe, but misquoting it is just as stupid.

As far as the Internet quote is concerned, the GOP's propaganda machine and the continuing repeat of the misquote by Fox News seems to have had its effect on you. Gore was a sponsor of both the 1988 High-Performance Computer Act and the Information Infrastructure and Technology Act of 1992, legislation that opened the Internet from just academia and defense to schmoes like you who repeat lies and misquotes to make yourself feel important. Did he "invent" the Internet, no. As one of the most technologically-savvy legislators at the time, he did understand what the Internet was and could see the importance (and commercial possibilities) of information sharing on a scale never before imagined. He did all he could to support its growth through helping craft and support legislation that removed barriers to commercialization and that led to the development of the web-centric application businesses we know today like Twitter, Facebook, Fark, Vivid, Bang Bros., and Tube8. Without his efforts, we wouldn't be able to access free porn 24/7 and for that, he's a hero in my book.

Lee451: Of course, two seasons later the kid is written out of the show and never mentioned again. Proving VP Quayle's point exactly.

/Retroactive abortion, anyone?

grinding_journalist: whither_apophis: A bunch of people sitting around biatching how a show from 1992 seems dated? That blog sucks.

Srsly.

I made it about two paragraphs in before I realized that a. the author hadn't really said anything yet and b. this was a socio-political discussion revolving around a show that went of the air nearly 20 years ago.

And being farking smug about it.  It's like going back to an episode of Laverne and Shirley and saying "but they really didn't do that in the 50s".

I managed to get through the entire smug, better than thou reviews of a show that was highly popular in the 90s.  You can NOT go back in time and evaluate what was funny then, what pathos it carried or what was considered "good" comedic writing. Even those who were "old enough" (probably about 10 when it was on), seem to have missed the point entirely.

Then, as now, Republicans had a problem with women and their choices, but in picking the argument that "dads aren't important" when a woman was having a baby would be using the sitcom now saying "look, Murphy isn't aborting her child!  Wonderful show!"

The one geek in particular that had never even heard of the show saying "she gave the news in a flat, vaudevillian way" had no idea that women were still a rarity in network news and had to be as dull as the men (but much better looking) to even be on the air.  Everyone seems to think the world was always this way - women getting jobs in the field they wanted, having somewhat equal lives as men.  Well kiddies, it wasn't like that then.

peasandcarrots: I almost hate to admit this, but "Murphy Brown" is what we used to watch before "The Daily Show" came along. Younger viewers might have trouble picking their way through it, because it was almost pathologically trenchant; if there weren't a dozen recent pop political references in each episode, it was slacking off.

I used to watch the show too, and I found pretty much all of the pop political (and other cultural) references to be be forced and trite, as in "here's what's trending in the news today, let's make an obvious joke about it for a cheap laugh!" The show has aged about as well as Laugh-In, and Laugh-In at least had hotties in bikinis.
