What a terrible thing to have lost one's mind. Or not to have a mind at all. How true that is.

2013-09-01 12:53:03 PM
In his defense, he certainly hasn't been the dumbest person to run for vice-president

2013-09-01 01:08:07 PM
The Vice-Presidency a politically correct way for a party to get rid of Senators that need to go.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: In his defense, he certainly hasn't been the dumbest person to run for vice-president

True. In comparison Dan Quayle is damn near a genius.

2013-09-01 01:13:24 PM
I don't know if he was truly the dumbest, but making a stink about Murphy Brown was one of the dumbest political flaps I've ever seen. Dan Quayle lost that PR battle and then the show kind of jumped the shark not long afterward.

2013-09-01 01:16:36 PM
I don't remember Obama being VP.

2013-09-01 01:19:34 PM
The best Dan Quayle spoof was from SNL.  They had I think Michael J Fox playing him during the president's state of the union speech.  And it was a simple sketch; just Dan Quayle not knowing when to stand up and clap.  He just couldn't get it right.

I still love that sketch.

Dan Quayle is hoping you'll run for VP so he can relinquish the title.

If you gave him a penny for his thoughts, you'd get change back

Lord, that's awful. Did that strike you as clever? Did you reject other one-liners and decide that one was the real zinger?

Man freak7 made my ignore list faster than neighborhood watch.  impressive.

A bunch of people sitting around biatching how a show from 1992 seems dated? That blog sucks.

Srsly.

I made it about two paragraphs in before I realized that a. the author hadn't really said anything yet and b. this was a socio-political discussion revolving around a show that went of the air nearly 20 years ago.

This is not only just a whiny bitter attempt at political humor but it fails to make sense within the context of the headline. No wonder this person votes Republican.

The proper version of that joke would be that everyone knows George W Bush was the dumbest US vice president.

2013-09-01 01:33:34 PM
How could I have forgotten this dope??? I was thinking Spiro "Ted" Agnew, the genius on the disgraceful Nixon ticket.

2013-09-01 01:35:48 PM
Call him dumb all you like, but Dan Quayle, now a political consultant, engineered the Republicans retaking the House in 2010 and created the Tea Party.

Seems like it was part of the 1992 GOP playbook. Quayle bashes Murphy Brown, H.W. Bush bashes The Simpsons and then Pat Buchanan said this:

The agenda Clinton & Clinton would impose on America-abortion on demand, a litmus test for the Supreme Court, homosexual rights, discrimination against religious schools, women in combat-that's change, all right. But it is not the kind of change America wants. It is not the kind of change America needs. And it is not the kind of change we can tolerate in a nation that we still call God's country. [...] There is a religious war going on in our country for the soul of America. It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we will one day be as was the Cold War itself.

Boy, that all seems like I heard it yesterday. Oh wait, I did; it's also the current GOP playbook.

I am convinced that the entire Bush presidency and the 2008 election cycle were a nefarious plot by the Republican Party to make Nixon look reasonable.  Seriously.  In comparison to the entire 8 years, and especially the GOP primary slate of 2008, Nixon looks reasonable, Ronald Regan looks fiscally responsible, Dan Quayle looks like a farking genius...  You couldn't have cleaned up that legacy better.

Thanks to subby and the verbose masturbation of the assembled authors, I now know I may be an old man, but I'm not yelling at clouds yet. Seriously Discussing "Murphy Brown" in 2012? Let me give the geezers at A/V their next roundtable - The Edsel as a single parent raising Jerry Van Dyke in "My Mother The Car." Relevant. Timely. A/V Club.

I don't recognize the guy in your picture. This was the RNC Chairman when the GOP won the 2010 midterms.

And I didn't and that joke was awful. Look, son, we can all appreciate a truly witty troll, but that's so far removed from even marginal humor that most sensible people would have died from shame shortly after posting that.

dumb or not, at least people remember him unlike most VP's

Freak7 wins the thread!  Nobody else is going to get as much attention and replies!

Had I not seen the # of responses, I'd have rated it about a 2, but now I give him a solid 8 or 9!  Impressive, dude!

What did we do to deserve such terrible trolls?

I'm really starting to miss internet dentistry and black cats.

They laughed at Dan Quayle for saying we need fewer single moms and then Hillary is recognized as a wise sage for saying "it takes a village to raise a child."

To me, now, looking back on the early '90s, I remember a lot of fear. I remember being petrified that Bill Clinton's election meant the United States would lose favor with God

And I bet the author continued masturbating regardless.

2013-09-01 02:03:00 PM
it just occurred to me that for as much attention as Murphy Brown got in the early 90s, practically no one has been talking about the show since Friends went on the air.

Anyone who writes a sentence fragment that begins "In which" should be shot.

If you're referring to Ryan, as much as I dislike that chode gobbler, Quayle was about a thousand light years dumber.

I wrote a paper on this issue for my voting behavior and public opinion class. That was the fall semester of 1992, so it was a tad more topical then.

I agree the quality of trolls has declined dramatically.  People used to put a little effort into their alts.

That may be so, but to be totally fair, Quayle's plan to reduce single motherhood involved starving them all to death,

Obama would have hung the teachers out to dry and made sure he showed the card to the media.
