I wanted to buy one of those when I was in high school.  A guy was selling one for $800.  I took it out for test drive, hit a pothole, and the "H" bar at the front that held the front axle on snapped on the left side.  Turns out they were notorious for rusting through.  I brought it back, told the guy about the rod, and he said "I was hoping I could sell it before I had to replace that."

I still kick myself for not picking it up.  They're worth tons more these days, even if they are in shiatty condition.

Didn't VW route the exhaust through the cabin for heat?

The finish on karmann ghias made them look crappy and cheap.

Sgygus: The finish on karmann ghias made them look crappy and cheap.

Back in the '80s when HB was full of surfers and skaters before the yuppies came I lived on 7th right across from the beach.  There was one parked in front of the house often that was covered in leopard fur. Nothing crappy and cheap about the finish on that one!!

My dad had one when I was about 14 years old.  I sooo wanted to drive it, it was just so cool.  Sadly it had been driven into the ground before I was old enough to drive.

I had a friend that died in one of those.  She was making a left hand turn and a dump truck ran the light and ran her over.

If you do get a Karmann Ghia, park it in your garage and admire it.  Drive it on the track.  Have fun.

But don't take it on the road.

the same could be said for about any car,  they still don't make cars dump truck proof.

Not entirely. The exhaust was ran inside another larger tube (outside the cabin) that heated the air inside of it. That larger tube then provided the heated air for the cabin. As long as it was all sealed, everything was fine.

Karmann Ghias are made from tissue paper.  Modern cars have passenger cages and crumple zones.  If she'd been in a Camry or an Accord she'd have probably been OK.

That would be a great model for VW to "reboot" like they did with the beetle. A modern KG could be gorgeous.

Since seeing my first one back in the 60s, I've always thought they looked like a regular VW (the bug, the sedan) that's been sat on by an elephant.

They are very cool, though, but not as easy for me to fit in as the beetle.

THIS.  Give it modern safety features and finish, give it better power - or even make it a hybrid if you like, and I bet it would take off like gangbusters.

Air cooled VWs in general make great platforms for electric conversions. You can give them as much power as you dare.

still pissed off that i had to dump my last ghia, a resto work in progress. the coont that sat on The Big Toilet at that time made it an illegal sin to have an uninsured unregistered motor vehicle on your property. local PD responded in days with a HUGE farking orange sticker on the windshield letting me know they'd revoke my license, rape my wife and kick my dog (no, not really) if i wasn't legal in a matter of days. health and money made it impossible and i had to sell it dirt cheap to quickly get it off the property. dammit to hell.

I saw my first electric beetle here in town earlier this year. I only noticed it because I had the window rolled down and the car wasn't making any noise as I passed it. I slowed to let it pass me and at the next light I pulled up next to it to see how it would accelerate. It was at least as quick as a stock 40-horse mid-60's Bug, but without the engine clatter and the blue fumes... ;^).

Figured, but remembered a while back that Rolls Royce sold their automotive name to one company and their car designs/logos to another ... or something like that.

VW has shown couple of rear-mid roadster concepts - round off the edges and offer a coupe and you have a modern KG along the lines of the New Beetle V2.0

Too much money for the HP.  Plumbing in the oils system sucks too much butt.  Just go with a Rabby type IV and rip it up.

I would certainly hope so. When I first became interested in performance cars, it was all about nostalgia: the peak of performance had been reached in the late sixties to early seventies, and was gone forever, and was never coming back. If you had told me in 1984 that you would be able to buy a Corvette that made over 600 horsepower in 2009, I would not have believed you.

I prefer the look of '66 fastback to that of the Karmann Ghia myself, but I would never be happy with it in stock form. I wouldn't be satisfied until it was something like this one
