You guys need to look at this optimistically.

It's the Browns. The only time they'll be kicking off is to start the half, so that problem is easily solved, just kick it out of bounds and start the other team on their own 40. I assume Chudzinski is bringing back the quick kick so the QB has that locked down. With the short punts it'll give the coverage team time to get downfield and prevent the expected big-yardage returns.

Instead of wasting roster spots on useless kickers, they can waste them on useless linemen to try to keep Weeden alive. Since none of it is going to matter this year (or any other year) it's really not a big deal.

George Blanda did 2 jobs with one spot on the roster.

/really 3 - he was a linebacker as well, at least early in his career
//actually 4 - since 'kickoff returner specialist' is now a position
///do the Bills have such a four-tuel player?

Please. Green Bay's asinine commitment to Crosby has not helped them conjure up an actual defense or given them clairvoyance enough to find another Super Bowl.

Geezus, no kidding. They ended up keeping David Akers in favor of "Kickalicious" because "Akers was the safe choice" (per PTI's Wilbon, and though I couldn't find corroboration of that quote elsewhere, it sounds so Lions-ish that I can't help but believe it).

Akers.

The Safe Choice.

It actually is a pretty simple position that many qualified people can currently fill immediately. Humorous, yes, problematic...hardly.

I'm wondering, did the Browns leave a roster spot open for a kicker or do they have a full roster and someone's getting bumped when they sign a kicker?

Somebody in their front office must've really, really liked the trick shot guy that was cut by the Lions.

Some weird rosters right now.

Ravens have 2 TEs that DON'T have a broken hip, and only 4 CBs, but 7 WR and 5 safeties.

Redskins brought a rookie in last year during the season and he set a record for most consecutive makes to start a career, along with the team having their best season since 1999.

Why couldn't they do this a few days ago? I got to go to their game against the bears Thursday, missing a kicker might have changed the outcome.

And there are a few kickers available.  Cundiff's kicked in Cleveland before; Carpenter would be an okay choice. I think the big reason they cut both kickers was because they were both fighting injuries (which is why the punter was kicking FG's against the Bears.)

I also speculated that neither the kicker nor the punter was on the roster yet. Zoltan Mesko looks like a pretty good add right about now...

Pretty sure the Pats would have kept him if  he was cheaper but the new kid is good enough and his contract won't be running out next year.

I actually expected (hoped) the Space Emperor of Space would stay with the Pats based on preseason punting.

I miss Phil Dawson already. It's sad that a kicker was our most consistent player since we came back in '99, but it is what it is. The guy could kick well in any condition. I'll never forget the blizzard game against Buffalo a few years back, and Dawson's kicking was the only advantage we had.

Stupid to let him go. But...we're the Browns. It's what we do.

The Raiders kept 4 qbs and 2 punters, so yeah... They really want the first pick.

I don't get why they wouldn't pay Dawson.  There are no cap issues. There was no young stud kicker they needed to keep.  Getting rid of him makes no sense.

A cheap owner who doesn't want to spend a cent more on the team that he has to?  An owner who thinks that the team spending $500,000 more on a veteran kicker than a rookie is a wasted half million?  Does this sound familiar Browns fans?

...well, they've used the franchise tag on him twice to keep him around.  I guess they figured that three years of trying to get him to commit the rest of his career to the Browns was enough.

If the history of Miami Dolphins football tells me anything, they'll pick up Dan Carpenter and next week he'll kick four 55+ yard field goals and go 6 for 6 on PATs after Davone Bess scores six touchdowns, including two from the wildcat formation.

Green Bay tried out a third kicker that may make the practice squad. Crosby is on a short leash this year. Can't really blame the defense on how many injuries piled up last year either, now those guys are healthy and ready. Seriously, haven't been to the Super Bowl in three whole years... gasp, or whatever.
