I'm outraged. I guess. Well, not really sure about what. Meh, whatever

2013-08-31 09:07:10 PM
Claiming that this would be met with "howls of outrage" means fairly little.  Blackface means something in western society, not in Thailand, and I'm not entirely sure we should be imposing our taboos on them.

A couple days ago I ate at a duck place in Beijing restaurant called "Chef Dong's Braised Sea Cucumber."  Across the street from my hotel was a place that served donkey hamburgers (I'm guessing South African style). Either of these would be met with howls of laughter or derisionif attempted in the US.

Anyway, if Human Rights Watch wants to have some impact on the world, they should look approximately 4200 miles west of Thailand.

If this is the worst thing happening, life is good.

I also don't think this was intended to be "black face", so much as the idea of everything being coated in chocolate powder, with just her lipstick being unscathed for contrast.  Like those photos where you turn everything to grayscale except for a flower, or the person's blue eyes or something.

They didn't go for the exaggerated lips, leave the area around the eyes unpainted or give her a black hairstyle like in a typical blackface, nor is there anything else going on in the messaging to imply racial overtones.

Thailand runs away from Dunkin'?

I agree, it's not really blackface as much as she looks like she's covered in laser printer toner.  Actual black people aren't anywhere near that black, and even her fingernails are painted black.

2013-08-31 10:42:34 PM
soooo...charcoal...yeah, that's racist...

Simple explanation- for the Left, it's always 1965.  It has to be.  If they had to admit to the actual lack of racism, they'd never win another election.  Drummed-up incidents like these, which are completely baseless, are entirely necessary for them to get their base stirred up and keep them on the plantation.

2013-08-31 10:45:32 PM
Soon they'll be complaining about white people driving black cars.

Dear Race Baiting Media,
That is not blackface so fark off.
Sincerely,
Everyone with half a brain

2013-08-31 10:46:39 PM
Wut? That was not blackface. Every time someone is painted darker does not automatically make it blackface. Blackface is a particular thing, and that's not it.

So the US is exporting it's white guilt to Asia now?

//Charcoal doughnut?
///That's the opposite of delicious sounding.

FTA: The CEO for Dunkin' Donuts in Thailand, which is operated as a franchise, was initially bullish about the marketing. "It's absolutely ridiculous," said Nadim Salhani. "We're not allowed to use black to promote our doughnuts? I don't get it. What's the big fuss? What if the product was white and I painted someone white, would that be racist?"
Salhani said his daughter was the model used in the advert. He dismissed criticism as "paranoid American thinking", saying: "I'm sorry, but this is a marketing campaign and it's working very well for us."

That. There is absolutely nothing racist about that at all. More hypertolerant butthurt garbage.

Afterwards, Dunkin offered their patrons free toothpaste for brushing up after eating the donuts (a very popular brand in Asia a while back...)

Don't think I'd ever eat something called a charcoal donut.
And the thought "negro" never entered my mind looking at the ad.
I'm so tired of the outrage industry.

I know "mudmen" is a word favored by some racists to designate swarthy sub-humans, but would a racist name his company for them?

This is the same attitude that locked speedy Gonzales away for years because of 'ethnic stereotyping' in the US, while at the same time in Latin America, SG was still on the air and a popular character.   Someone had to get upset for them and remove access to the material in a way that affected nothing besides first world guilt.

The Thai Duncan Donuts ad is decidedly non-racist and is no different than if one was covered in yellow or pink to overstate the effects of lemon or strawberry donuts respectively.

2013-08-31 10:59:31 PM
So, painting her to be the same color as the doughnut is racist? Really?!

Does that mean black people really are made of chocolate?

I'm not getting the outrage.

But now I want a doughnut, so . . . successful advertising campaign!

All the voting restriction laws are doing a fine job of that.  No need for this whatever you call it to be involved.

2013-08-31 10:59:53 PM
So I guess the fact that all I saw when I looked at the pic was a very hot woman in low lighting with incredibly seductive pink lips holding a donut means that I am a racist or otherwise guilty of a hate crime. Like I've been saying for years, some people wake up every day just waiting to be offended by something.

Goddammit, now "blackface" is going to be the new term that nobody knows how to use correctly?

When they take a White person and darken their skin to make them specifically look like an African American, that's "blackface". When they make someone darkness advertise a chocolate donut, it isn't farking "blackface". It is as much about intent as it is about someone's skin being dark.

Oh, and the lips? That's so the smile is the focus of the ad. What a bunch of retards.

It isn't necessary for the Left to do anything, actually. The Republicans ignoring the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, hatred of a black man in the White House, demonizing everyone with brown skin as a freeloading illegal, attempts at voter suppression -- all of it is doing plenty to help the Left win elections for many years to come.

2013-08-31 11:12:16 PM
Simply coloring someone black doesn't make it racist. Context matters. When KFC starts using blackface, then it'll be racist.

Yeah, no way that this could be racism - after all, who'd think Asians could be racist or anything?

2013-08-31 11:13:35 PM
That's no more blackface than Zoolander covered in coal down in the mine. It doesn't seem to be a reference to race, but rather a reference to the color of the doughnut.

You know blackface when you see it. That's not it. Whoever started this tiff needs to be educated on the matter and then smacked on the knuckles with a ruler so they don't forget their lesson.
