The football team at my high school, they were tough. After they sacked the quarterback, they went after his family.

I grew up in the Florida Panhandle in the 70s. This is the place they'd tell us about in order to make sure we'd behave. My childhood imagination was vivid.

"They were poor kids and a lot of times, people never came to visit them," said Elmore Bryant, a lifelong Marianna resident and head of the NAACP in Jackson County, Florida, which includes Marianna.

"Even when they were dismissed, they got home, their family had moved. So, who was going to pay attention if something happened to them while they was at Dozier?"

God damn, but humans are disgusting farkers.

At one point I went to a Mormon run program  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWASP#Controversy

Lots of abuse, but thankfully no one killed me.

"Some of those who were once sent to Dozier -- now senior citizens -- have come forward with stories of abuse at the school, including alleged beatings, torture, sexual abuse, killings and the disappearance of students, during the 1940s, '50s and '60s."

Hopefully there is a special place in hell, right next to the boiler room, for the "people" that ran this place.

The local residents have been trying to stop the dig for as long as there has been an investigation. Not because they are ashamed of what happened there while they all turned a blind eye but because the graveyard is probably a lot bigger than anyone suspects. The Klan was big in that area  and The Dozier School for Boys was a great place to bury a body.......

What's sad is that even if they prove from the bones that these kids were beaten, shot, etc (and the bones won't lie, always had an interest in forensic anthropology), they won't be able to bring anyone to justice because a) the school is closed and b) the perpetrators are most likely dead or senile in a nursing home.

The only good thing would be at least they have the body and can bury it in a respectful manner instead of in an unmarked grave

The actual stories as told by the boys. It's infinitely worse than what's in the article:

Yeah, this.  The same reason Bethesda in Savannah will never allow an investigation - of course, they get a pass because they're a religious institution.

One of my friends had a brother sent to some "Christian Boot Camp" in Central/South America back in the late 90's early 2000's. I know that in the conservative circles they were seen as usually helpful and that the boys just did physical labor all day with morning and evening Bible study. He would shoot other kids with a BB gun, stuck some other kid's new electric guitar in the shower, that kind of junk. Definitely needed some help.
I never saw him after that as I moved away, but based on the photos of her with her family that I see on Facebook from time to time, they still seem to get along so I'm hoping it wasn't as horrible as most of those programs are.

Here's the official report. It sounds like they might have toned it down for the movie.

But of course when we were young, *we* had it tough.

Our school would wake us up at 5:30 in the morning, half an hour before we went to bed, work us near to death, and then when we finished, the headmaster would slash us in two with bread knife.

And if you try and tell the young people of today that, they won't believe you.

(All kidding aside, this story disgusts me, yet does not surprise me. So few human horrors do these days...)

As much as I distrust the mormons (lower case intentional) since they would like Salt Lake to be their version of Mecca or the Vatican, the Southern Baptist Coalition was quite evil in its day and still wants to be.

I have read of this place. Most of the staff were incredibly sadistic farks. Two of them, RW Hatton and a one armed man named Troy Treadwell were exceptionally cruel...enough to make Josef Mengele cringe. I was kind of surprised none of the boys ever came back after they became men to pulverize those guys.
