Cue the reversal to "why is Obama hiding behind Congress".

Hope and change.

Well, hopefully that's a change.

Is he saying there are Weapons Of Mass Destruction involved? Has Colin Powell confirmed this?

Already got this during the speech from a coworker.

Lets hope congress votes for a peaceful resolution.

Any bets on the split in the house vote?  Tie break will be the total that vote present/abstain

He's violating the Prime Directive. We shouldn't interfere with a pre-reality-TV population.

2013-08-31 02:38:49 PM
As I said in the redlit thread, there are powerful industry lobbyists who would like it to happen and they are well acquainted with getting their way. Its not over yet. If you don't want it to happen, this would be a good time to let your Congresscritters know. I'm sure those on the other side of the issue will do so as well.

2013-08-31 02:38:49 PM
Guess its time to call some congressmen.

2013-08-31 02:38:53 PM
I think he is really regretting the whole "red line" line. His honor and his word was lied down and now it has to be backed up. I think it is a credit to him that he is calling on Congress at this time.

I've debated and argued the whole time that the President put his foot in his mouth. Most of the knee jerk defenders of the President said that he didn't, that I was too dim to understand the brilliance of the statement and that it didn't mean that we would be forced to back it up. Now it looks like the President agrees with me. I don't think he really wants to start another war. I don't think any President ever wanted to start a war. Hopefully the Congress shoots him down. That way the world will see that we are not governed by a dictator that can use our forces to kill by his command, but instead ruled by a set of laws that all must obey.

Who are we to punish Syria? Not our job. We can't get involved in everyone's civil wars. What about atrocities in African civil wars?

Kevin72: I hope congress tells him to fark off and not Iraq us.

Maybe that's the point. Maybe he's trying to get the GOP to oppose a land war in Asia by telling them that he wants a land war in Asia.

LasersHurt: See? Told you. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

This has nothing to do with that.  Obama drew a line in the sand months ago over the use of chemical weapons and has waffled ever since it was first confirmed that they had indeed been used in Syria.

2013-08-31 02:39:33 PM
Well, we know that the trolls and teabaggers were going to find fault with whatever he decided, so I look forward to finding out how "I want to take it slow and let Congress decide" becomes "OMFG HES A DICTATORR!!1!"

...or is this indicative of him being an ineffectual empty suit?

2013-08-31 02:39:34 PM
Remember when the Iraq WMD claims were shown to be bogus and the shills on the right would say, "but Saddam was a bad man, he gassed his own people?"

Pepperidge Farms remembers.

Article headline:  "Obama will seek authorization from Congress before any military action against Syria"

I watched this announcement, and as far as I can tell, he never said that he WOULDN'T intervene if Congress voted it down.  He just said he would seek a vote from Congress.

2013-08-31 02:39:53 PM

JerseyTim: Why does he have to follow the Constitution? Why won't he just lead?

Well he could order Congress to meet ASAP rather than wait 1 1/2 weeks to even begin debate.

/ also note how Obama reaffirmed his right to violate the Constitution if he felt like it

As much as the situation sucks, the headline is why I'm hoping they won't do it.  It's the one time where being a bunch of selfish, self-centered pricks helps us out as a country.

\and we don't need to go there, they've never been truly interested in our help, and they're never GOING to be either.

And what would that peaceful resolution be?

Congress votes to ask Assad "Pretty please...?"

great headline!

Wait for it...

If things get worse, it will be the Republicans fault for not getting involved.

If things get better, we will get to hear about how wise Obama was for not getting us involved.

2013-08-31 02:42:13 PM
ha ha awesome, the House baggers will have to take responsibility for the decision to attack or not.

/ Actually they'll try to impeach Obama for doing whatever they recommend.

Wow subs. Thanks for that. I laughed SO hard.

Are you kidding? The Republicans see this as a golden chance to justify boosting defense spending and keeping defense contractors happy.

Now that would be something to see. A nobel peace prize winner vetoing a vote for peace.

Don't give Congress ideas, the farkholes in the House literally will write it into their resolution that the funding for war will come from the defunding of PPACA (and a 50% cut on food stamps).

That's because people of Mediterranean descent are considered white. It's why we intervened in Kosovo and not Rwanda.

PLEASE PROCEED CONGRESS

If you go to war based on actual evidence, you'll just fark yourself.  If you go in based on a fiction you can change it to fit your needs in the future.  Libtards.

Where did this talking point come from, anyway? I see it in all these threads.

2013-08-31 02:44:10 PM

BigNumber12: American people? What American people?!

Um...asking the peoples' representatives to meet and decide the issue is ignoring the people (who are basically evenly divided on the issue anyway)?

What you meant to say was "Waaaaaaahh!"

If Congress is looking to get ideas from Fark headlines, I'm sure it's only from stories with the Florida tag.
