(io9)   Early carousels were pretty risqué for a Victorian woman to ride. She'd sit side-saddle; her suitor would be able to hold on to her waist while the carousel went around and look at her exposed ankle and ... um, I'll be in my canopy bed   (io9.com) divider line 37

The men who carved these saw a lot of different horses every day, they knew horses intimately.

Accident Park was what we called it. I thought the bumps and bruises were part of the fun.

I'm still not sure why people think that Victorian England was so repressed sexually that the mere thought of a carousel ride would turn people on.  I think that statistics show that London at the time was crammed with cheap bars and cheap prostitutes.

Victorians were good at pretending they didn't have lots of sex, so we think they were stuffy. Also, Queen Vicky wore black like a goth cumslut and had her consort Prince Albert's junk pierced.

No. It's a decision a girl's gotta make early in life, if she's gonna be a nice girl or a coont.

The Puritans actually had some really interesting regulations regarding sex.  For instance, the man was required to bring his wife to orgasm, which was one of the few valid grounds for divorce if he failed, and have sex pretty much as often as possible.

Having ridden on an Illions carousel at Six Flags New England this past Thursday, I'm getting a kick out of this thread.

Man, those things are beautiful. The sheer craftsmanship that went into them is amazing. I highly recommend getting on an old carousel if there's one around you just to study the artistry of the animals.

You're going to that special level of hell, Subby, reserved for sodomites and those who talk during the Third Movement of Verdi's latest symphony.

Back when I used a lot of postage stamps and bought them frequently, there was a series of gorgeous stamps of carousel horses (and a camel). I bought a whole bunch of them and used them for years.

/I miss pretty stamps

The Firefly quote or Verdi? Because Verdi was the easiest Victorian-era composer I could spell without Google.

I'd love to see someone remake those crazy ass rides and offer XTREME thrill rides on it. Probably $100 a ride for that wooden spinning floor thingy.
shiat was nuts.

I always thought about all the extra, dangling fabric they wore when doing anything. How many people were choked to death by Coney Island, I wonder?

Verdi is known for operas (like the one about the Suez Canal and the mobile woman named Donna) not symphonies.

If you ever find yourself traveling on I-35 near Story City Iowa, take a few minutes out of your trip to stop by their old historic carousel.

We have family up north and have been passing by Story City for years. Last year we finally stopped, we will stop again.

The speed on it is crazy fast. I've never been on another carousel where I could actually feel the wind in my hair from the speed of the ride.

Rides are only something like 50 cents. Totally worth it.
