It looks like a hybrid of a traditional (hass) avocado and a Florida Avacado (pictured below)

kgi.org

The Florida Avacados are much larger than the Hass, but they aren't as good - the flesh is waterier with less fat content.

If it is that " Rare " then how can you sell it for just three pounds?

Bacon: Developed by a farmer, James Bacon, in 1954, Bacon has medium-sized fruit with smooth, green skin with yellow-green, light tasting flesh. When ripe, the skin remains green, but darkens slightly, and fruit yields to gentle pressure. It is cold-hardy down to−5 °C (23 °F)

That's about $4.65 in dollars.  Around here avocados go from 2 or 3 for a dollar in season to $1 each out of season, so it's pricey compared to regular ones.

Recipe for Happiness:

Haas Avocados, 1 per person or more
1 tbsp or so of lemon or lime juice per fruit
1 heavy pinch of kosher salt per fruit
1 heaping tbsp of homemade salsa per fruit
Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Shell and seed fruit, add citrus.  Mash most of fruit with seasonings and salsa.  Chop the remainder of the avocado and stir in for texture.  Serve with chips, Pacifico (in frosted mug), and margaritas.

It looks almost identical to a Florida avocado and they sell those at my local supermarket. They're not as good as Hass though.

Unless your house salsa has lots of garlic you'll need some of that as well =)

Uh, tomatoes plus avacado is the definition of guac, without tomatoe it's just an avacdo spread.

When I have tried giant avocados (no idea of the variety) they have been a thin liner of meat wrapped around a gigantic seed. I get as much or more usable flesh from a Haas.

2013-08-31 03:44:51 AM
Look, you can add your tomatoes or onions or cilantro to guacamole if you want. Nobody cares, though your addition of choice is not a guacamole requisite.

I roasted (for the hell of it) some serrano peppers, wiped their charred skins off and chopped them into my guacamole earlier this week. It was good.

I wonder how much bigger the pits get when you buy the monsters. I've found that a lot of the nom stuff is displaced by the pits on the big pretty avocados.

TuteTibiImperes: a traditional (hass) avocado

Although the Hass is very popular now, it is not traditional. It is a recent sport, from a seed planted in 1926, that almost was cut down when it refused grafts from the  Fuerte avocado trees (the leading commercial cultivar at the time)

The Hass avocado had one of its first commercial successes at the Model Grocery Store on Colorado Street in Pasadena, California, where chefs working for some of the town's wealthy residents bought the new cultivar's big, nutty-tasting fruit for $1 each, a very high price at the time (more than USD15.00 of inflation adjusted value by 2007).

Owing to later suburban sprawl in Southern California, the mother tree stood for many years in front of a residence in La Habra Heights. The tree died when it was 76 years old and was cut down on 11 September 2002 after a ten-year fight with (root rot), which often kills avocado trees.

in his defense, it must be eaten that day. Even if refrigerated, it goes brown quickly with tomatoes present.

I hesitate to add a plant with compounds cited as toxic, carcinogenic and shock-sensitive explosiveness to my guacamole.

Even though around here that's just 'Tuesday'

What the hell happened on the avocado market? A decade ago they were a little scarce and you had to pay extra, now they're in everything.

They use the adjective "juicy" to describe this monstrosity?!

Do British people really like "juicy" avocados?

Sounds horrible.

I'll stick with my small, single serving Haas.

wildcardjack: What the hell happened on the avocado market? A decade ago they were a little scarce and you had to pay extra, now they're in everything.

Turns out the have the right kind of fat in them, that actually is good for your heart and lowers your bad cholesterol. My doctor actually recommended that I try to eat one serving a day.

And they taste really good in so many things.

But yeah, I remember when I moved back to Wisconsin for a year, in 2004, the produce section at the supermarket had like eight avocados, half shriveled and the other half hard an green.

I was squeezing them gently, to see if any were worth buying to eat that day, and a woman came over to ask if I knew how to pick a good one. I should have gotten her number...

Fun fact: "avocado" is a modification of Spanish aguacate, from Nahuatl āhuacatl, meaning testicle

So we're talking one big ball here.

wow, a different variety of avocado is bigger than the haas variety! what a story!

This should make you farkers happy. No it is not me in the pic.  Similar flavor the the Haas just giant naturally, and not manipulated for size like the florida ones.

This is a Colombian Avocado, a typical one, and a kitten.

Southern California is the proper place for Hass and Columbian avocados. Just make sure you're at least 60 miles south  or west of the edge of the Mojave, and you're good.
