The Civil War was about states' rights...  to decide if their residents could hold slaves, which were free labor and therefore a huge boon to the economy of slave states.

It was about slavery.  And states' rights.  And economics.  To say that slavery was not a reason is ignorant at best and disingenuous at least.

I wouldn't say the labor was free, you still had to shelter and feed them like any other llivestock y'know.

sick of this shiat.... in any case, here in Richmond, where all this shiat is going down, the majority of folks do NOT want these asses to go through wittheir cunning.plan. You will be hard pressed to find anyone who is going along with this mess.
Believe it or not. A lot of us have moved beyond all that nonsense. If you want to come to town and visit all the preserved history. Please come on Down and let us separate you from your money.

one of my screaming issues is with the flag they want to fly. That is not the flag of the CSA, its not even the battle flag of the CSA, its the skipjack of the army of Tennessee and only represent that group during the great unpleasentness. The Flag they want to fly is better known as the Rebel flag and is more of a pop culture thing. To me at least that Flag represents that these people are really big Dukes of Hazzard or Lynard Skynard fans. Which tells me, and in my hopes of hopes that these "flaggers" are just a bunch of trolls.

but of course, I also understand that despite my opinions and feelings, that particular flag, even if false is best known to the majority of the populace as being the confederate flag, and its imagery is important. But thats also why I think these people are trolling. If they were honest in thier convictions of honering southern heritage, then they would fly the actual flag, and not the dukes of Hazzard flag.

In a way they are correct though.  Most white Southerners didn't own slaves, it was more "them yankies is tell'in us wut to do!"

They were fighting against their own interests just like they are now.  People with low self esteem and fragile pride are easily manipulated and that's why the "Southern Strategy" worked so well.

That was an important time for the culture of the southern states

Plus, who doesn't like to rebel against mainstream culture?

I don't think so.  I think that this is more due to hat fact that the right realizes that they can't hang on to national power, so they are trying to maximize their power at the state and local level.

They know that they are the minority party and they want to strengthen their position.

Look, I get it.  The South had slavery, and there's no way around that, no matter how many angles of States' Rights you throw out there.  It's all inextricably linked together, whether we like it or not.

That being said, there is a lot to be said about the fact that people WANT it to be about States' Rights.  Our country is, in fact, a completely farked up mess, and for a variety of reasons (which are dependent on which part of the South you're in) that's not a popular fact among certain people.  They're completely disillusioned by what's going on and are turning to old symbols and making them into something to believe in.  No matter how you look at it, that's not a good thing for our country's health in the long run.

I'm a child of the South. The people that raised me, and those I associated with, never had much to do with the rednecks that had the confederate flag in the backs of their pick-ups. It doesn't make any sense, nor does claiming not to be a racist while flying a swastika. You don't fly swastika's outside for any reason other than thinking Hitler and company were cool or had the right idea. That's the whole point of flying the swastika.

Anti-black racism is based on lies: They are monkeys, the Bible says we should enslave them, they are made of mud, they are not as intelligent as us etc etc.

Anti-White racism is based on truth: They used us like farm equipment for 400 years, they denied us education and equal rights, they sicced dogs on us etc etc.

And fark the South. Next time, morons, bring shoes if you're gonna war.

Meh, I'm a child of the South, sort of. My ancestors are German and hit Louisiana after the Civil War and before Germany became a state. Only my brother had a collection of various Confederate Flags, because he was a history buff.

Wrong.  The Civil War was about freedom.  The North couldn't stand how much freedom the South had.  Freedom to enslave their fellow man.  Freedom to rebel from the government.  Freedom to commence informal executions.  The North got pissy about this, went to war, and lost so badly that they compromised on abolishing slavery, rather than pursuing the Compromise of 1865, which would have allowed States to choose whether they wanted to be a Free State or a Welfare State.  But you'll never read about any of this in any of your "history books".  Lol.  History is a joke these days.  You can pretty much make up whatever the hell you want and people will respond to you.

completely agree. it wasn't only about slavery but it wouldn't have been the same conflict without it

i love history but it's really disappointing the way human nature tends to whitewash it all one way or the other. But the winners write the stories i guess

Yep, not economical in an industrial age. And all things considered, factory workers were probably cheaper in the long run. You didn't have to buy them or keep them healthy.  (Not in anyway condoning slavery).
