I don't at all understand what that means...  For ME, it means that I can use my VA benefits to allow myself AND my husband to qualify for a home loan.

I can't speak to medical benefits but VA education benefits paid for my undergrad (Montgomery GI Bill) and my grad school (Post 9-11 GI Bill). The latter included a monthly stipend that was over $2K a month, straight into my pocket. In the end, 6 years of service earned me about $100K that paid for two degrees. And zero debt, student loan or otherwise.

Like a sore dick, you can't beat it.

This ruling allows gay spouses to access a lot more than just health care at a VA hospital - it's why the article said 'veteran's benefits'.
A short list:
transferring unused GI Bill benefits to their spouse
other educational benefits
life insurance
home loans
survivor's pension

Thanks!  It's funny that just a couple days ago my husband and I were gearing up to start looking for a house, and realized that he couldn't use my VA loan benefits and we thought we'd be putting it off for a few years.  I knew it would fall, I just didn't realize it would fall that fast!

SauronWasFramed: CLARIFICATION: The healthcare at the VA near me is rather sketchy. I would rather take my chances elsewhere than have to submit to a VA doctor

The biggest problem with the VA system now is the backlog of people trying to get into the system.  Sending a bunch of guys off to war tends to do that, but no one ever planned for it.

Now once your in, at least around here, it's a different story.  Dorn VA hospital in Columbia SC is great.  Back in the mid-90's it's wasn't the nicest looking place in the world, but damn - it's the shiat now.  Here's what happened the last time I took gramps down there:

I drive up to the front door to let him out (he's got trouble walking).  Turns out this isn't that uncommon, since they now offer valet parking for people without grandsons who can take the day off.
We walk up to the receptionists desk.  He hands her his ID card, she scans it and says "Welcome Mr. Karac.  You're appointment is in Dr. so-and-so's office on the third floor.  Just go right around this corner to the elevators.  When you get off at 3, it'll be down the hall to the left.
We get in the office, he hands the card to the nurse there.  "Good morning Mr. Karac.  If you'll just give us a minute we'll get you in to see the doctor."  We sit down, and five minutes later she calls us back.
He talks with the doc a bit and the doc decides he needs to draw some blood.  He picks up a phone and a nurse walks in less than a minute later to pull blood.  He then says he's gonna give gramps a prescription for some whatever and that he can pick it up at the pharmacy in the basement.
We go down to the basement, he hands his card to the nurse there.  She scans it, walks over to a counter, picks up a bag of pills, scans the barcode on it to make sure it matches, and hands him his meds.

Valet parking, a receptionist who can give you directions to any office in the building, a five minute wait in the waiting room, no wait for blood drawing, and prescriptions that can be called into the pharmacy and filled in the time it takes an elevator to get from the third floor to the basement?  And all of it run off of VA ID card - no mention of health insurance companies, copays, deductibles, or money whatsoever?  Go find me a non-VA hospital in the United States that'll do all that.

One of the most annoying problems I ever had with my unit was the absolutely piss-poor way we let guys getting out of service know about what benefits were available to them.  Units should have people from the VA come by and give presentations the same day they do the yearly STD / sexual harassment / don't do drugs / suicide prevention classes.  No one was ever told about what benefits they could ever use.

If you've (or any other vet) has never done it, you really, really, really, should take a few days off work, head down to the local VA office with every copy of every order, discharge papers, LES, and any other documentation you still have, and get a comprehensive list of everything you're eligible for.

My ex-boyfriend receives excellent medical care without ever seeing a bill.

When we were together, I worked at a hospital and he got faster and better care than I did. Since we've split up (amicably) he's bought a house and finished his BA, all on the VA's nickle.

The VA has a bad reputation because of past failures, but thanks to Jim Webb and Eric Shinseki, today's VA is a credit to the US.

From that chamber, and from that mansion, I fled aghast. The storm was still abroad in all its wrath as I found myself crossing the old causeway. Suddenly there shot along the path a wild light, and I turned to see whence a gleam so unusual could have issued ; for the vast house and its shadows were alone behind me. The radiance was that of the full, setting, and blood-red moon, which now shone vividly through that once barely-discernible fissure, of which I have before spoken as extending from the roof of the building, in a zigzag direction, to the base. While I gazed, this fissure rapidly widened - there came a fierce breath of the whirlwind - the entire orb of the satellite burst at once upon my sight - my brain reeled as I saw the mighty walls rushing asunder - there was a long tumultuous shouting sound like the voice of a thousand waters - and the deep and dank tarn at my feet closed sullenly and silently over the fragments of the "House of Bigotry."

There's an entire chapter in the book I posted earlier in the thread about VistA. To make a long story short, it's a great system that has convinced entire countries (Finland being the biggest example) to use it as their universal EMR. The only twist I would put on it is using a smart card to access it like France and Taiwan have done.

Republicans hate themselves more than anything else. A profound, near-suicidal self-loathing is the only possible reason for their incredibly (self) destructive behavior. As pitiful, disgusting, and loathsome as they are on the outside, imagine how much worse it must be to actually be one.

Karac: SauronWasFramed: CLARIFICATION: The healthcare at the VA near me is rather sketchy.

Valet parking, a receptionist who can give you directions to any office in the building, a five minute wait in the waiting room, no wait for blood drawing, and prescriptions that can be ...

They have an electronic system? And yet the VA has a warehouse so FULL of new vets' papers that the structural integrity of the building is falling apart?

That's for getting into the system. VistA is an electronic medical record that people have once they are accepted into the system. Also, from what I've read, that backlog is slowly getting eaten up.

I don't at all understand what that means...  For ME, it means that I can use my VA benefits to allow myself AND my husband to qualify for a home loan.

CLARIFICATION:  The healthcare at the VA near me is rather sketchy.  I would rather take my chances elsewhere than have to submit to a VA doctor.

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal.

Bless your heart.  Here's hoping you never have to rely on the VA for medical attention.

Awww sweetie, bless YOURS...  I already have (Florida, California, Massachusetts), a few times, and already had absolutely no problems other than a slightly longer wait than at a regular doctors office.

My father got great medical care from the VA in muskogee, OK and the one in OKC.   The doctors were great, the nurses were helpful and respectful and when his service related injuries from vietnam finally killed him earlier this year he was in a VA hospital getting excellent end of life care. I have no idea what we would have done without the VA.  And with my father's supplemental insurance from the post office his hundred and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of treatments cost my family $0 dollars, except for the insurance premium my father paid out of his civil service benefit package.

If you are a vet get your ass to your local VA with all your discharge paper work and anything else and find out what you qualify for because it's a great place to keep your family heatlhy, alive and not bankrupt.

How do benefits for family members of veterans work?  I hear two conflicting versions:

"My dad used to take my brother and I to the VA for all our doctor's appointments.  The family didn't have to pay anything."

"The VA says that getting my leg blown off by an IED was only 70% combat related, and I'm going to have to come up with the other 30% myself before I can get anything done about it."

Granted, these come from different generations of veterans separated by several decades.

The 1940s cohort looks more likely the outlier; either way, the deviation from the broader GSS-2012 trend seems more likely just a sampling effect (N1940-1949=135). The GSS-2010 graph has the lumpiness earlier.

Nothing destroys the institution of marriage more than people who don't enter into it without fully understanding their partner, a full desire and willingness to commit to the work and stress that goes into making a marriage, and an understanding that marriage is not about fun and guaranteed sexytime. Marriage is  work, and it's a partnership that has good days and bad days, days where you will loathe your partner, and days where you want to be around your partner all the time.

It's like any relationship, and if you marry your spouse because they make your dick hard or your pussy wet and you have no other shared interests or a genuine interest in being friends and wanting to be together, then you're doing it wrong.

No sir, the gender or color of your partner doesn't make marriages degrade, it's people doing it for the wrong reasons and who haven't got the goddamn balls to see it through when the fun stops and the work starts.  I would even go out on a limb to say that 90% of people who get married are doing it for the wrong reasons and need to reevaluate why they want to get married, and should definitely try spending a good couple of years living together and playing the part before you decide that you just have to tie the knot.

SauronWasFramed: withay: Vodka Zombie: withay: See Conservative Republican house of bigotry crumble.  Crumble, Republican house of bigotry, crumble.

You'd think, but they'll just find new groups to hate.

They always do, don't they...

SauronWasFramed: VA benefits?  Kinda like sending the cow to a slaughterhouse, ain't it?  I reckon if its the only thing you have, it beats nothing.....but not by much.

Same here.

You must be blessed. Congrats.
