Yea, MLK Jr was a commie as well as well as all those dirty anti-war protesters that didn't support the Vietnam War.

So this is the Government's latest excuse to bring down Wikileaks, then?

I am, admittedly, really susceptible to propaganda, so I have to consciously remember that and try not to believe anything based on one source, especially if it's a source I never heard of before, but what I will say is that it's interesting and a thought provoking enough idea to make me contemplate trying to read more about it, to see if what they say is true.

Unfortunately I'm going on holiday tomorrow so I can't be bothered. It shall slip down the cracks in my memories.

Maybe the Russians took Snowden in to give a giant diplomatic middle finger to the US, despite both parties swearing there's no longer any Cold War animosity.

This is why we must invade Vietnam today.  If we do not, there will be a domino effect of one nation after another falling under the evil influence of the Soviet Union.  The inevitable result will be that our own nation will one day stand alone against this menace.

I'm sorry. Syria, not Vietnam.  Russia, not Soviet Union.

I gotta reprint my talking points.  Sheesh, that sounded almost stupid.

FTBOTFA:

This story has been revised slightly to emphasize that our assertions are conjecture.

The main thesis of the story could be true.  Or perhaps not.  Much of the events could have happened as described without active assistance of the FSB, or could have been due to the Russians reacting to what would have been a gift on a silver platter.

The thing that makes me think they aren't behind it is that the deal apparently offered to Snowden is no more public release of documents in exchange for asylum.  That allows the Russians to read the rest of the documents he has (and you can bet they have copies now) without letting the US know that it has them.

That's an important thing, as if we were to know what they know, the US could take measures to minimize the usefulness of those documents.  At the very least, the US would know what the Russians know, and can plan future things accordingly.  It might even help from a deception point of view, if you feed information that confirms something they know, while doing something different.

On the other hand, if Russia keeps that information from becoming public, and thus preventing the US from knowing what Russia knows about those programs, they could exploit that.  The US wouldn't know what countermeasures to take.

So from a propaganda standpoint, it's a bit of a coup for the Russians, but they wouldn't want it to go too far, because then it could ruin, or at least stymie somewhat,  their actual intelligence operations.

Not really, many anti-semites take on Jewish names and pretend to have Jewish ancestry, for essentially the same reason North Korea calls itself the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea.

/come to think of it, almost none of the countries that turned to socialism ever used the word "socialist" in their names

Almost nothing gets published that would make a far left leaning country look bad, regardless of how many rights and lives are getting trampled by the government. If wikileaks were any more biased they'd be donning Che Guevara shirts, marching in May day protests and putting up a statue of Stalin in their lobby. Read the Sword and the Shield, using groups like wikileaks is exactly the kind of thing the Soviets did for decades.

Wow. I guess I shouldn't be surprised with all the White Knighting here.

Lets turn the tables around. If Snowdenski took files from Russia and came to the USA, would he be a CIA operative? A True Patriot of the Russian People exposing the government? Or would he have committed suicide with two bullets to the back of his head?

That's probably because it's fascist countries like the US, who actually trample on their citizens rights.

You just have to stop being so naive and open your eyes and realise the propaganda, your corporate overlords are feeding you, are meant to distract you, while they rob you blind and they keep all the power.

Nnnnooo, I'm pretty sure countries like Russia also trample on their citizens rights. Or Venezuela. (http://www.hrw.org/news/2013/03/05/venezuela-chavez-s-authoritarian- le gacy  )

Because China and Russia are the bastions of freedom any of us would have willingly fled to in the same situation.

Whatever is intentions originally were, he a pawn now. China and Russia are the only countries that will stand up to the US. Either he went there knowing that or he was made to go. Either way, if he had an iota of good intentions in the beginning, he's a pawn now. He knows it and I'm sure he is not enjoying it.

Oh come on.

You just have to look at have look at how the randroids in the congress and senate love fellating anyone with money, no matter how many lives they have destroyed to get them, to see who really rules the US.

And then ask yourself who control the medias. If you think your tv-network or newspaper are telling you what is really going on, then you have truly drunk the coolaid.

An economic system that doesn't require any political system to enforce it.

/merging money with politics is just as bad as merging religion with politics
//pretending it was always that way is what enables it

So, presumably, you would claim that Russia and China are free countries in which no one fellates people with money, no one controls the media and where citizens are free to openly criticize their government, love whoever they love, and in which journalists and dissenters are never jailed, "disappeared", or simply assassinated.

Remarkable claim.

Have you tried repeating this claim to people learning to fly ? it is exactly the sort of thing someone learning to fly can use to distract them enough that they will miss the ground when hurling themselves at it...

Have they ever given us a reason not to be concerned about them?

Maybe they aren't nominally communist anymore, and sure, we cooperate on space programs*, but that doesn't mean we're all buddy-buddy close friends.

*This is largely a function of us needing launch continuity to support the ISS, and the Russians needing cash.

... Wait are they randroids are big government spenders?

Those two things are KIND OF diametrically opposed.

And, uh. You realize there are media companies that aren't based in the US, right? And that Human Right's watch isn't a media orginization, and I'm pretty sure has *also* repeatedly called out the US, right?

But apparently not a douche?   Not that I don't agree with you onyxruby, but hey, acting all educated at the front and then turning it into a simple insult at the end without corroborating your implications shows a lack of book LEARNING as opposed to reading propaganda just like your prey did.

Truth is the US is a fascist country.  The government shows up with a warrant, takes all your stuff and walks away.   The bank shows up with a "warrant", takes all your stuff and walks away.  How's that different from the old Nottingham stories where the Sheriff posted a bit of TP on the door and took everything for any perceived crime?  It isn't.   We've already allowed corporations to be defined as single legal entities in representation of their workers, which is feudalism cold and true.  What's to stop the local or national dictator's "fark n forget" policy as to material rights?  Nothing.  Fascism.
