That means the French aren't coming either... and the community organizer stands alone, guarding his red lines.

Canada is also refusing to use military force (though they support using force...just not theirs). So...this seems oddly familiar. Are we going to send Kerry to the UN soon?

I'd love to see Germany take the lead on this... wouldn't that just be a slap in the face

So now it's left to the Nobel Peace Prize winner to be the sole warmonger.  Thanks Fartbomb

Look, when we had our Civil War, we pulled ourselvesup by our bootstraps and slaughtered each other.  We just need to let those kids learn on their own, just like we did.

This is generally how the US ends up trying to be the world's policeman.  A bunch of countries would like action taken, you know, just not by them.  NWMT (Not with my troops)

Frankly I'm waiting for this to spin even more out of control so the US can be blamed for not taking action.  Because that's what happens when you attempt to intervene everywhere in the world, eventually you're given the options of intervening or not and you're responsible for all bad outcomes and none of the good ones.

Huzzah.

Plans are in disarray? Don't we have guys that spend every day making contingency plans for just such an occasion? It's not there were a lot of options on the table. Either they would strike or they wouldn't.

Kind of hard to claim to be enforcing international norms if no one internationally agrees with you.

Well it's not fun for the press if the President hears the news, closes the folder in front of him, slides it to the left, and then opens the next folder and says "As I was saying."

The thing about international affairs is that you have to actually respect the views of others.

China and Russia are two major important nations in our world.

We should not tempt fate lest we wake up in WWIII

Happens sometimes. Sometimes deservedly. What % of US politicos could survive the experience?

I support bombing the hell out of Syria.

I also support having a debate like this in Congress before we take action. If Congress votes no, we shouldn't go.

I am just happy that it the resistance is so stiff (the idea of military action in Syria) that I doubt there will be any sort of military action in Syria

Why would anyone go for a losing bet? That's precisely what happened with Libya.

651 Members of Parliament. Approx 100,000 constituents per representative. Complete election process completed in 4-6 weeks. Remember that post mid terms when the run up to 2016 starts in earnest.

If he doesn't do what we decided Red Line means, he sucks. And since we can make that whatever we want, he automatically sucks. And is failing to do what we expect him to do. Even though he hasn't said anything specific yet.

I assumed since you'd jumped on the "Obama wants war" bandwagon that the rightwing has been pushing all day.

This is pretty straightforward. Our goal is not to help the rebels win. It is not to establish a genuine democracy in Syria or protect Israel. Our goal is to punish the Syrian government for committing a terrible war crime. Our targets should be limited and symbolic. Is the presidential residence still standing in Damascus? Level it. Did Assad come from a particular town or region where a lot of his relatives still live? Carpet bomb it. Is there some monument or structure particularly cherished by the Ba'athist Party? Destroy it. Our goal is to teach him a lesson and then get out.

We don't want to turn the tide for the rebels. The rebels are waiting for their chance to impose a religious dictatorship on the Syrian people. We want this war to go on as long as possible, with neither side gaining an upper hand. Ideally the last Syrian apparatchik and the last rebel should simultaneously stab each other in the ruins. This is an entirely internal affair for the Syrian people. They brought it on themselves. Let them pay the price. We have no reason to intervene and no responsibility for their actions.
